So i went to the North this weekend to visit a friend near Tripoli, and i got to go out and hang around a bit in Tripoli and i kept listening to some of his friends talking about the city and the activities going around ..

First of all, you cannot possibly find any pub, night club or whatsoever .. no one DARES to open such a thing because they might get bombed or god knows what …

This is Tripoli i remind you, North of Lebanon, not Iraq.
The Restaurants barely serve any alcohol, of course arguileh ( which is probably 10 times more harmful ) is allowed ..

Added to that, you barely spot any girl around here, i always heard about Tripoli being the gay capital of Lebanon, well maybe thats the case cause you cant find any girls around, so the guys get creative :-)

Sadly enough its quite a nice region overviewing the sea and there are lots of beach resorts, but its all buildings and walls, no spirit in that town ..

I dont think i can last longer than a weekend here, but its a good place to go to if you just wanna relax and lie down a bit ..

Finally, there are still few hours till i get back to civilization !

But not all the city is the same N,

Al Mina araea for example is so different as i remember, i don’t know if it changed now, but i know Tripoli well the upper areas (Bab Tebbaneh, Baal Mohsen etc…) are different than the coastal ones (Al Mina – Azmi street…)

Anyway, anyone watched Elie Mahfoud’s press conference today? he said very interesting things, i advise all to look for what he said in details. He talked about the way HA is islamizing Lebanon, and of course mainly through Aoun and his people. what’s happening is so dangerous.
I like that Mahfoud guy, in particular because he knows Aoun so well

    please post my comment:

    Dear N10452,

your post is non sense, i simply consider it as an insult to me, i’m from Tripoli, the city is more civilized than Beirut itself. i don’t know where u went in the city. who told you there’s no alchohol? where you checked, it seems u went to wrong place, as if i go to Dahieh jnoubieh, and after i came back here and wrote a blog about Beirut, based on such experience.
Tripoli is not what you explained, u can find alchohol in most restaurants in el mina road, port said, Zahrieh or even in Bab el tebeneh. the street of Munlla or Azmi or Sakafi and 200 as well as Marrad street are well planned and designed, simply they are the best in Lebanon.
you talk about the girls in the street, it seems u never heard about the promanade that all christians from Koura, Zghorta come too, just to look at the beautiful girls of Tripoli, well educated with culture. AUB & LAU and Balamand Universities are packed with them. to remind you Nancy Afiouny is from Tripoli, miss world Peagant for this year.
Civilazation is never mentioned by the number of pubs or night clubs. Tripoli as a city, we are proud of it and we wish your civilazation never come to it. we like Tripoli as is, because it has its identity as capital of culture and family coherence.
i wish by my reply i’m not offending you. but you really insult a great city by its roots.
by the way lot of our brave comrads come from Tripoli as well.
    regards,
    we are here to stay.

First, there were never a pub, a night club or any of that in Tripoli and that for many people is the right choice so let them be. I respect their choice. Having said that, there are many extremists amongst their mix but it all depends on the neighborhood. Overall, thumbs up to the people of Tripoli for their beautiful spirit, their love of life, and all the nice food and baklawa.

GAY CAPITAL OF LEBANON!!!!!!!! have you been to Jounieh lately, take a tour around kasslik and let me know what you find. Not that i’m condemning gay people here.
Plus, i find it very strange that you didnt find any girls, if you’re in tripolis again soon, just head to Gingers near the City Complex mall, take a seat and enjoy the view.
I think that absence Nightclubs\alcohol serving restaurants is very annoying, but theres lots of alternatives to have a drink and spend a nice evening out. i think you made a quick judgment here N. you should spend more time there and reconsider

  • 9. N10452 | January 13th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

    Darko,
I have been to Jounieh a LOT lately and i have seen the most beautiful girls and they keep on coming … so you are very wrong my friend …

  • 10. N10452 | January 13th, 2008 at 8:10 pm

    Ziad Italy,
I know Tripoli and i was with some guys who know where to have fun, guys from Tripoli and sunnites and they were telling me how they tried once to open a khayme ramadaniyye and received a call to close it a week after ..

I was there for two days and barely saw any girls, and by girls i mean acceptable ones :D

Its all restaurants mainly, there is only the Mina as someone said which is nice, but Tripoli is boring ..

    Appo,

I never said there are no beautiful girls in Tripoli, but you dont SEE the girls in Tripoli and i wasnt in Tripoli Mina .. They all go outside Tripoli to party etc ..

The regions where there are some Christians are the ones prosperous only ..

well tripoli is just about hanging out with ur friends. With respect to girls, you can find some, but like 10% of what you can find in beirut. Recreations, there are some, but not that much. You have only one cinema theater, circuit planet in city complex. There are no one balling center. Plenty of restaurants, but you will get bored of eating !!!! One acceptable hotel. The only thing that is available is sport centers for football and basket ball. Activities!? Forget about it! No theater, no concerts, not even sport tournaments!! The city is dead!!! The only thing I can do is just go to the sea side and watch the sunset!!!! If ur living in tripoli it’s not that bad! you can always get out the city to the mountain behind do a camping. Or just go to batroon but the city its self is DEAD!

  • 14. Darko | January 13th, 2008 at 10:01 pm

Dude, dont get me wrong, i didnt say that anything about the girls of jounieh, i mean i’ve been living in kasslik for the last 3 months and i know, u can get a hard-on just from walking down the street, what i was saying is that here u’ll find a hell alot more gays then in tripolis. But i guess u made ur intentions clear, u just wrote this article to say that christians areas are way better then muslim ones, witch to some extente is true but not with the scale that u use(alcool\pubs) its far more deep then that

  • 15. N10452 | January 13th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

    Darko,
What you concluded is completly absurd … i am not saying christians areas are better or whatever … i didnt intend to turn it into a religious manner here .. Most of my sunnite friends found Tripoli and all its surroundings boring and go to Batroun or Beirut to have fun ..

All i am saying is that whenever you have more Christians living around and less Muslim fanatics, you will definitly find more ‘fun’ places to hang out at ..

I am still not sure how you came up with such a lame conclusion ..

As for Kaslik, i never saw gays walking around there .. if u are talking about girly dressed guys, those are not gays :-)

I never saw 2 guys holding hands in Kaslik and i know this place by heart ..

This is absurd, stupid and idiotic. Please delete this section. It is too low of standard and class that you have set for yourself.

    hi N,

first of all, let me say that i really love tripoli and only wish it could be let free to develop as its majority sees fit… the most important observation in your post was this:

“First of all, you cannot possibly find any pub, night club or whatsoever .. no one DARES to open such a thing because they might get bombed or god knows what”

a friend of mine from tripoli told me about how a few years ago someone did open a pub there… it was very successful for a few days but within the FIRST WEEK it got bombed and the owner just decided to shut down… wasn’t worth it.

it’s not about islamic culture — you look at islamic cities like cairo or amman or damascus, they all have a few pubs and clubs. the majority of tripoli residents, muslim or christian, just want to live in an open place… if they don’t drink, they don’t have to go somewhere that serves alcohol but they respect giving people the choice. maybe they don’t want gemmayze in tripoli but a few pubs… almost no one would object.

the problem is the strong minority presence of fanatics, fateh al islam-style. they scare everyone away from the free lifestyle. my friend told me, any western chain — doesn’t matter if they serve alcohol — knows when they open they will probably be bombed at least once. it’s a risk they take.

this is an absolutely shameful state of affairs, and for the sake of all lebanon more should be done to combat it. it’s not right that our brothers and sisters in the north have to live in fear of these motherf***ers.

  • 18. Darko | January 14th, 2008 at 2:06 am

    comment 10:
The regions where there are some Christians are the ones prosperous only ..

    that’s exactly what you’re saying.
since you know kasslik, just take a ride to residence ja3ja3 and check the activity around it. i really dont wanna get into an argument about gay people but i just didnt like you calling tripolis Gay capital of lebanon.
Hell, just a couple days ago i was getting out of the uni and a guy walking in front of me came up to another one and kissed him on the mouth, what do you call that “Brotherly love”.
Anywaz you really need to reconsider this article

  • 19. eddie | January 14th, 2008 at 9:53 pm

i love what u wrote.that was very funny..

  • 20. abdallah | January 20th, 2008 at 2:37 am

hey for the one who wrote this article .
im abdallah , im from tripoli , my family was here more than 80 years now , 1st i just want to say that there are more than 450 000 person lives in tripoli , how come u didnt found beautiful girls i dont know , but im sure that u entered tripoli in really bad time , or i dont know the place where u went in , cause in tripoli and just in mina there are more than 10 pubs opened to all , and muslims in it more than the christian by the way , 2nd , u didnt find girls god forgives u , i think u enterd tripoli in a really late time , like 10 and more i think , if u want to see the kind of girls u want just tell me and i will shaw u , the one u dont like it , dont even count it , the only thing u said it , and was true , that really there is no night clubs , why ? , i think no one dare , but in the future the y will do one trust me , and about dead city , no it is not honestly , cause in the weekend , all th streets from the hitoricle old clock in tal to the very end el mina , u will find the life there so crouded till 9 or 10 in the night , and if u go to el mina , in mino street and even stay to 12 and more .

and about the gays stuff , evry where u will always find gays , in da7ieh u will find , in nabatieh in ba3albak , and even in hamra and jounieh me3ameltan this is normal , but saying that tripoli is the city gays is totally wrong please man be logical , the gays in tripoli u can know them immediatly , but the gays in other region in lebanon so hard to know , cause u can find a lot os soft guys , some them is gay , and some of them are not , but in tripoli , when find one speaking , acting , walking softly , smoothly or like girls , he is 90% gay , but they are so few , trust me.

i hope read it , and i wiched u visit this city before tammouz war , u will find so speacial things , and now , not like before , but wait till this situation will settle down a bit , and suggest all of who like old cties , come to tripoli specialy to my area el mina , u will love it trust me.

abdallah , from massle7et el tellab el ouwet el lebnanieh , al mina.

u guys r so stupid for arguing over something like this. each city in any country is known for different things.
i live in canada and every city is different for something else. don’t put religon is this. i went to school for one year in tripoli and it is a nice city, not as lively as beirut and jouneah but it’s nice to walk around, go shopping, have luch or supper and cruise around.
every city has it’s own personality wherever u go in this world. u lebanese have to stop putting this religous and mafia type things betweeen each other or we will nevre get anywhere to have a peaceful lebanon.
please take my word, my opinion, i love lebanon and the lebanese and everything to do with lebanon and i always follow politics but this is not the way for us to keep going against each other for stupid reasons.
we need to make a true lebanon, a LEBANESE LEBANON for all of us.
I have lots to say and discuss. i don’t often visit this website as i don’t have much time but i would like to always keepn in touch with people like you. so my email is aandary@hotmail.com. please feel free to add me to msn or email me to keep in touch.
i like to have many lebanese friends as possible as i love lebanon :)

  • 22. marwan | June 17th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

guys with respect to all ur views but i guess no one has really presented the just opinion for tripoli…but like tripoli like batroun, like kaslik, like saida, nothing is like beirut.i am from beirut and lived for one year in tripoli.tripoli is a wonderful city.it has alcohol in some pubs(altho no nights) and usual restaurants in “hi-life” areas.as to girls i always find girls and pretty ones, maybe not half naked due to the traditions of this city.plus the majority of the youth in tripoli are well educated men and women graduating from LAU,AUB,UOB and other respectful universities and schools.i was actually offended by “Bachi 7ay fina” when he related fa2ir(poverty) to praying on friday..man go get a life.one last thing, as any city or district around the world it is normal to find “poor” and”rich” regions and each has it’s characteristics. Guys..please drop the religious thought because it is our manners which control us not our religions regardless of our spiritual conformations.. :)

  • 23. mentality | August 14th, 2008 at 11:06 am

What the hell? hehehe …it seems that the place you were staying at is in al tebeneh area , you were discribing it ? of course what you mentioned is not true … or as someone said you were discribing tripoli at 6:00am hehehehe … ya Habibi go to Al Mina City to a street called MINO … you can find all your fantasies there …but it seems that the people you know in tripoli live in bab al ramel , sway2a , tebeneh or 2ebbeh hehehehe ….
