if we want to be honest ?unfortunately nothing will save lebanon with exception a total invasion from the west with radical attacks.
3. Ali 1559 | September 22nd, 2007 at 9:40 pm
Federalism : Racism !
The process through which people are integrated into a society by expossure to the action and opinions of theirs is called SOCIALIZATION not federalism ! We need to use our diversity as a win-win weapon by building strong society realtionships (schools, scout, patriotic conferences) , think of it .
How the hell you wanna go federal when 3yn al remene is 1 mn away from chiye7 ? Does this means , I can walk from one county(2iklim) to the other anytime I would like to do so ? Didnt you guys learn anythinig from our past civil war experience? Federalism ya3ne khtout tamess ! Unless this is what you have in your mind ! Do you ?
PS : Federalism will be RSASET AL RA7ME !

Amen paul
Unfortunately we are right in the freakin middle of this hole east west conflict
We need a radical change of our system.
And as the article said, enough with “ta’ef” and “3aych moushtarak” and “wife2 watane” and all that crap, cz i haven’t been seeing any of that lately.
6. Amir in Tel Aviv | September 22nd, 2007 at 9:57 pm
Federalism means, there has to be war before it.
Forget about ‘peaceful’ federalization, Checoslovacian style. It will be bloody and brutal, Yugoslavian style. I cannot see the parties in Lebanon agreeing on it.
7. mikel | September 22nd, 2007 at 10:09 pm
Ali
We have realized, and so should you, that our vision for Lebanon is completely different than yours.
You want to make Lebanon friendly with Iran, we hate Iran.
You want to be friends with with Syria, let’s just say we don’t get along well with the Syrians.
You want to lob missiles on to the “zionists” whenever Khomeini tells you to, we want to make peace with Israel.
You chant “death to America”-yet you live in it-, we love America and its way of life.
How can use our diversity to our advantage ya 3ale, when your buddy 3on is saying ‘Ana aw la a7ad’.
And you’re calling for wilayit l fakih.
Your opinions differ very dramatically from ours, so enough with this ‘w7de wataniyye’ crap cz I’m not seeing much of it lately.
And finally people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones:
You’re the ones with your ’security zones’
You’re the ones with your own army.
You’re the ones with your own social security.
You’re the ones with your own phone services.
So don’t give us that crap about Fedralism is racism.
USA, Canada, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland… all have federal systems, and they’re doing pretty good if you ask me.
8. paul | September 22nd, 2007 at 10:10 pm
i forgot…i live also in a federal state.
9. paul | September 22nd, 2007 at 10:21 pm
Amen mikel
HA have his own state the problem is we have 2 different cultures, and they are lucky if them come to jounieh.and tell me only one reason why I have to go into the da7ieh , i feel ill there, and i think you 2 ali
10. fad14 | September 22nd, 2007 at 11:34 pm
bachir-7ay-fina: you talk as if Muslims of Lebanon have nothing on their mind but to take over the country and rule it and kick christians out.
You speak about muslims as if they landed in this country in some plane in 1920.
You forget we are Lebanese first, and reliigion is practiced once a week MAXimum be it a sunday or a friday or a saturday.
Bashir Gmayel died for 10452 and not for 1/3 of that.
I am sick of seeeing sectarian and racist comments on this blog.
What sickens me most is not what you post but even what you THINK and your mentality.
32 years after 1975 and you still THINK the problem in Lebanon is muslims and christians.
The gulf countries are full of Lebanse christians making more money than local muslims and they have no political rights, no ministers and none of them complain about a thing until they land in beirut Airport.
I am starting to like Aoun and his supporters, at least they are not fucken racist or sectarian or obsessed with who sits on what chair in which funeral, they are stupidly in Love with getting the idiot to presidency regardless of what shit he will do. they have no cause, no principals and no real political agenda appart from getting Jiddo Aoun to becoem president.
BUT AT LEAST THEY ARE UNITED.
11. SONIA | September 23rd, 2007 at 1:48 am
After a few months of reading this blog on a more or less steady basis,I agree with Amir from Tel Aviv. The impression of Lebanon which i have gained is of a violent society in a state of chaos. federalism is the answer, but how to achieve it?
Peace with israel? For now, only a distant dream. Your blog has woken me up to a sad reality.
12. mikel | September 23rd, 2007 at 5:37 am
SONIA
we are not a violent society..
we are peacefull, all we want is to be able to have a secure and prosperous future.
HOWEVER
our future and our existence are at stake, which forces us to use violence sometimes.
Not all the Lebanese are a bunch of violent freaks, who love to kill people and blow themselves up.

Sonia
Is your society any better? We have seen an increase in conflict in recent yrs . Your unresolved conflicts can be very costly if you keep on doing what you’re doing ! Is the Gaza strip an enemy state or not yet????
16. N10452 | September 23rd, 2007 at 8:52 am
How wrong are you ya Ali … Israeli society is at least united against one common ennemy .. it is united when its country is invaded ..it believes in one army ..
Mech bifouto 3layna el souriyyye .. Muslim parties ally with them against Christians ..
Sonia,
Unfortunatelly the ones who should be taking the initiative are divided and with no true leader ( referring to Christians) and that is our biggest problem.

18. SONIA | September 23rd, 2007 at 12:22 pm
Mike…Glad to read your contradiction. after all you are our neighbours.
Ali. We left the Gaza strip with hopes of peace or at least no war. We offered to leave the Israeli Jewish homes and fields and gardens and schools and hothouses and vegetable gardens, all we wanted to hand over. We WANTED the population to flourish and support themselves with dignity and even happiness. Do you understand?
What did we get in return? A barrage of ROCKETS!
Get rid of your hizbullah mentality and let’s see some goodwill from you and your friends.

Israeli commandos seized nuclear material of North Korean origin during a daring raid on a secret military site in Syria before Israel bombed it this month, according to informed sources in Washington and Jerusalem.
The attack was launched with American approval on September 6 after Washington was shown evidence the material was nuclear related, the well-placed sources say.
They confirmed that samples taken from Syria for testing had been identified as North Korean. This raised fears that Syria might have joined North Korea and Iran in seeking to acquire nuclear weapons.

Blast at secret missile site killed dozens
Israeli special forces had been gathering intelligence for several months in Syria, according to Israeli sources. They located the nuclear material at a compound near Dayr az-Zwar in the north.
Evidence that North Korean personnel were at the site is said to have been shared with President George W Bush over the summer. A senior American source said the administration sought proof of nuclear-related activities before giving the attack its blessing.
Diplomats in North Korea and China believe a number of North Koreans were killed in the strike, based on reports reaching Asian governments about conversations between Chinese and North Korean officials.
…I am envious…

Ali
We had all that stuff because there was no state, no government, no nothing.
We had an army because YOU were trying to kill and kick us out!!
We didn’t take orders from anyone, like you.
22. Ali 1559 | September 24th, 2007 at 9:25 am
Mikel
Are you sure inak you didnt take any orders from foreign forces?

Size does matter but remember this is lebanon (third world country) , We need to build our foundations first and then move on to the next level!!!

My hizballah mentality??? Hizballah will hold me hostage for chating with you on this blog !! Ya, beleive it .
Anyway , this is not the right place to discus the israeli conlflict in here ….
But , to achieve peace, the palestinians need national unity , much as the israelis need a consensus for withdrawal . The man who symbolizes the hope for unity among the palestinians is now sitting in jail (marwan barghouti) ! Why is he locked up?
Thank you for your time . Say no for war.
25. Ali 1559 | September 24th, 2007 at 9:47 am
Sonia
Plz do not label me as Hizballah anymore
Thank you .
26. Ali 1559 | September 24th, 2007 at 10:00 am
* conflict .
27. SONIA | September 24th, 2007 at 11:55 am
Ali,at last you are talking sense. Will answer you on the Barghouti question when I have had time to think about it. I remember that once he was considered to be a possible Mandela. No,that is an exaggeration, but certainly he held out some hope for us.
If you do not call me an anti zionist I will not refer to you as having a hizbullah mentality.
Because of the reasons you mention and the threats coming out of Iran and Syria, the Israeli public no longer believes that peace is possible. We cannot be expected to commit national suicide.
Despite our many internal conflicts and imperfections, this is a country where it’s citizens, very, very many of them, belong to organisations trying to better the lives of the unfortunate among us,on a voluntary basis.
And by the way,the cabinet has just voted to allow 500 refugees who entered the country illegally(the majority are muslims but there are Christians among them,to remain in Israel.
(refugees from Darfur)
This might seem irrelevant to you,but why wait for peace to improve our lives and the lives of others. I would be happy to hear about the positive aspects of life in Lebanon. Not only about who is killing whom.
