Tom Penn,
I think we have a major problem called POlitical Islam nowadays and i dont see any hopes in changes for very simple reasons.

The problem is in Islam and the Koran cannot be touched. They HAVE to abide by it and it dictates their way of living, how to rule etc ...

What is needed is anothe Ataturk but worldwide this time, too bad such a guy comes only once in a lifetime.

Mano, thank you for the great post. I can possibly shed some light on the hopes of many westerners for the ME. There are some wonderful features of Democracy that could eventually help to heal the perpetual sectarian hatreds that plague ME society.

Beyond representation of the people in government, Democracy demands open debate on policies and laws, creating a lot of "people power" and opening up a society to many different points of view. Much like access to the internet can allow individuals to explore the ideas of others to help inform one's on opinions. It gives outlets to air grievances more powerful and effective than the point of a gun.

For example, blacks could never win equal rights in the US through violence. But, in a Democracy, peaceful leaders with powerful ideas, like Martin Luther King Jr emerge to lead us to understand injustice inherent in our system and lead us to a better way. The hope is that this "opening up" of ME societies can lead to more tolerance of others.

I have come across many, many truly moderate Muslims in my like here in America and on the internet. There is great hope that a change toward greater tolerance can emerge within the broader Muslim world.

And if it doesn't, we will eventually have to take the gloves off and kick some serious ass. This is an option we are very reluctant to use, thank GOD, because that would be a horrific bloody mess. Here is an article on why we are reluctant to wage war in the traditional sense of the word:

palestinianphilosopher, I must have missed the comment about the whole middle east kissing israels butt forever. But, I personally think it would be nice if you could learn to live in peace. By the way, this IS hizballah's fault. Your terrorist proxy armies do not serve the interests of the people. They merely keep you suffering in a state of perpetual war. Looks like you would get tired of that after a while.

Tomorrow I'm sitting in a parliamentary committee in the Israeli Parliament regarding the war in cyberspace, and i'll be more than thankfull if you allow me to say these words on your behalf in order to assist the government and parliament to understand the views of this conflict.

Most of us in the West are not as foolish as our media makes us appear.

We know there is no reasoning with a 7th century political ideology masquerading as a religion. We know the only path to peace is victory, and the path to victory is a complete transformation of the Middle East. That will require destroying terrorist groups and the infrastructure and governments that support them. It will also require crushing Islamic culture with our own -- transforming Islam itself into a watered-down, nonviolent religion.

Israel's incursion into Lebanon, like the US invasion and rebuilding of Iraq, is a key part of the whole strategy. Supporting people like you in Lebanon is another key part. But the war will really be won over the next 3 generations or so, as we help the people of the middle east lose faith in Islam and begin to treat it as unimportant. They can keep the name "Muslim" if they want, as long as they abandon the vile teachings of Muhammed.
