LBCI, one of Lebanon’s leading television stations, in an unexpected move has announced its independence from the Lebanese Forces, the Christian party it has been associated with since it was founded in 1985.
As Safir newspaper reported Thursday that Pierre Daher, executive director of the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation International, in a major restructuring drive declared the station’s break away from the LF and its leader Samir Geagea.
Daher reportedly called his employees for an urgent meeting during which he said that he is not ready to sacrifice the station ‘that we built with our sweat, blood and tears… to turn it into an LF station, which would no longer be for all the Lebanese and the Arabs.”
As Safir said Daher emphasized that the move was part of a plan to protect the station and ensure its continuity and professional standing.
Daher also carried out administrative changes, the paper said without giving further details.
LBCI, the first private television station in Lebanon, was founded ten years after the 1975 outbreak of the Civil War and was heavily associated with the LF.
As a result of its political affiliation, the station was often targeted by the artillery shells of factions rivaling the right-wing Christian party. Its journalists have also been subjected to violence.
The most recent attack against the station was the Sept. car bomb explosion against its leading anchorwoman May Chidiac who lost her left leg and arm in the blast.
Chidiac, who was well known as an LF sympathizer, was also a staunch critic of Syria. The attack against her was one of a string of bombings aimed at anti-Syrian figures including the Feb. 2005 blast that killed former premier Rafik Hariri.
Since its onset, LBCI rose to become one of the highest rated stations in Lebanon. It went global in 1996 when it launched the LBC Satellite channel, al Fadaiya al Lubnaniya, that broadcasts to audiences in the Arab world. It now has several channels covering Europe, North America and Australia.
The station’s regional and international outreach happened when Geagea was serving an 11-year jail sentence for crimes committed during the war.
After his release in 2005, LBCI went back to covering the LF chief prominently by assigning a journalist to stay with him at his Cedars mountain resort in north Lebanon where he chose to live out of security concerns.

I can not believe this. The only major christian channel is not a real christian channel anymore. Why can not all christians be united? I do not get it!

You cannot change the color of your skin!
whether u are here or there, they will know; u are lebanese.
and the world will not help you. But the one who live down the street or few blocks away is ur best friend. and ur best choice!
i lived 16 years and i moved to montreal, and, after all this time, i read today on september 03 2008 13 coments and i still see man angry not willing to find peace nor forgiveness!
no matter what religion you have, the way to god has always been by forgiving and loving one another!
if it is power and money u want take it.. order a tree it will not move, order a rock it will not respond!
only if i could make u understand, folow no man, but the way to god if u believe or the way to a peacful and joyful moment if u do not!
sometimes u must not just turn the page, but u have to rip it off!
after all… i love lebanon from north to south, and i love it so much that every man that whiches the best for it is my brother and every man who live their is more than welcome.
true i left, but i left because the people have a lot to meet in their eyes. tho, i really think they are the best people i have ever known!
simply, peace to everyone!
and to all my friend!
chta2nelkoun!
