Shame on you. This is your responsibility, and you could only blame your self for this.
During the intifada, Israelis never stopped to go to cafיs restaurants, cinemas and theaters, or ride the buses.
The desertion of downtown is a sign of weakness and decay of the Lebanese spirit. Where is the famous Lebanon in which the party never stops, peace time or war time?
disappointing.!

Amir
There are many reasons why people aren’t going there anymore, but none of them is dying spirit.
It’s probably because most people are suffering economicaly.
3. Tarek | April 10th, 2008 at 2:28 am
Well Mickel, I used to go to downtown and never spend a nickel. Amir, you did not have tents occupying your downtown did you? Nevertheless we have ourselves to blame, it’s our job to free our country not other people or other countries’ job ….
4. Michele | April 10th, 2008 at 7:39 am
It’s terribly sad, whenever i pass by, it breaks my heart.
I understand that Hezbollah n Amal would do that but how could the Aounists accept it??????
When it 1st started, i asked one of GMA’s daughter (who happened to be a friend of mine) how she could accept that?
Her answer was: “don’t worry, in 1 week, the goverment will resign and we will all leave”.
How naive of her to think that!!!!!
I’m seeing her this weekend and planning to ask her again the same question…
5. Riemer Brouwer | April 10th, 2008 at 10:19 am
And the strangest thing is that nothing actually has happened in Downtown that would warrant staying away. In other words, it’s perfectly safe to go there…and yet people are afraid.
Imagine what would happen if starting tomorrow, people would ignore the tents and simply have a good time in Downtown.
6. Rodge | April 10th, 2008 at 10:49 am
it’s shameful to see the 8th of March people careless about that situation, with an idea in their heads that this is Hariri’s town, while they seem to forget that people from all sects and parties were working their and earning money before many institutions were forced to close.
In fact, instead of “Down Town”, we should call it now “the Town is Down”.

All they need is a small grenade that tears a few scumbag into peices …
8. Johnny.B | April 10th, 2008 at 11:16 am
I’ve heard that one tent has been set up with state of the art espionage equipment to monitor all movements and talks that happen in the government … and others have been equiped with arms and wepaons …
sometimes my non-lebanese friends ask me who are they I feel so ashaed to say that some of them are christians … Hezballah have there excuse, there standards of living are like that, rat-holes and tents .. but what about the others ?
9. Rodge | April 10th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Out of the subject,
Zuhair Saddik (the royal witness for the Tribunal)has showed up again.
He called Kuwaiti “Asseyassah” newspaper and said he is ok and THAT he’s hiding somewhere safe.
Good to know that.

The occupation DT has very big symbolic behind it….The message is that the Shia community which was historically kept out of town know “owns” the center of beirut. It is a colonial policy and the occupation is a military one given the arsenal that is down there and the fact that the indibat is the one in charge of keeping order and the lebanese authorities are forbidden from getting into this Iranian colony.
Aside from the community power issue the occupation DT has also a cultural side, it is designed to destroy a symbol of Lebanon’s modernity be it economical or social. Hizbis don’t need to be creative they just imitiate what their idols have done in Teheran 30 yrs ago. Use some kind of popular refusal of capitalism to impose their conservative way of life.
The fact that some christians are there doesn’t change anything to the symbolic and to the programm behind this occupation. They are only plain idiots nothing more to add, Politics is for adults and they are not, let them stick to shouting taratatatata and wear orange clothes(I think these 2 things alone show that FPM is nothing more than a big sect following a madman).
Sadly I think that these tents will stay for ever and that some illegal constructions will take place there…this is the plan…and unless we got to war this is what will happen…
Concerning why the Lebanese spirit failed in maintaining life in DT, there is of course economical reasons but more importantly is the fact that life in DT wasn’t fully implemented yet. Going DT is something the lebanese got used not to do for 25 yrs due to the war and life was only getting back there day after day. The Lebanse spirit made it possible that a place that was destroyed and closed for 25 yrs and that symbolized much of the war suffering was able to reborn. Still it couldn’t resist to the settlements installed then. Sad but understandable…

Michele, you know one of GMA daughter? Manik hayne bannout …
12. kezballah | April 10th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Ziyad I like your analysis but there is also one thing I can add: Downtown was rebuilt by Hariri Solidere, and the Chi3a are scoring a point on the Sunni with this occupation. Not only on the Sunni of Lebanon, on the Saudi/Kuwait ETC. who were the most visiting downtown in the last years. But I don’t think they will get to build illegal things there.

Agreed kezballah Iranian/Shiia project is a combination of Kerbala complex and hate toward the west and modernity. DT Beyrouth symbolizes both for them, this is why they hate it so much and want to destroy it…and unless there is some changes in Iranian regime(at least Khatami taking over from ahmdinejad) then they WILL stay. Their plan is big…it includes Koweit/Bahrein/KSA and all the oil fields…the khaligis know this and that’s the reason why some stand so though with(qatar) or against them…

22. Amir in Tel Aviv | April 10th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
Mickel, Tarek,
Lousy excuses you have. OK, the tents. So f**king what ? OK the economy. When did the economy prevented from Lebanese to party? was the economy better during the civil war?
You are lazy people, preferring to mingle in you upper class snobby Pompous overblown and grandiloquent Christian neighborhoods, and to abandon downtown.
No excuse.!
.
23. Rodge | April 10th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Amir,
I think you have exceeded all ur limits in talking here, and I prefer you should stop and keep ur respect to Lebanon and the Lebanese.
For your Information, we gave and still lessons to the whole world of how to live and how to overcome all bad situations.
You Israelis made lots of scenes because of some missiles going down in some areas, and you lived in basements and made panic, so I think u’re the last one to talk in this regard.
We Lebanse don’t need and don’t allow anyone to teach us how to live and how to survive, especially from you Israelis, you represent a part of our miseries.
I respect all people, and I don’t have anything towards Israelis, but when it comes to describing us of being lazy etc… I can’t let you and I ask you on behalf of all to shut up and respect urself and the others, and don’t try to interfer in our proper affairs.
24. Chad | April 10th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
This is another Syrian strategy. Negotiate using passive-aggressive means and never give up until the other side does. Negotiation is like a tennis game, but instead they decide not to play, prevent others from playing, and prevent a game from taking place. The worst is that Aoun is implementing the Syrian strategy. On a side note, he is starting to look like Hafez El Assaad (although not as smart as he was when it comes to his own people). Check out his latest pic, is that Aoun or Assaad? http://yalibnan.com/site/archives/2008/04/major_cracks_th.php

Amir you have never been to Lebanon to know what our areas are like, Christian areas have always been party spots with downtown or without it, and i dont like to refer to Lebanon and divide it by saying “Christian areas, muslim areas, druze areas” Lebanon is for all Lebanese regardless of religion. You go out and party because your army has full control and heavy weapons to protect you what do we have?? NO money, No electricity, No President, no work so please dont go comparing and talking about Christians in this way
i guess those drills are really starting to get to you man.

Amir
My message to you ,
I would like to remind you of something , which I beleive you are familiar with, the Nazis looked down on you as UNTERMENSHEN( German for under man), and you are looking down on us as ” Arabs”. And at this point , you are not any better than the Nazis. Anyway, who the hell you think you are to address all of us in here as LAZY people? What makes you better than us ? Oh, I see , you are Jewish !!!!!! Right, sir?
You cant deny this; you think you’re better than us and this is why you wrote the above statement , which is full of hatred. You guys are not copy of each others , but the most of you are like MATAN VILANI, will choose to cary out their threatened ”greater holocaust” against our people.
At last, you are still as blind as you are brutal despite the passage of 60 years, and hey b4 talking about the tent city , why dont you give us a lesson on gaza strip? Why dont you give us a lesson about your fuck@# economy as well? Why dont you tell us about all the money COUPONS that you receive from the American gov so you can survive ?!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shame on you .

35. Amir in Tel Aviv | April 12th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
Ali1559,
I did not have any intention to insult or to patronize. I read this blog because I do care about Christians in Lebanon, and in fact am worried about them. The criticism isn’t intending to slander insult or patronize.

Hey,all of you. Don’t take Amir’s comments the wrong way. He was tactless it’s true. A common Israeli failing, but his comments did not deserve such heated reactions. He probably WANTS TO SEE YOU ALL HAVING A GOOD TIME IN DOWN TOWN BEIRUT, Didn’t you get it?
