A document drawn up by a senior Israeli military officer warns the Israeli Army is not adequately prepared to counter Hezbollah in a future war.

[Interview with Lebanese President Gen Michel Sulayman, by Raghidah Dirgham, from New York: "There Is No Syrian or Iranian Negative Role in Lebanon Now"]
Lebanese President Gen Michel Sulayman has said, “There is no Syrian or Iranian negative role in the current Lebanese situation.” However, on the other hand, he stresses that the regional issues are reflected on Lebanon.
In a lengthy interview with Al-Hayat conducted in New York, where he delivered Lebanon’s address to the UN General Assembly, Sulayman saysthat US President Barack Obama has promised him that there will not be a solution at the expense of Lebanon, and that the issue of the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon has the same priority in the United States as it has in Lebanon.

Monday, September 28th, 2009Elite guard buys stake in Iran’s state telecom
Monday, September 28th, 2009Powerful military force also a vast conglomerate that is accountable only to the Supreme Leader
Associated Press
A consortium connected to Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard bought a majority share in the country’s telecommunications company yesterday, Iranian state media reported, bringing the strategic sector under the elite military force’s control.
The Etemad-e-Mobin consortium’s $7.8 billion purchase gives it a 50 per cent plus one share stake in the Iranian Telecommunications Company.
The deal underscores the guard’s increasing clout in Iran since hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad – himself a former Guard member – came to power in 2005. Over that period, companies affiliated with the guard have been awarded more than 750 government contracts in construction and oil and gas projects.
State television said Etemad-e-Mobin was selected over another Iranian consortium that had submitted a bid for the majority stake. A third group was eliminated after authorities decided it did not hold the necessary security credentials.
The telecom share sold yesterday is part of the government’s project to privatize sectors still in state hands. But reform-minded politicians, and even some conservatives, have complained that institutions affiliated with the ruling system are being awarded stakes in the privatized firms, while the private sector is left out.
The purchase gives the Revolutionary Guard, whose forces led the violent crackdown on the massive street protests after the disputed June presidential election allowed Ahmadinejad a second term in office, control over the country’s telecommunications network.
During the demonstrations, the government routinely interrupted mobile phone networks.
On top of its enormous military power, the guard is a vast military-based conglomerate accountable only to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Sunday, September 27th, 2009Remarks on Dr.Geagea’s speech
Sunday, September 27th, 2009To begin with, You can read Dr.Geagea’s full speech here.
This year’s LF martyrs mass was a bigger success than last year in terms of organization and participation. The streets were jammed for hours, and LFers from all over Lebanon came to attend the mass and pray for the martyrs and of course to listen to Hakim’s speech.
I still believe a martyrs’ mass should not be turned into a political festival but it’s a lost cause in Lebanon, so i will ignore this point for the moment.
As for Hakim’s speech, i did not see any of the surprise the media had been talking about for days now.
On the contrary, the speech was relatively calm and full of direct & indirect political messages to the Opposition, mainly Hezbollah. (Proof is Hezbollah got upset by the speech and were the first to reply today and what a lame answer that was.)
I believe Geagea made statements that the Lebanese people, mainly M14ers needed to hear to remember how big of a threat Hezbollah is to Lebanon, and how much responsibility we have as Lebanese and most importantly as Christians in standing against such a threat. ( I wish he had pointed out as well the alarming growth of islamists & jihadists in the north)
In summary:- He reminded the Lebanese there is no such thing as “aktariyye cha3biyye” that Hezbollah is claiming to justify his loss in the elections, but only a parliamentary majority as set by the LEBANESE constitution.
- He also hit on a sensitive point when he challenged the Opposition, mainly HA & Amal, to clearly state whether they agree or not with the 50-50 status. (Taef)
- He defended the Patriarch and supported him and blasted those who were trying to undermine his role and the Church’s role.(Fadlallah & Hezbollah)
- He critisized the Opposition & Hezbollah and asked them to stop their tricks and games trying to force their will under the banner of national unity & national reconciliation ( he mentioned here the invasion of Beirut in 2007).
- He showed support to UN resolutions and asked for their implementation. ( specifically UN 1701)
- He addressed the president and pleaded him to form the government asap.
Those are most of the key points in the speech. It was a good & calm speech, with lots of direct & indirect messages. However, i have few remarks on it.
1- He should have reminded people of his apology and translated it by forming groups & opening offices to enhance the LF’s image.
2- He should have emphasized on finding common ground among Christians and trying to settle things with the LF’s opponents in ways that would serve the Christian community better.
3- He should have mentioned the alarming increase of Sunnite extremist groups, specially in the North where lots of LF hard-core villages could be threatened.
4- He should have talked about a general reconciliation among LFers before starting to build a new party.
This is all i can think of for now. It is a political speech for a political festival. I wasn’t expecting much but i believe people needed to hear that the LF is cleaning its image properly, not just by empty talks and public apologies, that LFers need to reconcile, that Christians need to find more common group to face the upcoming dangers.
Finally, may all our martyrs rest in peace. Yesterday was a celebration of their martyrdom first and foremost.

Thursday, September 24th, 2009Syria makes overture to U.S
Thursday, September 24th, 2009The Washington Times | By Richard Sale
Syria is reorganizing its foreign intelligence operations and sidelining officials with unsavory pasts in an effort by President Bashar al-Assad to consolidate control and improve Syria’s relations with the United States, Middle East specialists and former and current U.S. officials say.
Richard Norton, a Levant specialist at Boston University, former CIA counterterrorism chief Vincent Cannistraro and two serving U.S. intelligence officials who asked not to be named because they are not authorized to talk to the press told The Washington Times that the task of overseeing Syria’s foreign intelligence operations has been transferred from the heavy-handed military intelligence agency, known as the Mukhabarat, to Syria’s General Intelligence Agency (GI), which formerly handled domestic matters and now oversees relations with the United States and Saudi Arabia.
Israeli TV shows army training anti-Hezbollah
Thursday, September 24th, 2009Originally published by Israel TV Channel 1, Jerusalem, in Hebrew 22 Sep 09.
[Anchor] During Second Lebanon War [in 2006], the IDF had difficulty tackling Hezbollah in the thickets of southern Lebanon. As one of the war’s lessons, the army set up a training facility in northern Israel to prepare the troops for the next war. Our army affairs commentator Yo’av Limor joined Golani commando fighters in the nature reserve.
[Soldiers] Grenade! Fire, fire, fire, fire, fire, fire.
[Soldier] Roger, understand not to expose ourselves eastward. Over.
[Limor] It could have been a part of a battle, one of many waged during the Second Lebanon War.
[Maj Moti, Golani unit commander] The way the enemy’s fortifications look, this terrain looks pretty much the same as the Lebanese contour. That’s what we’re simulating.
