I was reading one of the comments on a previous post and saw a respectful reader of our blog ask about naturalization and how we are not discussing it ..

Yesterday a small dispute occured btw Hariri & Aoun over the Palestinians. Here is a small resume from Naharnet.

“MP Saad Hariri hit back at accusations by Free Patriotic Movement leader Gen. Michel Aoun that former Premier Rafik Hariri had supported the naturalization of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.
Aoun, in an interview with Iran’s Press TV, backed his claim by presenting a document allegedly signed by Hariri and dating back to the year 2000.

The document charged that Hariri backed a plan to naturalize Palestinian refugees in Lebanon as a choice to be taken in return for calling off Lebanon’s international debts.”

You ask me why i did not mention it ?? I honestly dont think Naturalization is anymore a problem nowadays ..
Dont get me wrong, i am still against it and i know some parties in Lebanon want it to happen, mainly Hariri senior, yet i see it as a detail compared to the problems, or should i say dramatic situation we reached today.

I will ask you few questions and once you answer them, you will realize how lame is the naturalization issue ..

Why did the Christians enlarge Lebanon and include Muslims and force them to live here ??
Why do we blame Muslims for wanting to islamize the country even though they clearly told us they wanted to do so 60 years ago ??
Why are Iraqi Christians fleeing to Lebanon in numbers ?
Why do we want to live with People who dont even acknowledge Lebanon ?
Why would the Christians of Lebanon oppose nowadays division ??
Was refusing Kissinger’s plan a mistake ?

Why should we fight for Lebanon while others just want to weaken us and take over ?
Why do we still believe in Lebanon ??

I do believe in Lebanon but honestly and sincerely i cant convince anyone to stay here or believe in it anymore.

The Martyrs who died for us to stay are what keep me going ..and a blind belief in a dream a certain Bashir Gemayel believed in one day, a dream that is looking more like an illusion fading away one day after the other ..

So as you see my friend, naturalization is a very minor detail.

I am not against or for the naturalization.
But I have some more questions to add:

    1. They have been living here for 60 + years without any rights or proper education.

    2. Armenians have been given the passport and some of them have not even stepped into the country and all they do is speak a different language, learn another history book and believe they will liberate their homeland one day and they are confused between the love of Lebanon or Syria or Armenia.

    3. We have foreign workers from Syria and Egypt and Sirilanka and we might use the unskilled refugees in labor jobs and the not so skilled but smart in the same jobs they are getting elsewhere (Canada, US and Europe and the Gulf). After all they have no where else to send the money and it would circulate locally.

    4. Muslim are already a majority and with the way Hizbulla are breading and the immigration it won’t be long before they hit 90%.

    5. It would surely bring a lot of financial returns and almost cancel all debts (They claim so)

    6. It will bring peace with Israel closer and normalize the relationship and give us better access to the Gulf and maybe close the border with Syria.

    7. The camps won’t harbor terrorists or militant groups anymore.

    8. Hizbulla will have no one to fight for except for Shebaa farms and I am sure Israel would return t then.

I am sure a lot of the people who comment here have more points to add (-ve or +ve) so please add them just for the sake of seeing things from a different perspective.

i would like to remind those who forgot

our great leader the late and beloved Bachir Gemayel was against naturalisation

he used to warn in his close meeting against the “octupus” Hariri and he used to consider him as a great threat

Monseigneur Raii in an interview with “nharkon Saiid” about “Great Friday” criticized the period from 1990 till now which was majorly led by Hariri about as he said and I Quote: “aslamet al idara”

whether this paper shown about indebtment and the palestinians is true or false it must not let us consider the problem of palestenians as a minor one

  • 5. Patriarc Sfeir !!! | January 19th, 2008 at 10:50 pm

we should ask Abi Nasr! he had this argument in his campain.

  • 6. Tarek | January 19th, 2008 at 11:57 pm

Well I am with organizing the presence of the palestinians but not giving them citizenship for something they actually do not believe in the first place …

I agree with N, that the consequence of naturalization are already here! Put naturalization apart, we already have like half of the lebanese do not believe in Lebanon in the first place and are actually fighting to end its marginal existence. I really started to loose the feelings and passion I had for Lebanon. How can you love a country and hate half of the citizens in it ( who hate you back of course) while you see them killing it everyday?!!!!. I want to love Lebanon as I used to do but somehow the feelings are not the same anymore.

  • 7. Landshark | January 20th, 2008 at 12:26 am

Hey fad14, why, whenever an issue about naturalization and so forth(ESPECIALLY naturalization) do you bring up the Armenian issue?????? I mean you people make it so obvious your utter hatred and disregard for Armenians it is shameful and horrifying!!!!!! If you read your history books(obviously your kind has not), the Armenian presence goes back centuries, not sixty years!!!!!! All I have to say is, Armenians have been an asset to Lebanon and if you don’t see it that way, you are free to think what you want.

  • 8. paul | January 20th, 2008 at 12:41 am

every time when we talk about naturalization we hear the same answer:la littawteen w7ak l3awda bla bla bla.Although everyone knows there is no return to israel.
This answer has only exacerbated the problem so the politicians flee from the reality And dont need to break the head about it with this answer they want only to flee from responsibility.

Until when? The camps become more radical. the new generation has no perspective on a good future. We need to force the politicians to found a humane solution.

I think HA is 100x more dagerous.

  • 9. ali | January 20th, 2008 at 4:08 am

you have absolutely no right to state that the muslims of lebanon do not believe in lebanon. what gives you the right, or makes you think you are qualified to make such a statement? if you think you can sum up the attitude and beliefs of 2 million people, painting them all with the same brush, and then speaking for them, then you are a downright racist.

  • 10. N10452 | January 20th, 2008 at 6:32 am

    Ali,
I have no right at all .. i have facts to prove nd support my points .. i have nothing but facts and the biggest proofs is Hezbollah today and is the many many Sunnite fanatic parties today that exist ..

How would they believe in Lebanon if they worked with every possible country to weaken their own fellow country men ( Yes i am talking about Christians here).

How would they believe in Lebanon if they collaborated with an ennemy who was destroyed our country, stealing it and sucking the blood out of it ???

Even if you tell me some people do, i look up at their representatites and the political parties they support .. and i see nothing but traitors .. so either let them oppose their own parties or shut up and accept that fact instead of calling me racist.

Sunnites in 2005 were changed by the explosion that killed Hariri, however there still is something missing ..

  • 11. fad14 | January 20th, 2008 at 7:03 am

Landshark : I have no hatred to Armenians at all. Especially those who live among other “Lebanese” as equal. But every time “The Armenians” give priority to their cause and forget about Lebanon” So they Armenians FIRST and Lebanese MAYBE second, and please tell me bout the benefits of Burj Hammoud !!!

to N: I don’t agree with you on Muslims don’t believe in the existence of Lebanon. Muslim are not PRO Syira or Pro Arab or Pro Islamization on the expense of the country and the people in it. There are a few nutcases here and there and some of them have a good support around them. Just like SSNP and Marada, who believe whatever their leader says just because they get a good salary or leftovers from them at the end of each month.

Sadly in our history, we have a mix of stories and different history books who mix stories in a good way to prove their side was always right.

  • 12. leb voice | January 20th, 2008 at 7:52 am

Tarek, very well put, I myself feel the same…
But that sadly is the consequence of any big revolution. The children that were born during the french revolution felt as lost as we do now.

I’m afraid every are putting all their eggs in the same basket especially when it comes to Muslims and armenians. but sadly nationalism is mostly absent within these group’s ranks.
So i have to say i am with N, but do not mean all the Muslims and armenians therefor i also largely agree with Ali. But sadly ali, such minorities tend to be marginalized in front of the bigger scheme.
As for Marada, SSNP and all other small group that dont and will never put lebanon first, i believe they must be wiped out politically by any means necessary, and must be considered as traitors.

    Danny:

I am not a retard to start with
I am not a Christian as second note
I can trace my ancestors to 1650 and i don’t think any of you on this blog can get closer to or maybe only few.

Armenians are in this country only 40 years or less before Palestinians.

And I say lets treat Palestinians the same way we treated the Armenians.

The Christian Palestinians who have been naturalized have disappeared into the Lebanese community and don’t speak a language of their own or have flags of their own or have Cantons of their own or even give preference to each other in business against the rest of the world.

And I can never separate the issues from each other. both are refugees and both came here with nothing but their clothes.

Why are Armenians (who after 100 years in Lebanon) still call themselves Armenians and not Lebanese should be treated any different while they treat us LEBANESE as second grade Arab citizens while they live in OUR country.

    Who’s the retard now ????

And for the rest of you, please refer to the history books to see how Armenians where double crossing the Christians and how Bashir Gmayel wanted to eliminate them because they were smuggling weapons to Palestinians.

  • 15. Landshark | January 20th, 2008 at 12:06 pm

Danny, I appreciate your thread and honesty. I am Armenian and was born in Lebanon, which I dearly LOVE(visited aftrer many years emigration). I was not trying to be aggressive or offensive towards anybody nor was trying to incite arguement. My problem is how Armenians are so looked down on and actually hated! There were actually Armenian LFers who were martyred for the cause. Armenians to my knowledge should NEVER be compared to Palestinians(unfortunately EVERY time Palesinians are mentioned, guess who is the ideal comparison)? Armenians don’t have militias, Armenians don’t rob banks, Armenians don’t massacre LEBANESE soldiers, Armenians don’t booby trap cars, etc, etc. My point is we should understand each others views and do our best to live besides one another! Again Danny thank your understanding, and I know there is a lot of wonderful people like you out there!
    GOD BLESS OUR LEBANON!

U do sound like a racist…look the word up and u will see. Last time a checked Armenians didn’t try to take over Lebanon. Also u don’t even have the right to say if they r armenians or lebanese 1st. U don’t know only we know. Yes, I am one…and I consider myself Lebanese more than anything. I have more love to Leb than u will ever have. I live in LA and half of the population in this city r armenians from Armenia…u should know there is a huge difference betweeen us and them. So plz I suggest u keep ur judgments and theories to urself. We don’t want any farted peas anymore.

  • 19. fad14 | January 20th, 2008 at 1:45 pm

to landshark and anyone with the same mentality:

you continue to attack me and call me names and i tell you, everyday thank God (in Armenian if you want) that we have given you a place to rest and be grateful everyday you have been given a seat in the parliament and you have been given the right to vote and the right to work and the right to get educated cause this has not been given to many other refugees.

We have been prosecuted and killed in our own country and have never deserted it or runaway and this gives me more rights than you or Palestinians in it.

If you think you are not equal to Palestinians then you are a racist and not me.

U think Armenians are the best thing that happened to Lebanon. I tell you, Lebanon is the best thing that happened to you and your racist, secular nation.

Michael El Murr gave you passports for votes, that is what you are worth, a vote every 4 years.

I am not degrading refugees saying that they came with their clothes only, and not criticizing how they fled, but never think ever that Armenians have given anything extra to Lebanon. They live together, they buy from Armenians only and they trade with Armenians only and they go to Armenian schools only.

We gave you an identity and a country to live in. You have rejected that and still call yourself Armenians.
If you are true Lebanese, you would start to belong and stop defending Armenians, because ARMENIANS can go live in ARMENIA if they want to, just buy a ticket and leave Lebanon to LEBANESE.

This goes to anyone or any nation thinking this is their land.

  • 20. Patriarc Sfeir !!! | January 20th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Armenian are different than palestinian. Armenian are Lebanese and christian. Palestinian are non Lebanese and Muslim.

About the Islam in Lebanon. Shiaa follow Iran and the Sunni follow Arabia. Do the Christian follow the vatican? Look at Aoun.

No Naturalization to other Muslim in Lebanon. After we risk that they change the constitution and the Christian became minority.

Do not forget that the Lebanese War begin with el Akhou el Shar….. of a Palestinian like Arafat and not with an Armenian like Agob…

So if you guys are trying in our head because if DSG make some arrangement with Hariri to accept this argument so forget it.

Armenia ae not ugual Palestinian and the Armenian in Lebanon give so much value and they are hard worker and not terrorist.

Not because they vote again sheick Amin means they hate us. but the Palestinian distroye our land and they continue to do it.

Danny, you raise the level of attack on fad14 very quickly like you know him from 50 years…maybe it is you who has hate to spread and you are happy he say something you can attack easily…What fad14 is saying that deserve so much attack on his intelligence and morals?…did he ask to kill Armenians or Palestinians??…But your real intention is clear when you say some Armenians UNFORTUNATELY fight with Kataeb and LF so don’t please bullshit us that you are worried about Armenians you only want a chance to attack anyone who is with LF and Kataeb right?

I am a Lebanese and I have very close Armenian relatives and I love them and respect them but they are two types: one family is integrate in Lebanon they don’t speak Armenian (they know it but they speak Lebanese) and they are involve in politics and close to us and the other family is not integrated in Lebanon they speak Armenian and they are close to Armenian community so when the war happen guess what? the first family stay until today but the second family they leave to USA and never come back… fad14 start to say that some Armenian they got Lebanese passport but they don’t care too much about Lebanon and this true but you attack him so he replies harsh to you that’s what happen when you raise the level it become attacks from both side.

  • 23. Rodge | January 20th, 2008 at 4:20 pm

    Guys,

I think that the discussion got a little out of hand here. Patriarc, Fad14, Danny, you are in the same boat ya chabeb, we can all have different opinion about this subject, but please you should not disrespect each others because of an issue that is not among the country’s priorities now.
The issue of the Palestinians is first of all an international crisis, and if we can today send them home anc close the chapter, we will not wait a second.
It’s true that Palestinians hurt Lebanon more than anyone else, and it’s true that they have lost their real targets by hitting Lebanon and did what we all know.
I persnally hate Palestinians a lot, and i know they are a disease to every society they live in, and by living here in Kuwait i heard so much about their actions during Saddam’s invasion, and i always try tio avoid dealing with them here in Kuwait.
BUT, unfortunately, we are with them in the same boat, whether we like it or not, we should be fools if we think that the Palestinians livin in Lebanon or elsewhere other than Palestine, will go back there.
The international community have 2 solutions now, whether to naturalize them in the countries they are living, and the situation in Lebanon is as follows:
they are about 400.000 and they can make some balance facing the Shias, and on the other hand they will bring the same number of Christians Iraqis to neutralize them in Lebanon, and at the same time they will hit Hezbollah and finish its weapons.
Of course it is a plan, or a theory, or some of you will call it a fantasy, bt believe me it is real and could be chieved on the long run.
The other option is rto send them all to Iraq, so they can make a balance with the Shias there, and this is a true solution also.
All the Arab people are subject to a big plan, and while it is true that this plan was established by the Americans etc.. it is imlemented and well executed by those who are crying and whipping about the neutrralization.
the 2 plans will not be implemented now, so now please let us see what we should do in our country, at least let us be united to face any plan, and the biggest one is the emptiness that the 8th of March, with Syria and Iran behimd, are trying to leave the country under, in order to dominate it through some scam bags such as Hassan Nasrallah, Michel Aoun, Nabih Berri, Sleiman Frangieh, Wi’am Wahhab and co.

  • 24. Tarek | January 20th, 2008 at 4:53 pm

    Patriark Sfeir,
The problem of belonging to lebanon or not is not among muslims or arminians only, it is also among lebanese christians and that is why the problem of lebanon is severe. If not for the christians who sold their country like maradas, FPMs, SSNPs and others, Lebanon would have been in a pretty good shape now.
With respect to the palastenians and armenian issues well all what have been said is in a way correct. Most of armenians don’t feel “lebanese” to say at least, and yes they are far better than palestinians not in a racist way but if we looked at history, armenians did not destroy Lebanon and did not initiate a war against Lebanese people and tried take the country for their own. Still as fad14 said most of them refuse to blend in the Lebanese community. But I really can’t blame the Arminians or the Palestinians when I see a lot of lebanese, half of the lebanese at least, from all sects, shiaas, sunnis and christians fighting against lebanon and against the lebanese people for the benefit of iran, syria or for their personal benefit at least. I am starting to see Lebanon as a failed country.

  • 25. Danny | January 20th, 2008 at 5:30 pm

    Tareq,
you said”one family is integrate in Lebanon they don’t speak Armenian (they know it but they speak Lebanese)…

  • 27. Tareq | January 20th, 2008 at 8:12 pm

Danny what you prove with this question?…Do you prove I am anti Arabic?…I am not against Arabs but I was talking about Lebanon and being integrate in Lebanon so I said they speak Lebanese…Forgive me OK I will say they speak Arabic it’s fine for me…The problem it is you already have a opinion about me and all LF Kataeb supporter and you look for anything in what we say to say we are racist etc. I think my friend you are wasting your time on this blog because you don’t want to learn about the other and you are not ready to change your mind…All you will get is a good feeling for yourself that you are good and we are bad…Oh well life goes on…

  • 28. fad14 | January 20th, 2008 at 8:22 pm

They attack for just telling them that all refugees should be treated equal !!!

I know my history right. Palestinians are the roots and cause of most of our misery for the past 50 years but is that a reason to condemn the children who are born today in the camps and are treated far less than humans ????
Give them no food and no education and no future and then blame them for being terrorists.

As long as they are living in Lebanon we might at least give them residency and no passport. Which means they can work, they can learn and they can get decent jobs and can’t vote.
In many countries you get residency and no passport so we might as well treat them this way.

I am saying we gave Armenians far more than that and we get from them racism and comments like those i got today on this blog and they think they are far better than us.

They CALL us Lebanazee (not sure of the spelling) as if we are JUST VISITING here.

    N10452,
as someone here said already, ’sakata lqina3′.
You’re making a point to your readers that we should no longer pursue our right to live in our country, that puzzles me. What agenda are you pursuing here ? 10452 km2 are finite, let iran/saudiarabid/syria/etc who have always given them arms and hatred ideology host them on their soil. Naturalization of hundreds of thousands is a big price a country the size of Lebanon simply just can’t afford. Palestinians are people who should live in dignity given the rights and opportunities of every other deserving human. Lebanon can’t provide basic rights to its own citizens, hence why they should immigrate to a neighboring arab country. N10452, despite your best intentions, Loose Lips Sink Chips.

  • 32. Landshark | January 20th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

    Fad 14,

“we gave Armenians far more”, ARMENIANS DID NOT ABUSE THE SYSTEM!!!!!! Get it thru your thick skull! Armenians WORKED hard , strived for a better life and to be honest did a pretty decent job integrating!!!!!!.

PALESTINIANS MURDERED, RAPED, PILLAGED, DESTROYED THE COUNTRY!!!!!

JESUS CHRIST, the bias shown by you is mind boggling!!

The Palestinians have many REFUGEE camps in Lebanon! Can you name ONE that doesn’t have murderers, BOMB making experts, GUN AND AMMUNTION DEALERS, CAR THIEFS etc, etc. I am not in no way generalizing, I am sure there are wonderful Pals, but to compare Pals with Armenians and how Pals are treated is ABSOLUTELY misinformed.
    It is spelled Lebanese.

  • 33. N10452 | January 20th, 2008 at 11:15 pm

Fad14 makes a very valid point concerning Armenians .. The political parties who represent them did not manage to integrate the community properly, instead they formed their own ghettos and they side with the strongest ..

As Sheikh Bashir once addressed them and said : If you really love Lebanon, put ur words into action and fight for it.

  • 34. fad14 | January 21st, 2008 at 12:50 am

Landshark: Everyone who reads the comments here can see who is biased and who is a racist and who is refusing to integrate.

As long as you say you are Armenian, this automatically means you are NOT Lebanese.

  • 35. Landshark | January 21st, 2008 at 1:52 am

    N10452,

“As Sheikh Bashir once addressed them and said : If you really love Lebanon, put ur words into action and fight for it.”

And fight for it and what? What is the result of your “fighting” mr N?

    1.CHRISTIANS KILLING CHRISTIANS FIGHTING?
    2.PALESTINIANS KILLING CHRISTIANS FIGHTING?
3.FIGHTING FOR IT SO THE SYRIAN OCCUPATION AND BRUTALITY?
4.FIGHTING FOR IT WITH EMIGRATION OF CHRISTIANS, SICK OF FIGHTING.
5.CHRISTIANS POPULATION DWINDLING AT AN ALL TIME LOW, TO AVOID FIGHTING!
The list goes on my friend! With all due respect your leader Bachar, maybe fighting was not all it was meant to be was it? Especially for the christians.
Just because the Armenians chose not to fight means kick them to the curb, and I quote “GO BACK TO ARMENIA”?
You know what I figured out, I am wasting my time trying to debate with certain people with your mindset! CALLING me RACIST, funniest thing I have heard this year!

  • 36. Landshark | January 21st, 2008 at 1:59 am

Yo Fad I AM PROUD TO BE ARMENIAN! I WILL NEVER EVER RELINQUISH MY IDENTITY, you know why because of people like you who seem INTENT on forcing LEBANESE on someone who is actually at peace with his identity, WITH ALL DUE RESPECT to his birthplace, it’s heritage and history my good friend. This will be my last post today because like I mentioned with my above post, it is really hard to argue with your mindset.
Armenians have been persecuted, massacred and butchered you JERK! Do you ever see jews relinquishing their identity in foreign countries, they have their synagogues, their cultural centers and if you were ask one, HE WOULD NEVER SAY HE is AMERICAN JEWISH, FRENCH JEWISH OR BRAZILIAN JEWISH, the answere would be JEWISH! Do you see the resemblace?????? I am sure you don’t! You are the reason and mindset that Lebanon will NEVER EVER be a country at peace!

  • 37. Michele | January 21st, 2008 at 7:53 am

3 years ago i met Mr. Carlos Ghosn in a book signing. While conversing with him a lady approached him and asked him how come he spoke arabic and he replied back with a exquisite charming smile that he was Lebanese (not brazilian nor french). I was SO proud and somehow grateful to a such a successful person to still recognise his origins.
What i’m trying to say that u can in no way deny ur origin, it’s very difficult. We should be grateful that we still have a land and a home!!!
Armenians did somehow contribute in the economy of Lebanon, but like jews they hold on dearly to their origins so they won’t never forget their painful history.
As for the palestinians, although i’m a big supporter of human rights, but i don’t think they deserve our passport. Let us just give them residencies and better work employment.

  • 38. fad14 | January 21st, 2008 at 9:10 am

I guess you might still read this Landshark: your comments and how you reply to me is a representation of your race and identity.

    Jewish = religion
    Armenian = nationality and race

Remove that Armenian flag from your home, learn the Lebanese national anthem, start speaking some Arabic and stop pretending that Burj Hammoud is the hub of the Lebanese economy, we rarely go there except to buy Sujok.

    Landshark

Jewish is a race so yes they are going to be Jews wherever they go, just like we’re Christian wherever we go.

Armenian is a nationality not a race.

Danny danny, thank u so much for enlightening me!!!! I always thought that judaism was a nationality of Jewland!!!!!!

Anyway, cowboy, i was refering to the similar history between the 2 people; the genocide and the holocaust. Both were persecuted for whom they were.
But i guess u are to busy to understand as u need to keep on insulting the rest.

Michelle thank you for the story on Carlos Ghosen I also met him in USA one time after a speech he give here and he say he is happy of his Lebanese and Brazil and France connection…I think now he has strong Japanese connection too so I think he is successful because he don’t forget his roots but also he integrate well with the new home…I don’t want Armenians to forget the roots of course I am proud of the Armenian culture they are the first Church in history and they are good people you don’t hear about war from Armenians they are confident people and peaceful…Lebanon is in tough situation and need help of everyone so because most Armenians they stay on the side some Lebanese they want them to sacrifice more for Lebanon and it is also a valid point…There is no need for all the insult and to be too sensitive the Lebanese they treat Armenians good and the Armenians they do good things for Lebanon.

PS: forget the jerk Danni hopefuly he say Goodbye for real this time
