And what’s funny about this picture?
Are we laughing at people’s cultural identities now?
2. N10452 | October 27th, 2007 at 3:30 pm
What has culture to do with this picture …
I d laugh if it was a group of besancon nuns graduating as well ..
The picture is funny, dont make a big deal out of it ..
3. Maroun | October 27th, 2007 at 3:34 pm
There is nothing funny about veiled women graduating unless you think their veils are funny.
4. laylaki | October 27th, 2007 at 3:59 pm
say cheeeeeeeeese !
5. N10452 | October 27th, 2007 at 4:04 pm
It is funny to me …
6. Silvana | October 27th, 2007 at 4:50 pm
Actually the combination of the green gradution robes (especially the ones with the hoods on) and the burkas is funny!!
I really don’t care if they are veiled women, nuns or monks, when you look at the picture you cannot help but laugh. Then again I do have a juvenile sense of humour.

* Graduation
8. Tareq | October 27th, 2007 at 5:39 pm
Maroun, I think the picture is funny because it looks weird but I think the veils are not funny at all…I think they oppress women and they are unacceptable for human society…we cannot be one society in the world if the woman wear veils.

It’s like Christmas ( white + red ),
but in black and green.
.
11. FoX | October 27th, 2007 at 8:03 pm
Amir
it has nothing similar to Christmas, not even 1% similarity
There’s one funnier, in worldcup 2006 in Germany
2 saudi women fans were wearing all green dresses only their eyes were shown and half of their noses and cheeks painted in white and green
12. mikel | October 27th, 2007 at 8:57 pm
If hezbollah takes over, this is how girls would be forced to graduate in NDU and USJ..

On balance,not funny.
18. Ibrahim | October 27th, 2007 at 11:38 pm
Dear all,
Kindly accept the following lines with a good sense.
Please don’t lie to yourself
You would never laugh if the women were nuns.
You respect Mary (peace be upon her) when she is veiled but you don’t like he image of a veiled Muslim woman.
You neither respect nor accept ”the other” To be more specific ‘Muslims’ and this is why you laugh.
You accept it when it suits you only.
You don’t want to think or hear about the Islamic argument
Be sincere with yourself.
Kindly note: I have had many experiences with Christians in Lebanon and this applies to them only and not to Christians in Europe.
Best, Ibrahim
19. 3im | October 27th, 2007 at 11:56 pm
dear ibrahim
u don’t understand and many others that we’re not laughing at the religion
you all hav to try to be open minded with no offense
we all hav the right to give our opinion, without hearting others , and here i don’t think we offended anybody
20. Tareq | October 28th, 2007 at 1:40 am
Ibrahim, there is no reason for us to be not sincere on the web…I can say anything I feel and what I think exactly nobody knows who I am…so I am not lying to you.
I don’t laugh at Moslem Women or Moslem Men because they are Moslem…If a Christian Nun wear something funny I will laugh too (personally) but the Nun don’t look like Ninja they only cover the hair, also many Moslem women cover the hair only I don’t laugh at them…But this picture you have all the Tshador and plus the graduation hat it looks funny to me…And I think the Tshador oppress women because they are not a person in society anymore.
About Islamic Argument I accept “the other” if he accept me…not the argument about Koufar and Jihad etc…You are correct many Christians in Lebanon are closed minded but also in Europe and also many Moslems are closed minded.
I hope I don’t offend you I am saying what I feel like you asked.
21. ghassan K | October 28th, 2007 at 4:39 am
Ya N10452,
Do you think this is the most important issue to Lebanon and its independence?
Also, this could construed (interpreted) as making fun of Muslim dress.
If I am you, I will stay away from questionable issues at this very critical time that Lebanon is going through!
God Bless Lebanon!
22. len | October 28th, 2007 at 4:41 am
This is what we get if hizeballah take over lebanon !
23. paul | October 28th, 2007 at 9:22 am
Unfortunately, speaking about taboo is dangerous in the Arab world.
Conclution:Be afraid.
24. N10452 | October 28th, 2007 at 9:24 am
No wonder this turned into another Pro Anti_Islam post …
Ibrahim,
I do respect Islam, i do respect Muslims and i RESPECT Freedom of speech & expression …
I will ask you a very simple question to show you that it is you who is thinking religious wise and not me … did u see me mentioned islam or muslims anywhere in my post ??? how did u know they were muslims ?? they could be yazadiyye for all i know or some unheard of sect ?? yet u assume its an Anti-Islam post ..
I will not go further with that thread, but keep in mind that it is you who is uncapable of accepting the other, who finds it offensive and insulting when someone barely mentions the Islam word …
I cant but remember the Danish cartoons and the reaction to it … so sad ..
Ghassan K, it is a funny picture and i will post it if i felt i want to … And in a way yes it is very important to see how people will react to it ..
25. Tarek | October 28th, 2007 at 9:52 am
How do they know each other!?
26. paul | October 28th, 2007 at 10:05 am

27. N10452 | October 28th, 2007 at 10:11 am

30. Mohammad | October 28th, 2007 at 3:13 pm
Arabs are the MASTERS in mixing things together and the PROFESSIONALS in DIRECT REACTIONS!
Dear Ibrahim,
It is nice to see a person who defends his religion, however, you are not defending ISLAM with these words! WHO THE HELL TOLD YOU THAT THIS UNIFORM IS A MUSLIM UNIFORM??? IT is a TRADITIONAL (once again, TRADITIONAL, once again TRADITIONAL UNIFORM)!!!!! It is a tradition in Yemen, in KSA…… Unfortunatly, this tradition is taking place in muslim countries and so it OVERTAKES religion and becomes as a sign of RELIGION.
It is not your fault Ibrahim, its a society fault.
Now, do we have the right to make fun of others traditions? I think NO because we should respect others the same way we want others to respect us (suppose a European is making fun of our Lebanese Uniform “Sherwal” and saying that it is full of shit” )
Keep in mind, what I meant in the word “FUN” is when you humilate others and not use it as a JOKE. For example, when I saw this picture, I remembered the famous film “SCREAM” or “SCARY MOVIE” maybe I will laught, taking it as a joke but not HUMILATE who is wearing it because they are FREE to wear whatever they want.
Thanks and take it easy
31. Johnny.B | October 28th, 2007 at 5:04 pm
HAHAHHAHAH this is funny :D:D:D:D:D

32. hania | October 28th, 2007 at 7:10 pm
as a muslim i do say that when i saw the pic i did sarcasticly laugh… but tareq i dont think wut u said abt weiled women shld be said..i am not very religious but i do think that every1 shld be respected!!
33. Tareq | October 28th, 2007 at 10:03 pm
Hania when did not I respect women?…I am against the veil because I respect women…I think the veil is from the man who force the women to hide and not be normal part of society…Please explain better why you feel not respected from my opinion.
34. SONIA | October 28th, 2007 at 10:31 pm
Tareq,in my opinion, you have got it right.
Talking about funny, I saw an Israeli movie tonight and a lot of it was in Arabic. If it ever gets to Beirut go and see it. “Visit of the band” is it’s name, and is really funny. About a bunch of Egyptian musicians who land up in a dreary Israeli town through some error or mismanagement. Now,that is really funny. Perhaps the movie will land up in Beirut through a similar mess up. ha ha ha!
35. Charbel Geagea | October 29th, 2007 at 12:44 am
No offense Maroun, but you are a FunKiller buddy…. Enno where’s the big deal in posting this pic and why are u so deffensive of the Yemeni grad outfit. I’ve seen people graduate in muslim countries and they don’t look the same to me….. so this is not an insult to any muslim or muslim tradition. My G/F is muslim and believer and she laughed her head out when she saw it.
36. Tareq | October 29th, 2007 at 1:27 am
Sonia, I think we have to get it from DVD because we have a censor like Syria and Iran!!
They put a veil on us too so we can’t see
37. Ibrahim | October 29th, 2007 at 3:27 am
Many of the stated arguments make sense.
The Islamohobia is filling the whole media and I frankly thought about it as part of that campaign which is filled with hatred and animosity.. I also had many unfortunate incidents in Lebanon that showed a great deal of sectarian feelings…
Anyway thank you for your replies.
May be we can meet someday in Lebanon though I am a bit far away these days. As for accepting the other, you can try me but of course with respect.
38. Tarek | October 29th, 2007 at 2:57 pm
Well this whole veil thing is not related to Islam, it is a tradition. I personally always make fun of people who put veil. I totally admit that every body have the right to wear or believe in anything he wants, but I also have the right to make fun and laugh about everything I see. Cheers.
39. SONIA | October 29th, 2007 at 6:05 pm
Tareq, yes of course I know that the movie will not be shown in any Arab country. It was only my feeble attempt to make a joke. The Egyptian police band was portrayed in a most sympathetic manner and the movie would have been Israels nomination for an Oscar in the foreign film category, but was rejected for not using enough of the Hebrew language. It is a sweet movie and a relief from all the tragedy and violence we experience all around us.
Being entertained and enjoying life is also a political protest,in a kind of way.
Love life!
40. dory | October 31st, 2007 at 11:51 pm
see the bright side of it. Those women are officially literate and have a degree. In some cities in the US women are still illiterate and think that Iraq is a state within the US and that Israel is a muslim country!!!!
