Internet in Lebanon

Lebanon to get additional internet bandwidth from India [From the DailyStar]
Government to buy 45 gigabytes for $45 million in coming months

Once i read this article’s title, i thought things are gonna improve, but it turns out the title is deceiving as the content implies we will never probably get that bandwith.

“The Ministry of Telecommunications announced that the additional bandwidth is expected to reach Lebanon in the month of May but I think that this will not happen on time because of the difficulties encountered by the Lebanese government with the Egyptian intelligence service,” Riad Bahsoun told The Daily Star.

“The entire society will migrate to an information society. You can have the best policy in the world but if you don’t have enough bandwidth then you have nothing,” he commented. “It will absolutely decrease internet services prices.”

When will we have a proper connection in Lebanon ? No one knows.

Is this what we are teaching the new generation of LF?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

If we go back in time to the mid 70’s to early 90’s, as LF, we used to preach, work, had many projects and ideas to turn Lebanon to a state where Christians from the region can look at as a beacon of light, hope and bright future. We used t work on projects hoping that one day we will bring those Christians to Lebanon and provide them with security and peace.
I still remember Charles Malek, Fouad Frem Boustany , ….among others. I still remember the Lebanese Front …. The LF with Bachir and Samir (the old one and not the one he burried in the ministry of defece).
I was emailed this picture by an old time rafi’ and we both were shocked, surprised, sick, …. you name it.
Is this is the new “I3dad Fikri” in the LF? What a shame and what an end to great project.

Arab-Israeli village Israeli village beat Lebanon’s “hummus” record

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Just when I thought we couldn’t get any more pathetic.
Why doesn’t Mr Fadi Abboud think of new ways to market the Lebanese hummus outside Lebanon instead of spending money on a huge hummus plate ??

ABU GOSH, Israel — At the risk of whipping up discord with Lebanon, an Arab-Israeli village is planning to make the world’s biggest hummus, a humble chickpea dip that stirs passions across the Middle East.

On Friday, residents of Abu Gosh, near Jerusalem, will mash up 4,000 kilogrammes (8,800 pounds) of chickpeas, sesame paste, olive oil, lemon juice and garlic. [More]

Hezbollah Property Unit to Finish Rebuilding Beirut in a Year

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Waad SAL, the property unit of Lebanese political party Hezbollah, will finish rebuilding southern Beirut destroyed by a 33-day war with Israel in 2006 within a year, said Waad’s general manager.
“We will complete the rebuilding of the remaining 180 buildings by mid 2010 even if the government does not fund the project with the remaining money that it pledged to offer,” said Hasan Jishi in an interview today in Beirut.
The Lebanese government pledged $180 million of the total $400 million construction project, Jishi said. “The government gave until now $80 million and there is a delay in getting the rest but this will not deter us,” he said.
The project is being funded by donations from overseas countries and building materials are given by Arab and Islamic companies, Jishi said. The Jihad Binaa Institution, the Beirut-based social and economic development arm of Hezbollah, will make up any shortfall, he said.
“If these two sources are not enough to complete the project, then Jihad Binaa Institution will fund the rest,” Jishi said.
During the war about 242 buildings were destroyed and some 1,300 buildings damaged, Jishi said.
“We have delivered 45 buildings to their owners and at the end of August we will deliver another 35 buildings,” he said. “We have also completed the rehabilitation of all damaged buildings.”
Hezbollah, meaning party of God, and its allies will form part of Lebanon’s new government. Saad Hariri, the leader of Lebanon’s pro-Western coalition, is currently holding talks with all political factions on forming a national unity government since he was designated prime minister on June 27.

Who is the real enemy?

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

I don’t know if this topic was raised before but there is no harm in re-posting it.

A report was done showing that Syria still occupies 460 KM2 and Israel 60 KM2. The territories still occupied make up 5% of Lebanon.

So why is Syria a friendly state while Israel is the ultimate enemy?

Did Gebran Bassil really lower the cell phone rates ?

Monday, June 29th, 2009

The rates on the regular lines are much lower now, and this cannot be disputed. However, when it comes to the prepaid cards, which have the bigger portion of the Lebanese market, the price rates weren’t lowered at all and here’s the proof:

Official Iranian Election Results

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

According to some websites this is a scan of a leaked letter containing the official result in Iran presidential elections.

Interior Ministry Official Results

In the letter, the minister advises Khamenei that he is “responding to the apprehension and cause for concern you indicated relating to the results of the 10th elections of IRI and to your personal view as to the prudency of renewing Mr. Dr. Mahmoud Adhmadinejad’s presidency at this critically sensitive time, and as such please be advised that all planning and advanced steps have been taken (by the Ministry) to allow for an announcement [of victory] in favor of whichever candidate is favoured by the regime and the revolution, and that all actions have been taken preemptively to circumvent all probable repercussions by the political leaders of parties and candidates and their camps and that all are under the microscope and surveillance.” Mahsouli then provides Khamenei “for your informational purposes only, the accurate vote count.” The first line is the total number of votes case, then it shows the tally we listed below (Mousavi first, Karrouubi second, then Ahmadinejad, Rezai, and blank votes). Finally, the minister asks Khamenei how to proceed.

SAUDI WOMAN DEFENDING THE HONOR OF HER PURSE

Friday, June 19th, 2009

I was having a wonderful and peaceful dinner with my family at Julia’s, Le Mall Habtoor. Nothing was going to ruin my evening (I always knew that after our dinners together each month, new wardrobe shopping would be coming, that it is why we have our dinners at malls, the real reward would come afterwards). We finished our dinner and like usual, my favorite part came, and I ran toward the shopping stores not knowing what to choose; then suddenly a woman’s voice came soaring with loud screeches into the air, everyone in the mall gathered around to see what was going on.

A bearded, skinny and dark skinned man was beating one of the Habtoor Hotel security guards and the young girl who shouted was cursing and jumping all around. I approached one of the viewers to get an understanding for all of this mess that what going on; to be honest it looked as if we were surrounded by barbaric animals in some sort of zoo; sometimes people lose control as if they are some sort of animals, and unfortunately we would only see that within the Arab world and seldom in the European world where people are far more civilized and educated.

So what happened? As we all know, whenever we enter Le Mall at Habtoor, a security man asks us to open our purses so he could lay an eye in it to make sure that we are not hiding some sort of weapon; so as usually the security man asked this young woman (who turned out to be a Saudi and yes, a Saudi with a headscarf wearing very tight black pants with the line of her string showing) to open her purse, so she did; the security man doing his job gave a look into the purse (then why the hell would he ask her to open her purse if not to look at what is inside!) when this civilized girl smacked him in the face and started to yell in Arabic obviously “how dare you look into my purse?”, her husband, fiancée or whatever he is (also a Saudi) went completely mad and started beating the security guard just because he looked into his wife’s, fiancée’s purse. As we all know, the Habtoor Hotel is for a Saudi man and he will stand for his people, especially for the honor of the Saudi woman’s purse, and I am sure that the fate of this poor security guy won’t turn out to be very good.

LEBANESE CHRISTIANS…WHATS NEXT?

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen                           ~Winston Churchill~

The Christians of Lebanon are making an unprecedented exodus from the land in which their ancestors have lived since Christ taught here; we are known for our respect for other religions, and our approval of everything that goes in our Lebanon. Radical Islamic sects like Hezbollah have been driving the Lebanese Christians out of their homeland (recent prove, the “glorious victory” war against Israel in 2006) and their churches. The disrespect we are getting from our fellow –let’s say- brothers and sisters (Sunni and Shiia’s) has become highly threatening which I believe will lead us, all of the Christians into a disastrous ending, shall I say an ending which our true families in Iraq have been receiving.

Some of you may be wondering by now why have I mentioned the Sunni’s, our allies in this whole political institution; as you all know, Saed el Hariri and Jumblat will be meeting with Hassan Nassrallah in order to congratulate each other with big and warm hugs and kisses and off course to talk about politics and where do they see things going. So Saed el Hariri, Jumblat and Hassan Nassrallah will be talking about our future (and when I say our future, I mean the future of Lebanon, because the Lebanese Christians are the rock of Lebanon) and we (the Christians) are still fighting and cursing each other (obviously because some people follow that baboon of a leader called Michel Aoun).

The plot against Christianity and the Christians is very plain to see; let us start with Hezbollah and the FPM:

The true reason why Hezbollah allied with the FPM is not because they adore them, it is not because they are so grateful to them for standing with their degrading and diabolic ideology, it is not because they are afraid that Lebanon will witness another civil war, it is simply because they see Aoun and his allies as puppets; Hassan Nassrallah never took Aoun’s opinion about starting that devastating war, Hassan Nassrallah never took Aoun’s opinion to have his god damn hairy face on our cross, Hassan Nassrallah never took Aoun’s opinion about having a religious aria done for him in a church, Hassan Nasrallah never took Aoun’s opinion about keeping his black weapons…Aoun took Hassan Nassrallah’s opinion in keeping the devil’s weapons, Aoun took Hassan Nassrallah’s opinion at going to Syria and befriending his new buddies who murdered a lot of Lebanese Christians and a lot from his followers, Aoun took Hassan Nassrallah’s opinion about not having any Lebanese detainee in Syria, Aoun took Hassan Nassrallah’s opinion in letting go the murder of our beloved Samer Hanna, Aoun took Hassan Nassrallah’s opinion in becoming his little orange sheep.

 Moving on to our allies:

Saed el Hariri didn’t take our opinion in meeting with Hassan Nassrallah; Jumblat hasn’t been taking our opinions since long time ago (anyways, Jumblat isn’t even worth it, Druze have always been known for their blue blood and degrading mentality); No one took our opinion in voting for Berri all over again….

That’s how it all starts; with the little plots being made right under our noses and we letting it go or simply stroll in front of us without budging even our tiniest finger.

When are the Christians going to stand together once and for all?  When are we going to have a say to everything that has been and will be going on?  When will we stand up for our right? When will we be strong enough to stand against this whole Islamic movement thing that has been going on for centuries and still is? When will be able to decide for others than being decided for? When will we be able to go to Dahyie and claim it ours since it used to be the land of Christians (and if Hassan Nassrallah thinks that Jbeil and Kesserwan are for the muslims and that we the Christians came as “ghouzat” then he should start studying some historical facts and face the truth)…

So what is going to happen to the Lebanese Christians?

The Armenian candidate’s seat in Beirut I: Solomon’s Baby

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

It is with great regret that I received the news today about the withdrawal of our charismatic Armenian Catholic candidate, Richard Koyoumjian, from the race in Beirut I.

Dr. Kouyoumjian has been involved in the Lebanese Forces for the past three decades. He enrolled during the days of Bashir and remained committed during the days of Samir by means of his involvement in the works and lobbying of the Diaspora in Washington D.C.

His candidacy unfolded naturally and his role seemed to fit like a glove. Not only did he represent the spirit of Ashrafieh and its Christian diversity, he also represented the young competent idealist that many Lebanese Forces supporters have been longing for recently.

However one big obstacle came in the way. It was the incumbent MP, Serge Tor Sarkissian, who was running again for the position. Regardless of what Ashrafieh represents for Serge or how good he is with his opportunistic skills, it seems that a deal had to be brokered in total fairness with the principles of the Cedar Revolution.

Not that Dr. Kouyoumjian did not represent the Armenians – in fact he succeeded in representing both Armenians and Non-Armenian Christians – but the unwritten agreement with the Armenians is that they choose their candidates just like March 8 Armenians get to choose their candidates.

Again, this doesn’t mean that the March 14 Armenians do not want Dr. Kouyoumjian. Instead we had to deal with a self-indulgent candidate who, throughout his 9 year tenure, did not learn, it seems, on the importance of compromising for the sake of the nation.

When the mature decision makers of the Lebanese Forces, more specifically Dr. Geagea and Dr. Kouyoumjian, realized they were facing a stubborn irresponsible person who had his personal interests at stake, they had to take a responsible decision.

According to the Ancient Testament, two women who were arguing over who was the true mother of a child, came to Solomon seeking his wise judgment. When he offered to divide the child in two with a sword, the true mother was revealed when she showed compassion and decided to give up the child rather than see him hurt.

Once again – and why should we be surprised? –, the Lebanese Forces conceded an important asset for the sake of the success of the Cedar Revolution. This should not at all reveal weakness but rather grandeur. The LF could have pursued the race for its own sake unilaterally – and even then, we would have had great chances to win. But being the true mother of the cause, it decided to sacrifice.

Dr. Kouyoumjian hasn’t left us as he has been appointed by Dr. Geagea as the LF’s official spokesperson for the elections. What happened today is something we shouldn’t be ashamed of but rather proud.

The generals are out – good news after all.

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

In the aftermath of the assassination of Rafik Al-Hariri in 2005, and since then, 4 high-profile security officials were held in custody of the Lebanese authorities without being charged, as permitted by Lebanese law when the detainees are believed to be a threat to national security.

Now that the Hariri case is under the international tribunal’s jurisdiction, such detention cannot be justified by the laws governing it. This led to the court’s decision to release them, and the Lebanese justice department acquiesced.

At first I was infuriated when I first read the news. How could they let them loose after what they have allegedly done? They might run away or start causing chaos again!
Coming back to my senses , and having reviewed the facts led me to think otherwise.

The fact that the Lebanese government abided by the decision of the tribunal is yet another proof that this case has not been politicized as Hezbollah & co. have been claiming.
More importantly though, and in the context of the upcoming elections, what has happened today should be an eye-opener for a lot of people.

When the tribunal was in the very early stages of being formed, we all saw how many impediments the ‘opposition’ put in the way of its formation (Resigning from the government, boycotting the parliament, to name a few of the non-violent ones). All was done under the pretext that this is a politicized tribunal whose verdict has already been pronounced and bought by the March 14th Alliance and that its formation will be a threat to Lebanese sovereignty.

Today’s event have shown how wrong March 8th Alliance was, but most of all, it offered us an opportunity to view the contrast between the 2 parties and how much they value the rule of law when it does not play in their favor…Enough for me to decide which of them I want to lead my country into the future.

The Ally of the LF

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

This is the ally of the LF in the Mountain. He is the ally of the LF in March 14. He is (was) one of the leaders of the cedars revolution. He is one of those that many LFers repeated behind their leader the refrain: “they came to us, they speak our language, they hold our slogans.” This is one of the strategic allies of Samir Geagea.
