Maid suicides in Lebanon
Posted by Mark
Whenever I get back to Lebanon one of the things that pisses me off is the amount of racism that still exists there. I was just checking CNN and noticed an article called Maid Suicides and it turned out to be an article about the recent spate of maid suicides in Lebanon. This is extremely depressing and honestly I am not sure what can be done to educate the employers of those maids. Anybody have any ideas? How do you educate a whole country? [CNN Link]
Note: Here is a link to a Lebanese blog that focuses on this issue [Link]

Leb attitudes are influenced by the culture of racism that surrounds us (Lebanese are racist people in general and this blog is here to support my words) lets not 4get our israeli enemy the biggest racist country on planet earth.. ekhh we’re out of luck !!
Most Lebanese are what they are : RACIST PEOPLE WITH ALOT OF HATRED IN THEIR HEARTS.
Responsibilty : do not make excuses or blame others for our behaviours. We are at fault and we must change, for example, we need to stop calling black people ” 3bid”.. chi bi 7azin..
We must accept totla responsibility for our actions and work 2gether to get solve our issues.
Demanding perfection of ourselves is unrealistic (semi3 ya maximus) bcuz no one is perfect, al marounieh mano a7ssan min al sinneh bi chi wel chi3eh mano a7ssan min durze bi chi.. wel abyad mano a7ssan min al assawad bi chi..
Time to acknowledge our mistakes , learn from them and move on.. we’re all the same..

Honestly, the problem started with racism and the neglicence of the Lebanese government, as well as the Embassies from which those workers are from have made things much worse.
Only the Phillipine banned any of its workers to go to Lebanon lately and doesnt let any of them come back if they ever travel, but nothing is done for the rest.
Due to the domestic violence and racism, foreign maids out of fear and sometimes revenge are stealing their owners and leaving. While this may seem fair to those who treat them badly, there are many who treat them as equals and in the best ways possible and still get robbed, and i am not talking about exceptions here.
So the issue is quite a dilemna as good people fear leaving them alone as they might steal the house and leave or throw your baby off the balcony like one did last year, and those who are racist keep them locked up and only make things worse.
What’s to be done?
Let the ISF investigate at least one case of those suicide cases and not close it in few minutes and then maybe we can start having educating people.
I read a report where a case was called suicide even though the maid was clearly killed.
What a disgrace this country has become …

Truly shameful. This is not the first time that I hear about this in the international media and it is another sore point on our reputation as a people.

A lot of Lebanese people are very good people, from all religions and areas you will find GREAT people in Lebanon. But the majority of Lebanese people are not very good people, they are not educated to respect the law and to be honest and to be fair to others.
Those who will not be very nice employers for a maid are people who think they are better than others just because they are born from a certain religion, they are not trained to respect the rights of other human beings so they will not treat a maid well.
Or people who think it is Ok to blow up a bus because the enemy also kills innocent civilians, these people are not better than their enemy so it will not be a nice job to work for them.
Also people who think it is their divine right to have a militia, they are not trained to respect the law so it will not be good to deal with them.
Religion is a big part of people’s life in Lebanon but it don’t always give them a good example to follow, many times the religious people are corrupt or the religious message is intolerant so the people are not educated with good values.

Living up to our bad reputation has become a part of our daily life style, for example our young and educated univ students claim to be so civilized and LEBNENIYEH, but they are yet to let a chance pass by without cursing and humiliating each other over their political affiliation, take the uni election bidab7o ba3ed bissibo ba3ed over it……
I am so da-mn sick of our Lebanese racist attitiudes and the lowest common denominator mentality of those who are so proud of being the way they are… hayda hinde ri7to tala3 w hayda sirilankeh ahbal w hayda soureh 7mar w hayda abed , kell wa7ad aswad min 3yitlo abed !!!!!
Shame indeed !!

Doc
I totally agree with your number 8.
And I also believe that it is mainly the problem of the school system. I never heard about all these problems when I was in school, we never learn how to deal with this kinda issue in school and our parents do not tackle it because they were not educated about it either.
When you live abroad you learn more and more about multi-culture and the respect of a human being….
But what do you expect from a nation that does not agree on a history book ?? ? what do you expect from a nation that it takes 6 month after its election to form a government ?
It is a shame we are 7th world country not 3rd
14. Darwish | December 4th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
Agreed Doc, we have a long way to go to learn about respecting other nationalities and races although different than we are. I wonder how would those lebanese that mistreat others would feel if they were treated the same and discriminated against based on their arab origin abroad? ya3ni, what goes around, comes around!

We are indeed 1 of the most racist people on earth and it really sucks how we treat the other races.
Throughout the years till today in every company I worked with either in Lebanon or in the gulf I always have to convince the management that we need to invite the Asians to the annual gathering party.
However if there’s a race I’m really racist against it’s the aounis, can’t help it, I really can’t tolerate stupid n vulgar people!
