Christians and the Lebanese Army
Posted by N10452I’ve had a heated discussion with one of my friends over the decision taken by the government to call the reservists to assist the army in redeploying in the South.
One of the major factors that led to immigration during the past 15 years was the military service, added to the political and economical factors, since young men were forced to serve for a year and waste their time in a syrian controlled army standing on check points all days and nights.
Hezbollah’s war against Israel is almost finished now, and the government took a historical decision by asking the Lebanese army to deploy in the South.
Most of the Christians’ reaction would be a negative one, no one willing to yet again stop their professional carreer to serve in the army and would travel and not risk losing their jobs.
Now some might say this is a selfish approach and that Christian leaders have been asking forever for the army to deploy in the South, and when the time came, no one is willing to go.
I believe the reasons behind this refusal are way deeper than that and are somehow justifiable, even though i do blame some of the Christians for their passive harmful attitude, critisizing and nagging and running away when action is required, and i blame some Christian leaderships for not encouraging the youth to integrate the army and other governmental factions.
First of all, i believe the Lebanese army is one of the most rotten and useless institutions we had, since it never fought any war when needed and never defended its own people and got divided on every occasion. It is run by a rotten chehabist line that i find disastrous.
During the 1950s, it stood between Palestinains and some Lebanese armed factions and the president Chamoun instead of doing its constitutional duty to defend the president.
Later in the 60s, it got divided and joined the armed militias instead of preserving the country’s security. In the 90s, it was responsible for beating up the youth, jailing them, setting checkpoints to harass them and defend the Syrians and Pro-Syrians in Lebanon, 7th of August is a clear proof.
All those incidents cannot but boost the feeling of hatred and disrespect that most of the young men, mainly the Christians who were exposed to all those humilitians during their struggle for freedom, towards the army and justify their choice of running away from their duties cause of their past experience with this institution.
Now given that its a critical situation and that our young men are needed to serve in the South and that its the only way to guarantee Lebanon’s sovereignty and make sure Hezbollah is disarmed and Israel is fully out, i partially blame the Christian leaders for not initiating their followers to join the army regardless of the consequences and help out in resolving this issue, of course while giving them some guarantees for the future.
Similary the government should wisely recall the reservists and not turn this decision into another unpopular one. Everyone was supportive of the government, but in return it must let us believe in it and trust it and to a certain extent, given the history of the army and its pratices, convince the youth in general and specifically the Christian youth of joining the army through fast and pratical methods since we only have a week or two.
What i propose though is that the government asks the General surety and police to help the army redeploy and assist in monitoring the regions since the police is one of the oldest and successfull and efficient institutions in Lebanon and it is well armed too.

Ya Chabeb, What a shame - Here we go again - All we care is our own interest - We want a strong Lebanon but NO ONE IS READY to take up the arms to build such a country. May I suggest then that the best way is to declare Lebanon NEUTRAL. NEUTRALITY like Switzerland means we make peace with all our neighbors and disband the armed forces (Hey Costa Rica does not have armed forces) and we would rely on Police forces. This presuppose that the citizens of Lebanon agree altogether (by way of a Referundum). But this is all UTOPIA no?

What a joke!

A well-reasoned post which clearly shows the dilemna facing the young men in Lebanon. What about the idea proposed by Battal Agha? Could Lebanon declare itself a neutral country?
I hope that Lebanon is quite unified and committed to rebuilding together. Sometimes I think that peace is so simple: everyone follows the rule to treat others as they would themselves like to be treated–but it cannot be simple because there is little peace anywhere! I’d like a Utopia! I’m ready for Utopia! Hope better days are ahead (and soon!) for all of you in Lebanon, best wishes from lynne in Texas
