Question asked in a previous post tackling the UN bombing in the South by Cromwell.
Who can attack the UN in the South and for what purpose ? indeed a very good question.
The South is mainly inhabited by Shiites and Christians and is characterized by the presence of large Palestinian camps, mainly the Ain el 7elwe camp which inhabits hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees and is the perfect hideout for extremist groups.
Hezbollah has taken control of the security in the South for years now, mainly after Sobhi el Tufeily was put aside and replaced by Hassan Nasrallah. Palestinians were not allowed to operate against Israel and surrounded within their own camps, while Hezbollah was operating freely under Syria’s approval of course.
There was no need for Syrian “assasination squads” to operate in the South in the past years since Hezbollah was there, however things changed since the Syrian withdrawal and the spread of the UNIFIL troops all over the South after the July war.
Hezbollah lost most of its tunnels and military infrastructure and Syrians were still trying to get their feet back in Lebanon. The first step was to weaken the 14th of March team by simply eliminating its main figures physically and the response was the international tribunal, a major achievement for Lebanon and its government and 14M allies.
The second step was to cause tensions and get the army involved, firstly by inciting the 8th of March team to do large demonstrations and in sensitive places, then by calling for civil disobedience and causing chaos and a lot of other separate incidents, and finally the Nahr el Bared incident and tensions within the Palestinian camps.
Finally, the third step after relatively failing in the first ones is to hit on a highly sensitive point, the UN Troops, and indeed things started last week when Katyousha rockets were fired from the South trying to provoke Israel to reply back, and today through a terrorist bombing against a spanish patrol causing 6 casualties.
The only groups that are capable of organizing such operations in the South are terrorist groups linked to Al-Qaeda or simply extremist groups controlled by Syrian intelligence ( mainly Palestinians).
There was an attempt conducted by Syrian intelligence against a Lebanese army responsible (Shehadeh) last year, almost killing him.
Where does Hezbollah’s role reside ?
Hezbollah can only obey orders and cannot allow itself to stop Syrians from operating freely, they cannot afford that, and no wonder they were the first ones to deny any responsability and condemn the act.
Who can attack UN troops then ?
We must ask a different question, who will benefit except Syria from such an incident ?
Then maybe the answer should be obvious.

I could not imagine that Syria could be behind the attack that has killed 6 Spanish servicemen last evening in Lebanon. However, there are some things I do not understand. I do not understand the relation you state between Syria’s interferences in Lebanon and the attacks on UN forces. How can Syria destabilize Lebanon by hitting UN peacekeeping forces?
Greetings from Spain and remember you have a wonderful blog I follow every day.

Have you ever heard of saif al adel and abu mesaab el suri? Have you read what abu mesaab al suri wrote years ago about the new jihad fronts? have you heard the threats zawahiri sent against the UNFIl in Lebanon. It is very easy to throw everything on Syria and also very ignorant.

Ya ziko,
If you are a Syrian citizen, i can perfectly understand what u’ve written, but if u’re a Lebanese Citizen, i find it hard to understand what is the inner thing that told you to defend Syria. I can accept if you defend another Lebanese party, even if i don’t agree, but defending Syria!!!! someone tell me why you always forget about everything and focusd only on defending Syria,
اذا كانوا عم يعطوك اعاشة وقمح وأرز، بلاهن لأنو راح يكونوا فاسدين متلن وراح يضروك
we have all the reasons in the world to accuse and criticize the syrians, so please let us do that and you and your other friends, don’t reply everytime defending them.

Dear Cromwell,
First, welcome to the Middle East!
Second, Syria’s purpose is to show to the west that Lebanon needs a strong Syrian presence to prevent havoc and chaos (remember the civil war in the 1970s and 1980s).
Third, Syria likes to fight Israel using Hizbullah and uses Lebanon as a bargaining chip for its negotiation with Israel and the west.
A good book to read about the Syrian regime is: The Truth About Syria by Barry Rubin.
Michael Totten wrote recently in his blog about the book. Here is the link.

Good luck.

personaly i don’t think it’s HA that did it, I think that syria is aking HA to y7arkech with israel and the UN but HA is refusing, so syria is using the palestinans and other terrorits smuggled through the border to make these attacks in an attempt to make it look like HA is doing it, and who knows maybe the USA is having a deal with syria on the account of HA, ma fi chi mistab3ad ba2a bi hal 3alam, we could analyse and think of millions of reasons and stuff but at the end no matter what we do, its all in the hands of whatever the big countries agree upon, unfortunatly!
9. N10452 | June 25th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
Cromwell,
Thank u for ur kind words firstly … i tried checking ur blog as well but it was all in spanish
Syrias has invaded us for more than 20 years and spread its intelligence all over the country and backed parties such as the SSNP, Hezbollah, Baath etc … and did several assasinations through members of those parties or by their cover ..
Syria was forced to leave Lebanon and that was a slap in the face, and since then it has been trying to get back to Lebanon and the only way to do so is cause chaos and maybe start a new civil war ..
The war against Israel was ignited by the most loyal ally to the Syrians, Hezbollah, yet things were settled when the international community backed the government and spread UN troops on the borders under the UN resolution 1701.
This resolution added to the 1559 and others are directed against Syrians .. and if Syria manages to frighten the UN troops out of Lebanon, and cause more tension among the Lebanese and ask Hezbollah to harass Israel, it will give itself reasons to get back here as “peace-keepin” forces.
Hitting the UN troops is just a slight example of what the Syrians are capable of.
I hope i answered ur question.

ziko, lets agree that what you are saying is true. Can you tell us from where those JIHADIS are coming? from where they are importing their weapons? Who is giving them the advanced military systems?
Don’t tell me it is the fish in the Mediterranean Sea are supplying them and don’t tell me it is Israel!
Iraq/Lebanon/ Palestine are suffering from the same SOURCE (BASHAR)

Brother, I would advise you to research further before making such claims, You are assuming like usual and this is not a good sign to discus politics.
You do make sense to me , but you always throw your blames on syria ! I would advise you not to buy into the media propaganda of elevating tension between the lebanese people . In fact, Israel is also beneficial , they are ready to pay any price in order to eliminate HA. At last , noo need to ask such a question like ; who can attack the un forces in south lebanon? (your question) coz answers are hard to find on this one , especially when your illegal government failed to CAPTURE one criminal from before ! We will never capture the criminals cuz simply they are not in lebanon. MA FINA NEKHOD AL MIJIRMIN 3LA AL MA7MAKE LA2INO MA FINA NTALLON ….. tab chu al 7al ya 14th of march?

Brother 1559,
I do know how to do my job thank you and i do research things before posting analysis ..
I am not assuming, there are facts speaking louder than words .. i do not watch any specific news, i read everyone and listen to everyone and start my day by reading syrian and pro-syrian papers ..
First of all, Israel would have benefited from that last summer but now Israel does not want to start another war, and is happy how things are settled in the South .. specially after their military failure last summer …
Second, my LEGAL government cannot operate while its ISF and army are infiltrated by Syrian agents and the presidency and parliament are paralyzed and there is a tent city with armed terrorists planning to take over the serail any moment ..
My government is the target, and even though it is doing mistakes that i am pointing out repeatdly, it cannot operate when its ministers are getting killed ..
Instead of nagging and critisizing, why dont u show some support and cooperate and let HA and his allies deliver the assasination squads they are protecting in their regions .. or maybe Syria will punish them if they do so ..
8th of March has to make up their minds, either Lebanon or Syria … and so far they chose Syria ..

1559,
I just have one question for you. lots of assassinations and explosions and crimes happened at a time when your friends the Syrians were governing the whole Lebanon, and yet no one was captured. So were they the people from outside the country, or the Israeli spies, and if they were Isrelis, why they didn’t capture tem
There is a wrong opinion saying that the security was better when the Syrians were here. Of course it wasn’t, since Riad Taha, Salim Lawze, Kamal Jumblat, Sheikh Bachir, Sheikh Hassan Khaled, Rene Mouawad, Elie Hobeika, Ramzi Irani, Pierre Antonios, Marwan Hamade, and Rafic Hariri, they were all assassinated at that time, Only Hamade managed to stay alive, and no one has discovered any one involved. soooo…. it was Al Qaeda??? it is clearly the Syrian style. Open your eyes please

1559,
….oh and i forgot Rashid Karame and Dany Chamoun and many others.
God created a very beautiful country named Lebanon, but with a very bad neighbors, Syria and Israel.
Allah ma kamela ma3 7ada.

First of all , syrians are not my friends !
second , Im going to answer you question by reading your comment
what about ;
Toni franjiyeh
rachid karame
R.mouawad
and the criminal still operating freely on the lebanese soil , wearing an angel dress , pft!
Sorry ROD you forced me .
16. Rodge | June 26th, 2007 at 9:22 pm
1559,
No problem ya man, but if u think that Rashid karame and Rene mouawas were killed by Dr. Geagea, u’re soooo wrong and blinded.
Everytime a leader tries to change his political side, they shot him dead and they accuse other parties. Now they are complaining about us accusing them, but they did that all the 30 past years, everytime something happened, even they accuse Israel or the LF. WAKE UP
As for Toni Frangieh, it is another issue, and i can assure you that Hakim was not in the north at that time, and the Syrians as usual played their best game.

Many of those jihadist are Lebanese, others are paleestinians who resides in teh camp and many are foreigners, it seems like the majority of them came through Lebanese airport.
It is very easy to throw everything o Syria. By the way, I ma Lebanese more than you think and ready to defend Lebanon with all I can. But it doesn’t mean I have to stick everything to Syria. By doing so, I will be losing Lebanon because I am directing my blame, investigation into one direction.
