What I Was… And Why I No Longer Am

Before I begin my first post I would like to make it clear that the subject I’m about to tackle is not meant to discredit the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) ,its members or its leaders. What I am offering is a personal memoire of my experience with the FPM.

I was raised in a family that was largely influenced by the Lebanese Forces. Ever since i was a child I was exposed to the idea of the Christian survival in the middle-east and in Lebanon specifically. I grew up knowing that there was this person called Geagea who people called El-Hakim, and there was this other person called Aoun, who apparently was in France for some reason. Little did I understand Lebanese politics at the time. But I always noticed something different about the Lebanese society as a whole. I would notice the lack of patriotism, not that there weren’t any patriots back then, but as a young impressionable child I did not know that you were not allowed to be patriotic. But then again neither was I taught to be patriotic.

Naturally since I grew up amongst LF supporters I became one, but seeing that I did not understand much about politics back then my opinions slowly started to change and mold as I grew older. Then finally when the partial elections sparked the first mini-revolt in Lebanon against the Syrian puppet regime in Lebanon, I was introduced by television to this man named General Michel Aoun. I was able to for the first time to make my own personal judgment about him. He was able to say exactly what I wanted to say about the current Lebanese government, the Syrian presence and the whole political situation. That was when I noticed him and his movement. The so-called FPM. Then on the 7th of August 2001, when I saw the FPM students being beaten by our own security forces. I was full of rage and anger, and at that moment I decided to find out more about the FPM.

Things proceeded and time went by. I became a committed FPMer, and although I never had the ability to participate directly in a lot of the events held before the 14th of March, 2005 I was a firm believer and supporter of the FPM’s ideology and would participate in online political debates heatedly. But then came the day when things in the FPM suddenly changed. Something called the memorandom of understanding had just been signed between the FPM and HizbAllah. I was shocked by this so-called understanding. The same people that considered HizbAllah a terrorist organization that should be disarmed, were now considering it their best-friend, and sadly i went with the tide.

I decided to give this MoU a chance. It contained a lot of positive initiatives, such as allowing Lebanese refugees in Israel to return, and the further investigation of the Lebanese in Syrian prisoners. Time went by and I still saw nothing concrete coming out of this understanding. A lot FPMers including myself gave the excuse that this is not an alliance but an understanding and that the FPM was just working on taming the wild best, that was HA. Yet on the 12th of July I realized that neither was this best tamed, and neither were the words written down in the MoU any closer to being accomplished. Hassan Nasrallah decided to declare war on the Israelis and therefore inciting them and giving them the excuse to bomb Lebanese cities, towns, and even infrastructure. He was convinced that what he was doing was right, and would do it at any cost. He told the Lebanese people that they would be compensated with ‘clean’ money, as if money could give them their loved ones back. Nevertheless, HA and their leader proved to be a loose cannon that would bring Lebanon to the brink of destruction at a heart beat if they got the chance. General Michel Aoun a man that I once trusted, kept quite during this time, not condemning what HA was putting the country through, or the condemning the rhetorical speeches coming out of HN’s mouth. All of this… to keep their weapons at the cost of the country keeping what economical dignity it had left.

At that point. Realizing the FPM’s incapability of accomplishing anything close to what to the MoU stated, and their seemingly junior partner position in such a deal. I decided to stop being an FPMer.
