Gemmayze residents organized a small demonstration few days ago and blocked the main road protesting against the noisy night clubs that are keeping them from sleeping.

As a result, the ministry of tourism met with few concerned people and decided to close 20 pubs and restaurants which were judged inadequatly positioned and causing uncomfort ..

I think they are right, this used to happen in Monot street before. The street should be made for pedestrians only (at least on weekends) and nightclubs and pubs must install a proper soundproof system.

وزارة السياحة قررت إقفال 20 مقهى وحانة في الجميزة لا تراعي راحة السكان

I say let them go down and have a drink and they ll forget about all the noise :-)

    wow
    some common sense
great to hear politicians caring about the citizens opinions and not the pub owners
this should spread all over the country:
    RESPECT OTHER PEOPLE
    LET THEM SLEEP

I think this shows how poorly Lebanon is built.

I don’t know who that genius was that decided that nightclubs and residential houses make a good mix.

This shouldn’t have happened in the first place; now a bunch of clubs have to shut down because of poor planning.

  • 3. KL | April 1st, 2008 at 7:16 am

    Mikel

The safety of the residents must come first. Therefore, it is time for the government to monitor the activities of local clubs and take appropriate action whenever complaints are made ! So what if a bunch of clubs have to shut down????? FI ness bada tnem w fi atffel 3inda maderris!!

Btw, you are always critizing lebanon while comparing it to America. Give us a break allah ykahlik. Lebanon was not poorly built ya istez , the lebanese people have been poorly treated.

    @KL,
The question is how come the government allowed these pubs to open in the first place?

My cynical bet is that only those pubs who didn’t pay the right guy the right amount were forced down, just like what happened in Monot and Downtown earlier on.

Likewise, i wouldn’t be surprised if they are allowed to open later on (when every ‘misunderstanding’ is smoothed out) without being one decibel more silent.

If the government truly cared for its citizens, they would proactively require all pubs that are located smack in the middle of a residential area to be sound proof, and not only act when citizens complain.

I think that soundproofing should be a part of the conditions that must be met before giving license to opening any night club or pub.

  • 6. Ziyad | April 1st, 2008 at 10:35 am

The issue is not about soundproof pubs, in a way most of them are. The noise comes from people in their cars listening to loud music and using their zamamir. Put 4 cops in the street(or rather get those who are there to work) and put a fine to anyone making noise. And leave our clubs and pubs alone…

  • 7. Arze | April 1st, 2008 at 11:27 am

I agree with Ziad ! its the people who are noisy not the pubs ! ya3ne hayda yalli na2son hal chabeb more closing ….

and half gemayze is ajar adim ! wou elon ein yine2o ? The government should organise parkings , sound proof glasses , police preventing to shout and scream and horn in the middle of the night ! not close 20 stores !

  • 8. soha | April 1st, 2008 at 1:06 pm

a lot of places have zoning issues and battles between residents and businesses, it’s not just a lebanese issue, or special for lebanon

  • 9. kezballah | April 1st, 2008 at 3:28 pm

Ziyad and Arze, Maybe you live outside the city in a quiet neighborhood, in the mountain? If you say the pubs are fine then maybe you don’t know how bad noise can be. You have to go sleep in Gemayze for a week to know but can you imagine a compresseur working over your bed when you want to sleep? Constant noise every 1 second from the Music at high Bass, Thump Thump Thump all night??

I can’t believe you said elon ein yine2o because they have ajar adim! Gemayze is a poor neighborhood most people have nothing and now they can’t sleep too! I’m afraid the pubs will not close this is only publicity and someone will pay money to reopen them.

  • 10. Ziyad | April 1st, 2008 at 5:08 pm

kezballah…plse don’t put in the same basket than arze…

I have slept more than once in houses in gemayze and I fully agree that there is a problem with the noise…what I was saying was that the noise doesn’t come from the pubs and clubs themselves but from the noise made in the streets surrounding it mainly by cars with loud music open windows and 7ayawenet making love to their zammour….this is what the bulk of the problem and this is what it was in monot. So the idea is just to put some nice fines to the people deliberately making noise in the streets and you will solve most of the prob…

Another way to solve the prob is of course cleaning DT beyrouth from its Iranian carnaval which will bring back part of the night action to where it should be…

I don’t think the residents of those areas should tolerate the noise or garbage of the pubs.
I say close them all, no one should tolerate them.

N i did not get when u said,a few drinks and they will get over it? iza fi 3elam ya istez 7a22a frangein mish mi3neta kil el 3elam heik. when it comes to someones peace and to someones children i think this dead conciense that u r talking about will not exist.
As for the pubs that were closed,i think before that Joe Sarkis make such a decision,he should have made some regulations in his ministry about this issue before giving any license to the pubs, especially since they know that this JIMMAYZI street is crowded with buildings with people inside.

  • 13. Arze | April 1st, 2008 at 9:35 pm

    Kezballah

Im from gemayze , and i lived there : )

My grand mother live there , and she was never bothered…Always said her famous quote: “Chabeb wou badon yi3icho wou yenbesto ” the people who work in the same building, always ask about her….in other words yes i know the area :)

Zyad ? Go F**K your self

  • 14. kezballah | April 2nd, 2008 at 1:14 am

Ziyad, I did not mean to be attacking toward you or Arze, I understand you also talked only about the noise source so my answer to you was only the first part. I understand your point but you know the fines are not enough specially in Lebanon, cleaning DT and kicking out the pubs is much better ;-)

Guys, if you live in the same building or near the pub you hear and you feel all the BASS at least (in Gemayze all buildings are close also). You can not make the pub 100% sound proof and every time the door opens you hear the music. I agree with you the noise from the street is also terrible but you can not control it, if you stop the zammour with the fines you still have the engine noise and if you make it pedestrian only you still have too many people (many people drunk!) talking loud and laughing and screaming ETC. Believe me it is LOUD.

This is why I ask to remove the pubs, for me it is the only solution that works 100%
