A typical conversation with an Aounist …
These days, who hasn’t been involved in a conversation with one of the supporters of Michel Aoun? Especially in light of what has happened yesterday in the country, I am sure that many of the esteemed readers will find that the lines to follow have a very familiar ring…so excuse me if you get a feeling of déjà vu, but I could not resist posting about it because, quite frankly, I am appalled by the obvious lack of historical knowledge and analytical spirit that all the Aoun followers seem to enjoy these days.
The conversation starts in a sitting room with the TV on… I will refer to the aounist as A and to myself as O:
O: Pretty tough those riots…its going to be bad for the country…plus I hope this does not escalate into something out of control…
A: Its all the LF fault…why did they take the streets against the FPM??? All we were doing was protesting peacefully…Why did you have to intervene…its your fault
O: Woooow relax man…you want to go on strike and close your shops, that’s fine, but I don’t…why are you stopping me? I mean I want to go to work, and you are blocking my road…who is messing with who? Who is infringing on who’s rights???
A: The General warned you to stay home…we want to show the government that we re the majority of the people and we can control the country anytime we want…
O: Sorry pal…the General may benefit from me staying home, but the benefit would be much much much bigger if I had stayed home out of PERSUATION and in AGREEMENT with his points and NOT out of fear, nor because the road to my workplace was cut…
A: we were protesting democratically…you messed things up
O: Sorry pal, but you guys started burning tires and closing major roads as early as 4:00 am…I intervened as a reaction to you forcing me to stay home…
A: (stuck and changing the course of the discussion) We have had enough of this government…it has to go down.
O: Woow, calm down. Who do you want to replace it with? I mean you have to have an alternative in mind don’t you?
A: Alternative?? (thinks for a moment) they are all thieves and crooks..they have stolen our money for years…the government has to go down…we the people demand it…
O: OK but what about the alternative? Who are you proposing? Salim Hoss? Omar Karami? I mean those are currently your allies, are they not?
A: Obviously stuck, changes the subject…You want to tell me that Hariri has not stolen the country and has not caused our debt to skyrocket to 40 billion dollars?
O: Well…if you want to go there, lets see:
· The Ministry of Power (electricity) has on its own incurred a 12 billion dollars debt…now as far as anyone can remember, this ministry has always been held by a minister from either Hezbollah or Amal…
· During the days of Omar Karami, 2 Billion Dollars were incurred, and today those two billion have become 16 billion thanks to the interest rates that have accumulated…
· From the days of the Hoss government, we have around 14 Billion Dollars…
Do you have a calculator??? Add up 12+16+14 how much did you get? Sorry I did not hear you???
A: (changing the subject once again) But Paris 3 and the economic reform will dry us clean…it’s obviously a plot to make us poorer than we already are…the taxes that will be levied, the VAT all of these are unbearable…
O: well, ok…let’s see now: how do you propose to repay the 40 something billion you already have as debt??? I mean do you expect to be printing money sheets like Hezbollah were doing back in the time or do you believe that someone will come with a magic stick and wipe the slate clean??? Tell me how will you repay the debt if you don’t levy taxes???
Plus, have you read the economic reform paper?? ( OK I felt a little weird saying this phrase because I had heard it so many times from them J ):
· Did you read about the pay cuts that will be applied on MP and Ministers (both present and past) salaries????
· Did you read about the new jobs that will be created through the foreign investments that this will bring?
· Did you red about the potential increase in salaries and wages as a result of the bettering of the national economy???
I could go on and on but I suggest you read it for yourself since you guys are so keen at reading the lines and between the lines….
Plus, in your mind, the paper will be applied like this??? Without any discussions in the parliament?
A: (light bulbs lighting up in his eyes) Ahhh but the parliament is at a standstill…
O: well it is, is it not? and thanks to who pray tell???? thanks to Berri!!! and isnt Berri your Ally in 8th of March? so its thanks to your ally that the parliament is at a standstill no??? Why doesn’t he convene it and all those issues will be placed in front of the nations MPs and will be discussed in the normal DEMOCRATIC way…I mean you talk about democracy, it starts by respecting and applying the democratic process…does it not????
A: Eh bass you guys in the LFs are thugs…you have always been criminals and think you can rule people with your militia mentality…
At this point I just gave up…

Dear Othello,
I am sorry to know that you are still wasting your time convincing an orange.
Oranges are made to be squeezed (as for yellow Lemons, while greens should preferably be steamed for better results) for their juice. Not to reason with it.

So true!! no logic in their arguments… they are following blindly a mad man’s quest for power..
7. SLAYER | January 24th, 2007 at 10:10 pm
i swear deja vu all over again…but the problem is the more we try to reason with them to find one reason why they follow “el general” the more they start to call us zo3ran n ssira2in…my point of view:”to hell with them…let’s see them come and beg for our help when thay get back stabbed by hizballa”.the difference is that we’ll help them knowin that they wouldn’t…it goes to show you what kind of people they really are.

Think about a time when you had a very heated argument with a friend or family member or coworker. The more you pushed them, the more defensive they became. The more you attacked their logic, the more they fell back on irrational arguments, perhaps even resorting to name-calling or other attacks. Sound familiar?
Now think about a time when that didn’t happen, a time when a heated argument started, but you were able to reach out and find common ground with the other person, and they calmed down and maybe even thought about what you had said and came back later and agreed with you.
What was the difference between these two situations?
In the second case, you probably reframed the discussion, so that instead of being an enemy you suddenly became someone who had something in common with your him/her, someone who maybe differed on some points but who wasn’t really an enemy after all. Maybe you were even able to lead them to “discover” a compromise position. And because they thought of it as their idea, they naturally found it to be very attractive. (Remember, if you want the boss to adopt an idea, make sure the boss thinks it was his idea
Can you apply that lesson when dealing with these guys?
The first case is analogous to charging straight into the guns of an advancing army. Assuming that you are actually strong enough to push them back (as you were in this case), what you do is push them back toward their reinforcements, or else trap them against a psychological wall — and then they fight viciously and irrationally.
The second case is analogous to going around the opponent. He doesn’t expect it. He’s expecting that frontal attack. He is thrown off balance, and he has to regroup. He has a hard time falling back on the irrational idea that you’re some kind of thug, because you have stuff in common with him. You aren’t attacking him but rather asking him to help make a humanly imperfect Lebanon into a better place. You’re not telling him that it’s you vs. him; you’re saying “we have to put out this fire before it incinerates our country and maybe kills our families.”
They’re being extremely defensive. Deep in their hearts, they know they’re in trouble, but they will fight like crazy to avoid admitting it to you.
So find ways to go around behind that defensive shield instead of charging straight into their defenses. You have a much stronger chance of shifting their position if you do so.
