How do you see Aoun’s visit to Syria?
Posted by RodgeMichel Aoun is expected to visit Syria very soon, in what is described by some (me included) as a return to the source, where his political career actually began.
It is clear that Aoun is not visiting Syria as a “Liberation Hero”, neither as a leader earning a consensus among his people (Christians or other communities), and of course not as a President of the Republic (his fading dream), not even as a minister or any official status.
He’s visiting Syria as a “Party leader”, who is much closer now to Syria than any other prominent politician in Lebanon, and his current statements prove that.
So regardless if we are with Aoun or against him, and without trying to negotiate his politics, principles, acts or beliefs, I really want us to debate about the purpose of his visit and if it would have any positive impact on Lebanon, or just to improve his own situation.
He describes his visit as historic, similar to Gen. De Gaulle’s (or De Gall as per our dear friend Lebanonjon) visit to Germany after WW2, and he’s trying to convince people that he will “shil el zir min el bir”.
Frankly I don’t see any real purpose or importance to this visit, except to fulfill his own personal interests, but in return, and maybe in order to strengthen his position before the coming elections, the Syrians would offer him something (could it be freeing few prisoners??) to portray him as the hero and the man who as always “brings back the Christians rights”!!!!! (What a joke).
I personally have doubts, and I don’t think the Syrians will do this, but of course they will do other things to support his image among Christians in particular, in order to gain back his continuous support for their politics in Lebanon.
Whatever happens, this visit has no importance at all, it will be more publicity than a visit, and it will not have any good outcomes, in fact it could bring us bad consequences, since when he made his first visit I the 80s, he received a promise to become President, and launched war after war as a result, so I’m afraid this time they will provide him with another promise that could have more disastrous results.

1st of all De Gaulle paid a state viisit to Germany after she has apologized for the atrocities she made. Can’t remember Syria apologizing for anything.
If Aoun wants to be like the Gaulles so i’d suggest that he retires from politics n starts writting his memoirs…
During his visit, Aoun is planning to innaugurate a church built by Assad (again he’s playing the role of the Christians representative) and of course he’ll be visiting some areas occupied by Christians.
Just like u Rodge I do think that Syria would give him a present in return but freeing the prisonners (which i deeply hope i’m mistaken) would be not possible. I’ll guess he’ll be back wz some dozens of Barazi

“Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first. -Ronald Reagan”
I had to re-post it!!!
4. Ali | November 24th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
i believe that his visit will be a great success!
and the syrians will free some of the prisoners!
Michele,
this may be Reagan’s or ur “Politics ” but not necessary ours!
5. Rodge | November 24th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
Ali,
Ok let’s say it will be successful, but how can you convince me, I mean what should happen to condier it as successful.
As for the prisoners, Maybe u’re right, but let me remind you that the Syrians have set free many prisoners as an offer to Emile Lahoud at that time, but they kept hundreds, so if they will free few just for a certain purpose (we all know what it is) this cannot be considered as success.
Other than this issue, what could be successful??

Its clear ya Alloush that u don’t know much abt Aoun; I happen to know at least 2 personally who used n still give him his pocket money n of course he promised them certain favors in return. Aoun did prostitute lots of his principles n values made deals wz the devil just for money n of course power.
7. Michele | November 24th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
I n all of us hope that something good will come up from that senile n Syria will actually regardless her intentions will free our prisonners; but as Rodge said that they’ll only free few of them.
btw I’m happy that Aoun again changed his mind about when he not long time ago said that he had no longer prisonners in Syria. That could tell u enough abt that man.
8. Ali | November 24th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
this visit is not supposed to change the universe!!
to me, the invitation in itself can be considered a success to the general!
the syrians by inviting the general are telling him that they are Sorry for what they did on teshreen 13! this will have a great impact on the FPM supporters!
second, i dont think that the syrians will release only few prisoners ..if they decided to release any they should release all of them!
3rd, this will be the begining of a new relation between the Aounists and the syrians , a relation that is based on Respect!!
i am not complimenting Aoun, but the gut has a strategic insight! he is aware of the changes that this region will witness after some months!
if Aoun was able to reach an agreement with the syrians concerning the status of the relation that should be between Syria and lebanon and more precise the christians , i think this will be a great job!
9. Ali | November 24th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
Michele,
well,it’s not that i kno the general in person but i am sure that he is a person of principles and honor!
see, even when General Aoun was Part of the “Arez Revolution”, i used to respect him!if i had the chance to vote back then i would have voted for him and not for Waleed Jumblat even though he was calling for disarming hizbullah1!i knew that he wanted the good for lebanon but was wrong abt judging hizbullah! this misjudgement is related to his ignorance abt the reality of hizbullah! thats why when he got to kno hizbullah and why he is keeping the weapons he made that agreement with him!
My point is that, general Aoun is one of few who cant be bought by money!! His attitude during july war is the best proof! back then, everyone stood against the resistance and the were accused by fighting for syrian and iranian benefit!! without caring abt his political future ,he stood next to the Lebanese resistance at the BEGINING of the fights when noone every predicted that the resistance will be victoious!!!
He was never part of the corruption and he stood against the syrians when he thought that they will have control over lebanon!
Mind u that generalaoun didnt deny the presence of Lebanese prisoners!!! i heard his speech!!he said that there is no FPM prisoners!! there is a big difference between FRM and LEBANESE!!
10. Michele | November 25th, 2008 at 7:33 am
Ali, FPM, believe it or not are Lebanese.
Again Syria won’t free all the prisonners because for so many years Syria insisted that she didn’t have any or just few; so of course she doesn’t want to look bad n prove that she was lying all the time to the public opinion n the united nations.
Syria doesn’r owe an apology to Aoun but owe it to all the Lebanse for all the massacres, humiliations she made them go through.
How would u feel if Nasrallah today realises that Israel is here to stay n as u said above ” he is aware of the changes that this region will witness after some months” n decides to create a good relation n pays a visit to Israel; how would you n all the Lebanese who lost their loved ones, feel?
But u know what, Nasrallah won’t do it; regardless what I think of that guy but i know he never changes principles.
Ali sweetie, trust me, Aoun can be bought with a nice tie or a 52 inch LCD.
11. Michele | November 25th, 2008 at 7:36 am
By the way, if Aoun really believes that he represents the christians in the region n goes on these visits to make sure that they are well treated, why won’t he go to Iraq n Egypt n do something about the christians conditions over there?
Hmmmm, maybe they won’t be any cash reward from these visits!!!!
12. nevermind | November 25th, 2008 at 9:26 am
Well….. I think we all hope and want that all our poor prisoners will come back home. If this is a filthy political play, let it be, at least the mothers of the prisonners will benefit.
Rodge,
Aoun is loosing his christian voters, he wanted to rely on the pro-syrian ones, so the syrian government told him, if u want our support, u should come to syria!!!!
remember, when Hakim was in prison, the syrian govnmt persuaded our Patriarche to visit syria ,and the price of it Hakim free…
Syrians are desperate to make good ties with Lebaneses christians, because they know if we win those, we got the last resistant anti-syrian movment.
And as you can see…. Aoun is fullfilling their dream.
I hope he rot in hell….
13. Ali | November 25th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
MIchele,
i kno that FPM are Lebanese But Keep in mind that not all Lebanese are FPM!!!when he said that there are no FPM prisoners that doesnt mean he denies the presence of Lebanese Detainees! in Mathmatics we say “FPM” subset “Lebanese”!
2nd u said that”Again Syria won’t free all the prisonners because for so many years Syria insisted that she didn’t have any or just few; ”
Noone knows the real number of detainees!! back then there was a civil war and there is a great possibility that many of the so-called” prisoners” were killed and burried by the lebanese militias!! that is something we should take into consideration!
the syrian regime doesnt care abt the public opinion!!! Bashar is a DEctator lol!!
u said “Syria doesn’r owe an apology to Aoun but owe it to all the Lebanse for all the massacres, humiliations she made them go through.”
No she doesnt!! this sounds like “POetry”lol!! the facts are different1!!
Syria did humiliate many lebanese but let us not forget that Most of the Lebanese Approved on her actions and were the Syrian’s most loyal dogs!!
even if this is out of topic, but i guess the lebanese desreve an Apology from Samir GeaGea , waleed Jumblat, Hariri, Berri, and many others who were not only part but also blessed the syrians barbarian actions!! Now u would tell me that this is not true and that thanks to many of these the syrians are out!!! and that would make me really laugh!!inno in 2005 they(samir geagea is excluded) woke up and remembered the syrian behavior!!!!
when i mentioned Aoun, i mentioned him cause he was the only one to stand against them unlike many othere who stabbed them in their back! there are always that kind of enemy who deserve ur respct and to the syrians Aoun was that enemy thats why they owe him an apology in particular!
the example u gave abt Sayyed Nasrallah and Israel is not relevant!!
Aoun is visiting syria after they got out of lebanon and agreed on the diplomatic exchange!!
moreover, he is not going there just cause of the changes that this reason will witness . if Aoun was that kind of ppl, he would have fought the syrians in the 1989-1990!! taking these changes into consideration, he wanna shape the relations between syria and lebanon and more precise the christians , relations that will never contradict with the indepenece of lebanon!! and this shows that he is a wise man!
Aoun ,for ur info, didnt change his principles cause he always said that when syria is out we will have problems with her no more!!
U need courage to fight the enemy, but u surely need more courage to make peace with ur enemy when he is out! Lebanon can never survive without having good relations with syria and tahts what 14feb has declared too!! thats why Saniora visited syria, sleiman visited syria, Barood visited syria and Metri also visited syria!
Aoun’s visit serves lebanon’s interest just like the other visits!!!
u said,”why won’t he go to Iraq n Egypt n do something about the christians conditions over there?”
why dont they send him an invitation frst!!
“maybe they won’t be any cash reward from these visits!!!!”
hehe excuse me but this is silly!!
Jumblat used to get money while he was sitting in Klimonso!! he didnt have to go to iran the same way he doesnt need to go to saudi arabia these days!!
if Aoun can be bought, he could be bought by the saudis or the americans or is it that he prefer the Toman to Dollars:D!!!!
i dont kno the general, but by following his political behavior over the 5 years , i consider him a man of honor who wanna build a state and not a ranch!!!
14. Michele | November 26th, 2008 at 7:17 am
Ali u said : “i know that FPM are Lebanese But Keep in mind that not all Lebanese are FPM!!!” n i say thank God that we still have educated, smart, independant, patriotic Lebanese.
Alloush, he never said that he doesn’t have FPM people there he said he doesn’t have any of his men there n by his men i surely hope he was talking about the soldiers who kept on fighting on that october when he run away.
Plus if i need to follow ur logic, so Aoun only gives a sh*t abt his own people n doesn’t care abt the rest of the Lebanese?
Then thank u, u confirmed to Doc that he’s not a leader to all the Lebanese.
Syria does owe an apology to the Lebanese n when i say Lebanese i mean u, me our families n all the people who suffered from them.
Trust me i really don’t give a sh*t abt the politicians n I mean all of them but if u really wanna talk abt apology well Geagea did apologize n i personally accepted it ( i got once slapped by a LF on a check-point yeah yeah i can see u smiling)
No sweetie the exemple i gave abt Nasrallah n Israel is the same but i see u have no guts to give an opinion on it.
Ali, get down from ur cloud n see the facts as they are, Aoun is no man of honor a man of honor does not run away n leave his family behind, a man of honor does not betray his country n his principles, a man of honor has no price.
15. Ali | November 26th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Michele,
“he said he doesn’t have any of his men ” that proves my point so next time listen carefully to what the guy says!
“Aoun only gives a sh*t abt his own people n doesn’t care abt the rest of the Lebanese?
” u cant deduce that!! u sounds like:
PPl eat banana1
Monkeys eat banana!
so ppl are monkeys!!
when he denies the presence of any of his men in the Jail doesnt mean that he only cares abt them!! he is just saying facts and describing the situation!!
moreover, he always called for the release of all the detainees and insisted on mentioning it in the Bayan el wizari!
it was also mention in the agreement between Hizbullah and tayyar!!besides, it is the govenment resposibility isn’t it!! do u think by cursing syria, she would free the detainees?!!
the Ex govenemet was not able to solve any problem due to their misbehavior!!
anyway, lets wait and see what will happen during his visit to Syria!
i confirmed nothing .it is u who made wrong assumptions!!
do u call that an apology?!! For god sake!!!
if u do think so , then i believe Bashar el Assad also apologized when he said that they have done many mistakes in Lebanon!! this is similar to” 2athna2 qeyamena be wajebena el watani!!!”
No dear, i can assure u that i have the guts:). Aoun didnt visit syria till they get out of lebanon , made diplomatic relations with lebanon, and accepted to solve the detainees problem!! Sleiman visited syria, Sanira visited syria, barood also visited syria!! Lebanon’s problems with syria are over. some have been solved and the others are on the track!and taking the regional changes into consideration, general’s visit to syria is considered a smart move!! that was my point!!
As for sayyed Nasrallah, if he makes a deal with the israelis he would be a traitor and deserve the penalty of death!! As long as israel exist, there will be always an agression! thats why the example u gave is not relevant!!
“a man of honor does not run away n leave his family behind, a man of honor does not betray his country n his principles, a man of honor has no price.”
thats why Aoun is a Man of Honor!!
i have noticed that u always mention the run away thing!!!
miss, Aoun wasnt a soldier!! he was the General!! he doesnt carry a rifle. his job is to set plans!! when any army is defeated, the general sit aside and accept his defeat!! you dont expect him to take his gun and start shooting!!! LOL
16. Michele | November 26th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Aaaaakh ya Ali shoo baddak fat!!!!!
The general doesn’t save his skin 1st then tries to inform his men to surrender.
Ali the guy did run away n leave his family behind. Ask doc n Ja3far.
Plus he once said that he’ll fight till the last minute even if he had to use a kitchen knife. So much for a man of honor hein?
As for z apology, well obviously u r determined not to understand, so no need to bother.
Israel withdrew from Lebanon as much as Syria withdrew from Lebanon we fehmak kfeyé!
In case u don’t know Aoun has still his OWN men in jail.
17. Ali | November 26th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
it is not true!!
he told his men to surrender but there were a grp of soldiers who wasnt able to communicate with them1!! i foget the region that they were defending !! they all were killed however!
for sure he would say that!! it was during the fights!! baddo yerfa3 men ma3naweyyat jnodo! its a metaphore by the way!! did u really think that he would fight with a kitchen knife?!!!
israel didnt withdraw w fehmek kfaye!!
How can u kno that?!! do u have the names?!!
noone knows the number or the name of the lebanese detainees miss!! all what u read abt lists are just assumptions!!! no one has a solid proof!!!
lets wait and see !!!!
18. Michele | November 26th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Neither did Syria n i’m sure that deep down inside u know that!!!!!
He told his men to surrender once he secured himself in the French embassy; that’s extremely heroic.
Ya Ali ya habibi when u tell MEN n not kids that u will be the last to fight even with a kitchen knife, i don’t expect u that u will be the 1st to run away.
Ya khayyé at least fight a bit then surrender.
U know id Aoun died on that day, he would have been still respected n loved by many Lebanese, me among them.
I was a true believer n him n God knows how disappointed i was on that day.
So u didn’t say anything abt z part leaving his family behind? Didn’t think so
As for his men still there, well guess what a friend of mine is still hoping for z return of her father who was a soldier fighting on October the 13th under Aoun’s command.
19. Ali | November 26th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
there are no syrian troops on the lebanese land!! i am sure abt that!
thats not true!! it was part of the negotiation to secure the lebanese army soldiers who were fighting by his side!! it was a condition to accept surrendering!
“So u didn’t say anything abt z part leaving his family behind? Didn’t think so ” haha mnee7a!!
the same goes for them!! they were secured!
well, i hope he is !! but she has to keep in mind that he might be killed by the syrians or any other lebanese militia!!
ba3dain, u criticize aouns run away and u say nother abt geagea supporting the syrians and bombarding easter beirut!! thats weird!
20. Michele | November 26th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
As u might have guessed earlier, u being a smart cookie, i was not a big fan of Geagea nor of the LF on that time hence the slap on my face in z past.
But wether u want to admit it or not, z guy unlike all the rest (jumblatt, berri, nasrallah, Aoun, politicians who have blood on their hands), served his time in jail when the rest are considered heros.
I’m not sure why he never run away n left the country like Aoun did but instead went into prison.
What matters for me the most, is for Lebanon to have its total sovereignity n starts prospering.
If today Aoun comes n declares that he is fully dedicated to Lebanon n drops his foreign alliances n his personal interests n fights for a free Lebanon, then i’ll forgive him n support him.
21. Michele | November 26th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Oh and no syrian troops in Lebanon, but their mukhabarati and “Thank u Souria” militia are still there.
