Waad SAL, the property unit of Lebanese political party Hezbollah, will finish rebuilding southern Beirut destroyed by a 33-day war with Israel in 2006 within a year, said Waad’s general manager.
“We will complete the rebuilding of the remaining 180 buildings by mid 2010 even if the government does not fund the project with the remaining money that it pledged to offer,” said Hasan Jishi in an interview today in Beirut.
The Lebanese government pledged $180 million of the total $400 million construction project, Jishi said. “The government gave until now $80 million and there is a delay in getting the rest but this will not deter us,” he said.
The project is being funded by donations from overseas countries and building materials are given by Arab and Islamic companies, Jishi said. The Jihad Binaa Institution, the Beirut-based social and economic development arm of Hezbollah, will make up any shortfall, he said.
“If these two sources are not enough to complete the project, then Jihad Binaa Institution will fund the rest,” Jishi said.
During the war about 242 buildings were destroyed and some 1,300 buildings damaged, Jishi said.
“We have delivered 45 buildings to their owners and at the end of August we will deliver another 35 buildings,” he said. “We have also completed the rehabilitation of all damaged buildings.”
Hezbollah, meaning party of God, and its allies will form part of Lebanon’s new government. Saad Hariri, the leader of Lebanon’s pro-Western coalition, is currently holding talks with all political factions on forming a national unity government since he was designated prime minister on June 27.

    i don’t see where you’re going with that…

This is propaganda aimed at extolling the virtues of hizb as a charitable and efficient institution that takes care of its own when their own goevrnment can’t be relied on to do the same. Just old politics….but one has to wonder, what’s the use of rebuilding when hizb is constantly planning wars and defending its weapons wich endangers the population and the country and puts it at risk of more israeli aggression?

They can’t blame HA for their political affiliation anymore so they have 2 create a diversion.. now Jihad bina2 are bad for helping out !! What a wonderful country world we’re living in..

Anyway, this is nothing new to us.. Bash HA day and night 3diyeh, it gets the spotlight out of the real problem : M14 …

  • 4. Jean | July 20th, 2009 at 6:17 am

Should we be thanking them for fixing the damage that their own adventures caused? Wake up to yourself ya Doc, those buildings would be still standing today if the mighty HA quit being a bunch of thugs.

To use an analogy that you may understand ya Doc, its like you breaking somebodys leg – fixing it – and then expecting everyone to be happy and praise you for the job you have done.

Jean, 2adrab men heyk is no one ask where Jihad Bina2 get 320 million $ to rebuild the South without the government’s help, no one see a problem with receiving money from foreign governments directly to a Lebanese association without going through the Lebanese government? What will Ahmadinajad ask for in exchange for all these donations, only that we pray for him?

    Jean

    Welcome,

For anyone to say that HA(Hezballah) are the terrorists and are responsible for the 06 war are either blind, brainwashed or simply radicals. It would be similar to blaming the LF(Lebanese forces ouwet) for all the destruction and death that took place in zahle when.. (zahle battle 1981 or 82 i think). Agree? To use an analogy that you may understand ya Jean !! ;)

One of the worst acts of terrorism committed by Israel was the 06 war on Lebanon and its people, and here you are now calling it ” their adventure”.. You sound like those wahabis who called HA mughamirin when the war was on the going !! You blame HA for the war when the Israelis themselves admit that the war was planned years and years ago. here from now lebanon :

Israeli Brigadier General Dan Halutz, IDF Chief of Staff during the 2006 July War, told a conference marking the war’s third anniversary on Sunday at Tel Aviv University’s Center for Strategic Research that Israel had planned for war against Lebanon long before Hezbollah abducted two IDF soldiers, Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev.

He stated that the war’s principal aim had been the total elimination of Hezbollah.

He said former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Defense Minister Amir Peretz had erred when they refused his proposal to attack the Lebanese cabinet and infrastructure during the war, which he said paved the way for Hezbollah to strengthen its military capabilities.

Halutz also said that Israel’s major achievements are that Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah considers himself under surveillance and does not dare to be seen in public; Hezbollah lost the 2009 parliamentary elections; and Syria is making overtures to improve relations with the West.

Lastly, try your false logic somewhere else. Like it or not HA has the right to exist (since the gov is helpless), it has the right to defend its citizens in the south and it also has the right to build and rebuild what was destroyed during the war. No one can stop us from helping our own people..

Thank you and welcome to reality ….

    Doc1559,

    Thanks for the welcome =)

I just wanted to spend a few minutes replying to your comment. Firstly, I want to make it abundantly clear that I am not an Israeli sympathiser and nor am I a HA sympathiser. Im a Lebanese Maronite (not a wahhabi as you implied) from Northern Lebanon. Im 150% nationalist and refuse to accept that any piece of our 10452km2 be occupied by any foreigner, be it Israeli, Syrian, Palestinian, Iranian, American, French or whoever.

The analogy that you gave regarding the battle of Zahle is one who’s context cannot be ignored. The early 80’s was when the war was in full swing and we had a very large occupying force killing us on all fronts. We did not lob missiles into Syria, nor did we cross the border to kidnap their soldiers. It also was not by any coincedence that Syria happened to attack THE largest Christian city in the East. Come to think of it, I dont remember seeing any of your shia brothers from the beqaa around to give us a hand. That really intrigues me because they have always claimed to be resistance, just a selective one.

Some of the most influential people in HA circles are known to have worked alongside and trained with Yasser Arafat and the PLO. The best example of that would be Imad Mugniyah and his involvment with Fatah and Arafat’s special security outfit, Force 17. We are meant to believe in HA and their resistance claim, when one of their most inspirational commanders helped the Palestinians against your Lebanese brothers in the late 70’s and early 80’s. It wasnt until the PLO were belted in 82, that Mugniyah joined the Hezb.

What I am trying to get at Doc is that, for alot of us Lebanese that have been burnt severely from the war – we find it very hard to trust a group\sect\leader that claims resistance on one angle and is the not so subtle aggressor on the other.

    Lebanon for the Lebanese
    Peace

  • 13. avi | July 21st, 2009 at 2:51 pm

But Jean i feel in your words that you are for peace….and the way you see lebanon is the way i see israel…..shalom salaam peace!

  • 14. avi | July 21st, 2009 at 2:58 pm

And the problem with saying these simple words Jean are that people who think and wish peace are seen as traitors for people like Doc or Reader….And also I have no problem to formulate an auto critic on Israel but count on me to counter any false claims built on lies!

  • 15. avi | July 21st, 2009 at 3:00 pm

And no Jean is not israeli he is not a traitor he is just for common sense not war and hate and destroying, but for compromise, building and peace!

  • 16. Jean | July 22nd, 2009 at 1:46 am

    Avi,

The sad truth about us Lebanese is that we ALL have a “if your not with us, your against us” mentality. If my thoughts and opinions dont coincide with that of an Aouni or a HA supporter, I am a traitor. Its the same vice versa.

That is not to say that I do not agree with a couple of the principals that HA stand for. For example ya Avi, when was the last time you saw a Lebanese warplane over Israeli territory? How many times did our warplanes break the sound barrier to intimidate you? You cannot sit their and tell me that it was because of HA training camps and whatever. I live on the outskirts of Tripoli and planes were right above us.

Yes, we Lebanese want to live in peace and prosperity. We cannot do that until every country that has her finger in Lebanon removes it. Unfortunately for Lebanon, the future of progression, peace and stability died on the 14th of September, 1982, along with Sheikh Bachir Gemayel … allah yerhamo ….

    Jean

You’re very welcome , this is your blog at the end of the day ;) and I am only a guest here..

You say : I just wanted to spend a few minutes replying to your comment. Firstly, I want to make it abundantly clear that I am not an Israeli sympathiser

answer : With all due respect , I thought you were one of these Israeli lovers who come here and spew venom on us. 7a2ak 3laye. Now the picture is clear..

One last thing , I do not get your point regarding Imad mughniyeh, I thought we have closed the civil war door once and for all, and a sweeping amnesty took place after the violence ended.. this way, I don’t have to blame Geagea for what he did to other Lebanese during the civil wat and you don’t have to blame Imad mughniyeh for his political affiliation back in the late 70’s when shiaa as a sec had no power and were spread and divided between yamin and yassar a7zeb. If crimes were committed by Imad mighniyeh ( I know it didn’t), it would have been fully investigated and published by M14 and you know that !!

PLO fighter who killed Lebanese is clearly not a legally valid term to describe Imad Mughniyeh or any other HA fighter. PLO # 1 enemy were shi3iit Lebnen and Mousa al sader teaching school. My uncle was kidnaped and tortured to death by those PLO just for being a shi3i who had the guts to tell them no when no one dared to say no. I find it ironic to accuse Imad mughniyeh while Ignoring others. That’s not fair …

    Peace ya ret..
    Thank you …
