On Wednesday, General Wafiq Jizzini, head of general security directorate, which handles censorship, told AFP he had decided to ban the film after Shiite officials expressed concern that its content was offensive to Muslims and to Iran.

“The office that handles censorship matters informed me in their report that the film attacks Islam and the Iranian regime, and this could spark tension with Iran,” Jizzini said.

The decision was massively critisized by many parties, among them Walid Jumblatt’s psp, Culture minister Tarek Mitri and Bassam Eid production manager with Circuit Empire, who blasted the ban as ridiculous and unwarranted, especially since pirated copies were widely available in Hizbullah’s stronghold in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

I join other fellow bloggers in condeming this banning, specifically BeirutSpring who decided to put the film for all to watch for free until the movie was unbanned.

As a result of the large critics,
Lebanese authorities on Thursday legalized the screening of the prize-winning animated film “Persepolis”, following an outcry and accusations that the banning it by the censors was aimed at pleasing Iran and Shiite clerics.

We have given the green light for the film ‘Persepolis” to be screened in cinemas across Lebanon,” an official from the censorship bureau, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Agence France Presse. She did not elaborate on the remark.

    Finally!

When will we get out of this regressive way of life and be free?

Freedom of speech in Lebanon is like “7eber 3ala wara2″.

Paul: who’s leader doesn’t have balls, signed an agreement with leader of the balls.

Both Aoun and Nasrallah have the eternal fear of planes, for the first it makes him love french coffee and for the the second he starts to love the smell of rats.

Good news to hear that they’ve changed the earlier decision, which represents a victory over some ignorant minds, as well as a victory over the Iranian – Hezbollah attempts to turn Lebanon into another Islamic Revolution country, of course the “Khumainy” type.

And as usual, the Aounists have nothing to say here, i wonder for how long they will keep on following the wreong track of Michel Aoun and his allies, on top of them them HA.

  • 13. Bachir 7ay Fina | March 29th, 2008 at 8:46 pm

N !????? HAve you heard of the movie “Zeitgeist” that is being launched in october in the USA ?

I want an honest answer ….

Will you accept this movie to be lanched in LEbanon ? Answer honestly please…

  • 15. paul | March 29th, 2008 at 11:39 pm

The comparison between zeitgeist and persepolise is absurd . persepolise is not obout the islam it is about the Iranian revolution.

by the way i will be the first who will watch zeitgeis, there are always new theories about christianity ,sometimes interesting, but remained only theories, until now, only the bibel had right.

    Arze,
If it was up to me, i would accept all movies to be launched in Lebanon .. i believe freedom of expression is sacred and should not be bound by anything …

I hate the fact that religious matters are taken so seriously here … if it wasnt illegal and could have got me into prison, i would have posted the prophet’s cartoons myself ..

We talk about democracy and respecting one another, yet we cant even handle a movie that disagrees with our beliefs ..

Yes i would allow it even if i havent heard of it .. Now back to ur movie, i ve read a bit about it and i actually think its interesting .. and am gonna definitly watch it wheher its allowed or not :-)

    Hope i answered you.
