U.S Elections
Posted by N10452
After the longest, most expensive election campaign in US history, voters are about to elect the 44th president.
More than 130 million Americans will vote today for either Democrat Barak Obama or Republican John McCain.
I already posted asking people who they favoured without expressing my opinion on that issue, i thought it would be better to hear others’ opinions before giving mine
I am a pro-Republican in general, however i am very dissapointed by their candidates this year, be it from aging McCain to Palin who appeared as a good choice at first, attracting traditionalists and highly religious people, but who turned out to be a complete disaster.
(the prank call was truly embarassing !! )
Does that mean Obama is the right choice ? definitly not ..
Despite being smart, charismatic and enthusiastic,The young man is very mysterious, his advisors are very vague people with unknown backgrounds, his whole idealistic campaign is too good to be true.
He made several contradictions throughout his campaign, he spoke of change but was always flipping on certain crucial topics (Iraq, banning guns, etc ..)
Added to that, he is denying without really denying his Muslim roots, to try gain more votes from the Muslim voters, not to mention him being black will boost the rate of participation of the American African community. ( polls are saying up to 60% are voting this year)
As for McCain, he did not elaborate any pragmatic approach to the Iraqi situation, and if he continues like Bush did, the US will screw up further militarily and leave the whole world in chaos and wake the sleeping beats ( Russia, North Korea etc ..), not to mention losing control over Afghanistan & Pakistan .. Economically speaking, it is not sure his plan is gonna stop the US from going into recession, so it is not a criteria on which we can base ourselves ..
So who would i vote for ?
For America’s sake, i would still go with McCain over Obama, simply because Obama will humiliate the US if he retreats from Iraq and ruin its reputation and even strenghen the Islamists in the world and make them believe terrorism will get them further achievements. Added to that, Obama’s economic plan is a big question mark and is not that promising ..
For Lebanon’s sake, i honestly believe neither candidates will provide any concrete support to Lebanon, because we Lebanese dont deserve it and screwed up big time. Republicans can give back Syria a regional role, while Democrats can withdraw (politically) from the region and make us further isolated and threatened by Hezbollah & Syria.
Thats about it ..

Well Great analysis N,
But I have to disagree with you about the retreat from Iraq, since I guess he won’t be able to do that despite the fact he’s willing to. The Military institutions are so strong in the US, and any decision could not be taken without their approval or satisfaction, that’s why I think he will not find it easy to make that decision, and his movement will be restricted in that matter.
I’m not sure yet who is better for the US or the world in general.
Eventhough I’m also pro-Republican by origin, I still go for Obama, cause I see that we need a change, maybe the Republicans will learn some lessons and change things to come back better in 4 years.
We need to forget all the miseries we saw during the Bush double terms in power.

However I think Palin is a smart, honest and straightforwad lady but not used to media tricks and fell prey to Pranks… I like her and think she will have a great future as a Republicain leader..yu will see.

I agree that McCain and later Palin were a disappointment!
Obama denied (and he is right) that he is Muslim and trying hard to aviod the Muslim community in the US like it has a dangerous contagious disease! If he was elected, he will do everything possible to not show any slight sympathy to the Arab or Muslim cause! He will be a hardliner on that issue.
8. Fuziyad | November 4th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Rima?? you like Palin?? uff…3ala chou?? she is both intolerant and uneducated, the worse of 2 worlds…
Despite the factI think Mc Cain might be better for lebanon(not sure), the closer we got from this election the more I get pro obama to a point where I even leave the lebanese interests behind… Obama election is a symbol that all is possible, this will bring hope to people all around the world and will definitely make our planet a better place…

The bush era?? that’s the era that got the syrian troops out of lebanon!! akid hallal!!
and on the non mid east issues I think bush managed to get most of the west very much anti-conservatism which is good too…
we will miss you W
11. ja3far | November 4th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
yep… i will miss seeing the american flagus being burned around the world welcoming bush visits..
the good old days

At least Palin governed a state with over 80% approval rating. If it were not for the bias media coverage, she would have been made out to be a great addition to any ticket.
If Obama does make it, you can all say bye to a free world.

no doubt that
7AJJ HUSSEIN OBAMA WILL WIN

i am with the white one.
16. Ali | November 4th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
the americans will retreat and Iraq will be Vietnam newest version . they will also fail to sign the treaty they want!
to me, both candidates are the same . the american strategy doesnt depend on a person.. however Obama is a better choice cause he believes in dialogue!
17. ja3far | November 4th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
ali … the treaty will be a gift from the iraqui and the iranian to the new president … a new page is opened and things are going to the best…

I think McCain will win the elections for one reason only:
- I don’t think the whites will vote to a black especially the southern whites.
19. Danny Badr | November 4th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
KOUWATJE,
wishful thinking my friend!!! Even if all the whites in the south vote mccain…rememebr its not the popular votes that win, its the electoral college.
The only hope MCcain has is if heavywiehgt Geagea throws in his support in the last minute.
hehehehe
game over baby
20. Mickel | November 4th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
I’m afraid that obama is going to win this one, he’s puled away now, and McCain can’t catch up.
21. paul | November 4th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Mickel, woe betide the world when the most powerful man do not know where he can find his roots.

Palin is a joke! You might as well elect a highschool teenager into office rather than her. If you actually listen to what she says, youll know shell make no sense. On the economy, NO AMERICAN PRESIDENT really has control over the domestic economy because it is being tugged back and forth and is a self fixed system, however, the US president CAN change foreign affairs, which I believe Obama is better at. Anybody who knows ANYTHING about Iraq knows that the only way for violence to stop is for America to GET OUT. Obama has set out plans for Iraq which includes shifting responsibility to the Iraqi govt. and also setting a timetable for withdrawl. Dont worry about the US being humiliated by withdrawing, they were already humiliated when they invaded!

Rima
You have been my freind !
Mickel
I voted for ralph/gonzalez !! this way i have nothing to do with future corruption .
Bottom line : Both Obama and mcCain have a failure plan on how to fix the economy .
Nader isn’t going to win, and it honestly doesn’t matter if McCain or obama win. They are two sides of the same party. But at least I know I made a good choice and voted for the person I truly believe would make the changes my son needs in this country.
At last ya Mickel , Ralph will never attack lebanon …
29. Doc 1559 | November 5th, 2008 at 6:04 am
Yalla Obama won !! Allah y3inkun ya chabeb … Akaltouwa !!

I think I heard Obama saying he will reduce the US reliance on gulf oil by promoting clean technologies. He also mentioned that by doing that he will weaken Iran…
After all, he is the USA President and will only work to secure American interests…let’s remember the withdrawal of troops from Iraq does not mean the withdrawal of the USA military bases from the Middle East.
Regarding Lebanon, I don’t see why Obama is going to give it as a gift to Syria…This time, unlike the senior Assad era, Syria sided by terrorists to defeat Americans…Logically, we might have another status quo era…nthg will change in Lebanon for awhile and it is not in Iran’s interest to mess with Obama by stirring HA against Israel or against the government…
Ali, I know now why you don’t care about both presidents…coz you know they are both bad news to the Middle East…which is ok for me.
Cheers
