Arab initiative confused both teams ..
Posted by N10452I am not sure if that was the intention, but the Arab initiative was a total confusion for both teams and ironically it serves first and foremost the Christians ..
First of all a quick reminder of what the plan calls for :
The Arab League’s three-point plan calls for the election of army chief Michel Sleiman as president, the formation of a national unity government in which no one party has veto power, and the adoption of a new electoral law.
Why is that serving the Christians most?
It is asking for the election of a new president ( Michel Suleiman) without any conditions ..
Of course i am still against him as a candidate, but what came next is very interesting and might server us on the long term and even now if the Christians of both teams realize its importance ..
The same plan asks that the president be given the 1/3 of the cabinet and that is a huge advantage for us Christians if we manage to keep it that way ..
This point here confused Aoun, who realized that achieved one of his demands.
It confused Hezbollah, who in my opinion will keep on refusing it since he wants full control.
It confused M14 team, because they already had a bad experience with a General in power before and dont want to repeat the same mistake.
I say All Christians should accept this initiative now, and try to get the best out of it ..
After all, our leaders are the ones who got us here, and unfortunatelly, its the least worse exit ..

Our problem us the Christians is that we couldn’t benefited from any good opportunity in our political history in Lebanon, and since the independence, all our Maronite leaders were too busy in their race for Presidency, and that’s why they haven’t managed to agree except when they have faced a sole ennemy.
They fought hard in 1975 against the Palestinians.
Again they fought harder between 1978 and 1990 against the Syrians, and most of them are still fighting.
But unfortunately, they will never be united, as long as we have traitors in their ranks, and Aoun is the best example for that.
So again, we will not be able to grab that chance, because someone is thinking only about the “chair” and his own interests.
Another point of view, i personally think that the Syrians are divided now, they have 2 parties, one represented by Bashar, Shareh and Moallim. this party has truly agreed on the Arab initiative, because they were promised a lot of money from the Gulf countries, as well as some partial agreement regarding the Golan district, and mostly they were promised not to be hurt by the Tribunal while keeping the regime alive.
On the other hand, there is the second party, which consists mainly of Assaf Shawkat, Rustom Ghazali, and Maher Assad and Co. This party fond out that they were a subject of a deal to bring them to justice. in that way, Bashar and co. will get rid of them and their problems, and on the other hand he wil close the chapter of the tribunal by handing them to the international community without being involved.
But what hapened is that the Assaf team is supoorted by Iran, and still have Power in hand, and for that reason the border was closed few days ago, it was a message that the Syrian leadership has lost the cards, and it’s Iran who’s playing the big role now, and that’s why Larijani visited Syria twice in a couple of days, the first time before the initiative was announced and the secon after, and he called Hassan Khalil and Ali Hassan Khalil and others for a meeting to inform them how they should fail ths initiative.
It’s obvious now that Iran and the US are leading in both sides, and they are both extremists, so i’m seeing a worse scenario in the near future.

“All Christians…”?
You mean “All Lebanese should accept this initiative”. True it may serve the Christians, divided between both extremeties, may have a solution between their hands, or a problem among their own camps.
Point two:”the formation of a national unity government in which no one party has veto power”
needs more elaboration. We’ll have to wait for the details.

N,
i don’t think the initiative meant to give the president 1/3 of the cabinet…it’s like dividing 10-10-10…which is bullshit…
like this the majority cannot stop any decision taken by the opposition and the president, what will be the consequence?? the majority in the parliament will announce that the cabinet is “un-trustfull”, the cabinet will be down and the same problem will repeat itself….
i would say that the initiative meant the explanation of Jumblat and hariri: 14-10-6.
Secondly, we are sure that this initiative is for the next cabinet to solve the current situation but it’s not a forever initiative, in the future everything can change (maybe the opposition will not be in the cabinet)…
Cheers,

This is why Aoun and hezbollah accepeted it and they said lets name the ministries before we proceed with the plan
But no M14 wants the election first then the ministries later on , as if they are gonna fool the christians again , by putting michel sleiman and making the government they want….
So yes it helped the christians , but now we know who doesnt want the christians to have an equal power

Screw them all. If they really wanted to help Lebanon they would have at lease armed the lebanese army.

Guys,
I hope no one was hurt by the Karantina explosion….
So it is a message for the Americans now….
the situation is more and more dangerous.
Anyoner remember the assassination of the American ambassador in Beirut Francis Maloy in in 1976??? i think we’re seeing similar things at the moment
10. Ziad | January 15th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
Rodge,
Its an open war now. Khameni said that they will defeat the Americans in Lebanon and that’s the beginning. More to come I am sure.
11. Tarek | January 15th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
If Iran really wanted to fight U.S., it would have helped the resistance in Afghanistan and Iraq. Iran is just playing the role of the “bo3 bo3″ so US can sell weapons to the gulf. Multi billion dollars arms deal is now being negotiated in the gulf. That’s beside the recently made arms deals. With respect to the tension between Iran and U.S, it’s just a play and it’s most entertaining! If the U.S really wanted to back up Lebanon and free it from Iran and Syria it would have at least armed the lebanese army and reduced the Lebanese debt.

Tarek
For once, I agree with you …
13. Condor | January 15th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Tarek,
What interest does Iran have in US selling weapons to the gulf countries? I can uderstand the US crying wolf to scare them but where does this help Iran?
14. Tarek | January 16th, 2008 at 12:01 am
Condor,
It helps the American Iranian relationship!!! You scare them, I sell them weapons and Iran will get a larger share of the region in addition to more collaboration between U.S and Iran, protecting each other’s necks. Anything going wrong in the region will affect both Iran and the U.S., they both collaborate to make sure that everything will stay under their control and to their benefit.
