For those who critisize the Patriarch, this man has shown more wisdom than any other politician or religious figure for the past 20 years.

Allah yitawwil bi 3omro !

From Naharnet:
Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir said that poll outcome has prevented takeover by Iran and Syria.
Had the opposition won parliamentary elections, “Syria and Iran would have taken control of our country,” Sfeir said in remarks to al-Massira magazine, excerpts of which were published on Friday evening.

The opposition “wanted to take over Lebanon,” Sfeir stressed. “They can say what they want. But the president is the president. He is the one who rules Lebanon now.”

Asked whether he was pleased to see that the political weight did not go to March 8 forces, Sfeir said: “Don’t you know that weight transfer means that both Iran and Syria and Palestinians in the opposition would have gained the upper hand in the Lebanon situation.”

Sfeir said Syria “still has some ambitions in Lebanon” even after it withdrew its troops from Lebanon in 2005.

He stressed that the presence of pro-government forces and the opposition in the government is “not encouraging in light of hindrance and veto” threats.

    To Patriarch sfeir :

in the 90’s you agreed on the syrians and now you’re backing the saudis ! You just go the opposite side with Aoun. Why ? Arent you the batrak of all ? Arent we all Lebanese and should work on love and unity instead of hate and division?

I just want you to know the following ( I am not a christian) but lemme tell what I have been hearing from my Christian freinds:

50% of the Christians dont accept you anymore. You do not represent them, I am hearing it from them on the daily basis. My Christian freinds are not against the church , they are agaisnt you in the church. It is not like the old days anymore, where the preists and macheyikh were the only educated people in the daya3 !! It is 2009, and future will always remember our actions.

MR PATRIARCH NOW YOU WANNA GIVE GARANTEES TO HA’S WEAPON ???? WASNT ALL M14 ELECTORAL CAMPAING AGAISNT THE WEAPONS OF HA???

At last, do unto others as you would have them do unto you (Jesus )..

Thank you and may God bless you !!

    Doc1559,
The patriarch accepted the Syrians ??? 2ayya Syrians mennoun ??? dont tell me you are referring to Taef here …

Baddak zakrak el 2in2ileb 3al Taef keef sar ??

The Patriarch has always done his best to keep the Christian presidency intact and keep Lebanon free and sovereign …

This is an insult to the church and to the patriarch what you just said … so revise wisely your comments before you throw such attacks .

As far as the 50% you speak of, If Aoun doesnt like him and they vote for Aoun, doesnt mean they dont like the patriarch ;)

    False analogy.

Really ?? Have you spoken to Christian mou3rada guys recently ?? Have you been to their facebooks ?? Forums maybe?? Theynow like Aoun more than ever b4, and are working on boycotting the church.. Do you research my freind..

When a child commit smgth wrong over and over again, we correct the child and punish him if needed, but when an adult and a patriach or sheikh or whatever you wanna call it does the same wrong action twice and then expects the love of people, we simply scratch our dead brains and wonder what the hell is wrong with this guy.. This is the case here.. Mu3rada christians didnt expect the Patriarch to take on them the last minute (24 hrs b4 the election) and are now fed with …

My analogy is not wrong ya N, think about it .. look around you and see to yourself..

    Balad mazara333 3la kell al maylet….

Even though I agree, I would have expected he would be more diplomatic in his election response. Comments like this could create more friction in an already polarised Maronite community & that is the last thing we need.

Is there anywhere I can find the whole patriarch speech in English?

    Peace

    DOC1559,

You said in your post #2
“50% of the Christians dont accept you anymore. You do not represent them, I am hearing it from them on the daily basis.”

I have a simple question, DO YOU KNOW personnaly 50% of the christians to come up with these precise number ?

3anjad logic té3tirrr, the same logic that helped you win the elections last week (Hehehehehe)

    Allah ma3o lal métwélé.

It is quite shameful how we reached a point where people mock the Patriarch and dare speak to him that way … but this is the effect of allying with Hezbollah and losing all your values and principles .. kermel few seats …

I will not bother answer you.
Go read The Patriarch’s book .. u will know how wise this man was .. despite alll the small mistakes he might have done ..

Accusing the Patriarch of accepting the Syrians is a big big insult !! not just to him but to the Church …

You insulted him, not just direspected him.

I am also on the Facebook of the pro-Caporal. I want to tell you one thing. Only ONE. So you can remember it for a long time.

The Caporal will be recorded in our History as the one who has generated the most HATRED among Christians in the ENTIRE History of Lebanon!

He carries this hatred since a very long time!

Someone who spills hatred like he does is not Christian.

He is a little Hitler, a dictator, and a megalomaniac madman!

You are going to witness soon a big increase in his dementia which will bring him to his demise.

People like to criticize just to criticize.

Just like to remind everyone that the Batrak was the first religious leader in 2000 that said now it’s time for Syria to get out. I did not see Aoun against the Batraks’s political interference back then. Again when it suits the Fuhrer Aoun no comment but when it works against him out of the way.

There were rumors that Aoun was admit for a period of time to a mental institution, i guess it was true.

Who cares if he did or didn’t insult the Patriarch? Why is it so bad to say bad things about him? It’s not like he’s a god or something, he’s just a guy who works in the Church… are we really that retarded in Lebanon that we can’t speak shit about people from the religious institutions? On top of it if he wants to get involved in politics, well, he’s really not very holy anymore, he’s just another stupid lebanese leader wannabe.

  • 22. PIERRE | June 12th, 2009 at 8:17 pm

The Patriarch is a source of wisdom and guidance to the Lebanese and the Christians in particular. Our priests are not running political parties or running for elections or militias, Unlike others. They have an opinion and they are free to express there opinion.

  • 24. burger | June 12th, 2009 at 9:44 pm

    Pierre,

My point was that there is nothing wrong in talking shit about the religious leaders just because they are religious leaders. I said that because the previous discussion became an accusation and WARNING to Doc about insulting the patriarch… which is quite sad really.

As for the wisdom and guidance of the patriarch, whatever, thats a matter of personal opinion and has nothing to do with him being a patriarch or not… I honestly don’t know much about him or what he has accomplished in his life, I’d just rather if the religious institutions stuck to preaching morals and love rather than get involved in politics. It’s a bit “backwards” for religion and politics to be intertwined, specially since religious leaders are not chosen by the followers, they just follow blindly whoever is put in that position by the religious institutions :P Don’t you agree? Anyways, this is just how Lebanon works, it’s all good Sorry for my rant, laterz.

    Cartman,

What he meant was that Syria and Iran, through their alliance with Hizbollah and M8, would re/gain control of the Lebanon. But that is just crazy talk anyways… I don’t think the FPM, Amal, Hizbollah, Marada or whoever else is in M8 wants to let Syria or Iran gain any power in Lebanon, they all want it for themselves instead :P

As for religious leaders getting involved in politics, once u get nasrallah the rat to stop interfering with politics, then maybe…just maybe u’d have a saying in the patriarch’s wisdom,

Patriarch Sfeir is the head of our religion, do not dare and undermine his authority

  • 28. Maximus | June 12th, 2009 at 10:43 pm

When Patriarch Youhanna Maroun came to Lebanon in the 7th century and regrouped all Maronites in the Mountains, to avoid Arabs Mo3aya and Byzantine complicity against Maronites, he founded the modern lebanon. Arabs and Byzantines tried to attack him, accusing him of being an “agent” of the Pope. But they couldn’t do anythink against him because of christian warriors protecting him in the mountains stronghold. All what the Patriarch wanted, is to immunise his people from conquerors. Today, 14 centuries later, the maronite Patriarch is still here, not Maronites but a free Lebanon where Maronites, and their christian and muslim borthers can live free. And there is still some litte dogs, christians and muslims, who accuse him of being an “agent”…

    hochoz,

No thanks, I love life too much to do that.

I don’t understand your point about Bkerke being there since the declaration of independance of Lebanon? What does that have to do with anything? Bkerke is the institution. Sfeir has been at the head of that institution since 1986. Even though Sfeir represents Bkerke, he is still an individual. I still don’t get your point? sorry.

What does Nasrallah have to do with the wisdom of the patriarch? I don’t understand your logic.

You shouldn’t presume to have the power to tell other people what to do and not to do. I will dare to do whatever I want, whenever I want, however I want, thank you very much.

I must be really bored today to be wasting my time replying to you.. ah well.

Because you are transcripting some clichés from the West which supposed that “modernity” or “progressivness” means to desacralise religion. That do not work in lebanon, aprticulary amongst Maronites.
The maronite Patriarch is ELECTED by an electoral college composed of bishops and seculars. Patriarch Sfeir is the 76Th patriarch. You can not criticise ou FATHER as a banal bishop named by the Pope as in Europe or US. You don’t have any idea of what represent the Patriarch for the Maronites. And maybe you don’t knwo who are the Maronites. The Maronites are the only people in the World who hold the name of a SAINT. Their Identity, forged during 14 centuuries of resistance is based on their RELIGIOUS culture. The Patriarch is the center of their identity. It is not a question of separate politics and religious matters. It is a question of existence and identity in which the Patriarch is central.

  • 36. burger | June 13th, 2009 at 12:03 am

    Maximus,

I am a maronite, well, I was born a maronite :P So I do know a bit about that. And, as you probably already guessed, I’m not really from the West :P

Anyways, thanks for not insulting me or telling me to shut up like the other people, and for giving me a thoughful response.

I do know how important religion is in Lebanon to define a persons identity and existence, and I understand it. My point initially was that, as soon as religious institutions start getting involved in politics, they have to expect being treated and criticized like politicians. The reason is, even though all maronites share the same faith, they don’t share the same political views. Therefore, Bkerke shouldn’t alienate itself from believers by taking political stances that can’t agree with everyone. Bkerke and Sfeir brought this critisism on to themselves by taking a political stance that isn’t shared by all the FPMers… unforunately and Sfeir is now being criticized by other politicians, making him look a lot less holy, important and “pure” to all maronites and making Bkerke lose it’s lust and moral high ground…

Political matters concern taxes, budget, health policy, industrial development, eduaction programms… You can think that the patriarch should not take a position in “political matters”. Maybe. But when it comes to the structure of the state in which Maronites do live, the Patriarch can not but intervene. It is his duty. Aoun is not debating “political” matters, but is trying to change the structure of the State in a way that is the opposite of what Maronite believ since centuries. Maronites accepted not to be attached to the West in favor of Lebanon. But not in favor of the East. You can not deny this. You can approve Aoun. But you should not be surprised when the Patriarch stand against him.

    Maximus,

I agree with what you are saying. The problem is, Lebanon has 15 other religious groups than the maronites, and if each religious institution from each group gets involved in politics publically and wants to protect it’s own community, the only solution is war. Religious figures should stay away from politics and let politics be run by secular political groups who don’t represent a specific religious group but rather represent political ideas. Then, the different religious institutions can lobby their cause privately with the secular political groups and maintain their public image as ambassadors of faith.

The recent Bkerke and Aoun altercation hurts Bkerke much more than it hurts Aoun; it hurts the “holy” image of Bkerke. Politics are nasty business in Lebanon and Bkerke needs to maintain it’s moral high ground and only get involved privately behind closed doors as not to hurt that image.

“As for the separation of church and state…Please peddle that somewhere else! Since Lebanese system is based on sectarian balance your line of “analysis and reasoning” is nothing but bumpbkus!”

Have you ever read the Lebanese constitution? Go read it please and you will see that your statement is bogus. Let me quote a line from the preamble of our constitution :

“h. The abolition of political confessionalism is a basic national goal and shall be achieved according to a gradual plan.”

It then has a whole section entitled “[Part] F. On the Abolition of Political Confessionalism” and explains the steps and procedures to abolish confessionalism and go into a secular system. The current confesionalism is only meant to be a transitition.

You changed your religion? To what? Muslim? Or you renounced to any religion? Are you proud of your new status of modern consumer yuppy happy globe trotter? And you are inovating your new status of i am noone coming from nowhere by calling the Maronite Patriarch to not interfere in politics?
By tomorrow morning, get up to Mar Charbel, recite the Holy Rosary and you will rediscover who your are.

Let’s not get personal here… I didn’t mount any personal attacks on you, I expect the same in retrun. My personal faith is my problem and no one elses. Also, why do you care so much about my religion? What matters is what I am writing and discussing. For all you know, I could just invent a fictional character and be that person online… Maybe I am a fictional character :P Does it make a difference?

I was not talking religion or faith here, I was talking politics and so was Sfeir, I was talking about the relationship between religion, politics and state, about secularism and confessionalism.

You guys turned this into a personal attack, I still don’t understand why…

    Berger,
You criticized the Patriarch not for what he said but because he talked politics. I explained to you why for Maronites, the status of the patriarch is particular.
So you came to inform us that you have changed your religion because you don’t want to be “part of any “flock”, because I am not a sheep waiting to be “flocked”. That means either you have never been a christian, and you can’t be but muslim, so you understand that we can’t accept your insult of our faith, either you have been an ignorant christian who don’t even know the significance of the symbol of the sheep. In that case, don’t be surprised by our contempt of your ignorance which make you a real sheep, following the wrong flock, niether by my counsel to get up to mar Cherbel to recite the Holy Rosary…

  • 59. burger | June 13th, 2009 at 2:12 am

    Maximus,

I only talked about my personal religious side of things to counter a few personal attacks. It has nothing to do with the discussion.

I was simply arguing that the Patriarch shouldn’t talk politics in public and take sides, because it causes tensions and problems for everyone. Now you are talking about my religion, trying to guess if I’m muslim or an ignorant christian or if I’m following the “wrong flock :P ”. And then you are also saying that I insulted your faith, which I never did… If it sounded that way, I apologize.

Btw, you sound like a priest :P

    N10452

Say what you want abou the Patrirach, plain facts are showing that he is driving people away from the church, especially after his last speech against M8 !! You know it N10452 , I know you do !!

The best FPM can do now is to ignore him and dont even bother responding back to whatever he says. He already lost ground (big ground trust me) and will be losing more support bcuz simply Lebanese Christians support secularism against sectariasm ! This is a fact and a study, and you cant change it no matter what you say , do or beleive…. Face it !

FPM have nothing to gain by publicy opposing the batrak but alot to lose if they keep on attacking him. I am going to ask all of them to start doing what you guys do: GIVE THE BATRAK A LIP SERVICE AND GO THE OTHER WAY AROUND..

And time will take care of the rest..

Thank you N and plz do not respond back ! lets close this sensetive topic..

PS: I did not insult the batrak but truth really hurts..

  • 64. Doc1559 | June 13th, 2009 at 7:43 am

  • 69. Doc1559 | June 13th, 2009 at 8:19 am

    Rima

Chu khass hey bi hey ?? Please do not change the subject. I beleive in freedom of relegion, and oppose what the wahabi chariaa are doing to people now days. I (the shiaa and thx for your words) will never kill for the sake of killing.

Bass yalla lemme answer so I am not running away from you , and trust me you don’t wanna go this way (ask PATRICK ;) )

Islam stands for total freedom of religion and expression. Let me
here quote the relevant verses from the quran on the subject eventhough I dont wanna go this way , here:
    a. Let there be no compulsion in religion: truth stands out clear
    from error (02 : 256).
    b. To you be your way and to be mine (109 : 06).
    c. Say, “The Truth is from your Lord.” Let him who will believe,
and let him who will reject (it) (18 : 29).
    d. Say to those who do not believe: “Do whatever ye can: we shall
    do our part” (11 : 121).
    e. He that receives guidance benefits his own soul: but he that
strays injures his own soul. Nor art thou set a custodian over
    them (39 : 41).
    f. If then they turn away, We have not sent thee as a guard over
them. Thy duty is but to convey the message (42 : 48).
    g. Invite (all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful
preaching ; and argue with them in ways that are best and most
    gracious (16 : 125).
    h. Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you. But do not
transgress limits ; for Allah loveth not transgressors (02 :190).

The above mentioned verses clearly indicate the position of Islam
as a religion vis-a-vis other religions.

    Thank you rima..

  • 70. Michele | June 13th, 2009 at 8:23 am

Is that why ya Alloush u get the penalty of death if one decide to reject Islam n convert to another religion?

If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers … thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die. Deuteronomy 13:5-10..

  • 80. 13october1990 | June 13th, 2009 at 10:28 am

Since we are living in a country were religion shapes politics, then religious figure has the right to talk. Isn’t Hassan Nasralleh considered a religious figure more than a politician? Then why does he have the right not only to give his opinion but to have an armed party, decide when Lebanon goes to war, direct people to political agendas and judge politicians.

I’m against all religious interference in politics, but until then the batrak has the right to talk and give his opinion. I did not see Aoun or anyone complain when the Batrak said in 2000 that Syria should leave Lebanon, wasn’t that interference in politics?

    Doc1559,

It’s good that you know your religion. But you also know that radical Islam has nothing to do with the Islam religion. Islam is much deeper than how AL Qa3ida, the salafis and Iran show it. It’s a shame that America manged to change the true meaning of Islam and the extremists have helped them. I wish you would go read some of Imam Moussa El Sader speeches, did you ever ask yourself why he was kidnapped.

Maybe you should go read the Iranian constitution that is based on Islam and see how much of that constitution is implemented. Youtube is a free service go check what is happening in Iran and Saudi, how people are being treated.

When writing versus from the Holy Bible please do not change them, that is disrespect. Christianity evolves, and these actions were practiced in the middle ages not in the 21st century. Please if you have proof of a Christian that converted to Islam and was killed, i would appreciate that.

So guys stop talking about religion, after all we all worship the same GOD. Religion and politics is a bad formula.

In Syria 99.9% voted for Bashar El Assad, do you really think that this is a true figure? In the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic during the 1990 elections the communist party got 86% of the votes after the fall of the Soviet Union the communist party got 12.5% of the votes.

You say 92% voted HA, do you think it has something to do with the services HA are presenting and the fear of being persecuted. What about Ahmad EL Asaad? did you see the attacks on him and the threats to his campaigners. What about Bassem El Sabe3? When you install fear in people they will vote your way. By the way out of the Lebanese Shiaa population only 50% voted. Are the other 50% pro HA.

Doc1559 i don’t want you to think i’m attacking you. I fully respect other opinions, but it would be better to be pragmatic if you really care about the future of Lebanon.

Your 63 is an outstanding reply , very logical and straight to the point. Rima and Michele didn’t know what to say so they responded back by at**tacking your religion(#65&79) and you failed into their trap. Why did you do that, doc? Why did you go their way ?

Doc, do not let them drag you to the wrong place. You hamm**ered them on the head, do not ruin it by going the other way around it. They want to attac**k their faith so they can show that you’re a rad**ical, when you’re not.

They are ch–eap ! This has been their style for ever.

Hello and welcome to the blog,

First of all, thank you for not insulting me; this is something unusual on this blog. Most people (most not all) here don’t believe in dialogue or discussion and the minute you disagree with them DEGHRE MIN DUN MAZEH they will call you R-at, coc–kroach, ter–ror**, mor–on and…
The question you have raised about the punishment of apostasy in Islam, like any other question related to Islam, needs to be answered in the light of the Qur`an and the authentic ahadith (reliable hadith not the wahabi human made hadith).
Most of the negative imaging of Islam is done by the wahabi salafi regime, a relatively small minority of Christians and Jews and those writers and reporters who are under their power. These people are not going to simply stop if we rejected the death penalty for apostasy. They will just find something else to paint Islam negatively. The only way they can stop is if the challenge of Islam is removed and Muslims start behaving like them.

Also, I did not change nor reversed any biblical verses in my comment # 75. The bible if full of questionable verses that drove a lot of Christians away from the church, something very similar to what we call fake hadith, where some Muslims left Islam because of it. I advise you to go and read what the bible says about amputation, stoning, torture, war (i.e. Blessed be the LORD my strength which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight: Psalm 144:1).. I am not going to take this any further so I am not offending some people around here. It is Time for us to put religion on the side already.. I hope we can do that someday.

As for those 50% of the shiaa (per you) who didn’t vote HA and amal. Well, let me tell you something, my whole family didn’t vote and are fed up with both side M8 and M14. But at the same time, we would like to support and only support (not vote) HA and amal than to give our votes to M14. So only those who voted Assaad family are accutually against HA and amal. Those 50% may not like what HA and amal are doing on the ground, but with no doubt about it, they will not go down to the poll and vote them out. Ya3ne they rather vote white paper than to vote the opponents in. Those 50% may disagree with HA and amal but are not against HA and Amal, You may disagree with what geagea is doing to the ouwet now days but you’re not against geagea, do you get my point? The Shiaa Street is a big street and there is no possible way to unite all of it under HA. Fear is neither a factor for me nor my family, we can disagree with the hizeb and amal all we want and nothing will happen to us. Please don’t believe what you see on TV and hear on the radio, remember even during the event of may 7 , Ha didn’t kill just to kill and all 500 FM captured fighters were returned safely to their families, only 10 died fighting … zo3ran do exist and za3ranet can happens anytime, bass mish bi kell tayfe bi zo3ran w fi ma–neyik?? hayed mish chaghlitna 2inu ndob al zo3ran, hayed chaghlit al police wel gesh.. Nassrallah can only control his guys so is berry but what about the rest of the zo3ran who don’t belong to HA nor Amal ?

At last, we (the shiaa) believe in ‘’ al ta3yuch al isslami al massi7i sarwa yajeb al tammasuk biha, imam mussa al sader) and will remain that way. But does the other side believe in ta3yuch isslami massi7i sarwa yajeb al tammasuk biha ?? This is the problem we have in Lebanon.

    Thank you…
