NOTICE
- – - – - – -
CONTINUATION OF THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY WITH RESPECT TO THE
ACTIONS OF CERTAIN PERSONS TO UNDERMINE THE SOVEREIGNTY OF
LEBANON OR ITS DEMOCRATIC PROCESSES AND INSTITUTIONS

On August 1, 2007, by Executive Order 13441, the President declared a national emergency and ordered related measures blocking the property of certain persons undermining the sovereignty of Lebanon or its democratic processes or institutions and certain other persons, pursuant to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (50 U.S.C. 1701-1706). The President determined that the actions of certain persons to undermine Lebanon’s legitimate and democratically elected government or democratic institutions; to contribute to the deliberate breakdown in the rule of law in Lebanon, including through politically motivated violence and intimidation; to reassert Syrian control or contribute to Syrian interference in Lebanon, or to infringe upon or undermine Lebanese sovereignty contribute to political and economic instability in that country and the region and constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.

Despite some positive developments in the past year, including the establishment of diplomatic relations and an exchange of ambassadors between Syria and Lebanon, the actions of certain persons continue to contribute to political and economic instability in Lebanon and continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States. Therefore, the national emergency declared on August 1, 2007, and the measures adopted on that date to deal with that emergency, must continue in effect beyond August 1, 2009. Therefore, in accordance with section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)), I am continuing for 1 year the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13441.

This notice shall be published in the Federal Register and transmitted to the Congress.

BARACK OBAMA
THE WHITE HOUSE,
July 30, 2009.

THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary
____________________________________________________________
For Immediate Release July 30, 2009

TO THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES:

Section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)) provides for the automatic termination of a national emergency unless, prior to the anniversary date of its declaration, the President publishes in the Federal Register and transmits to the Congress a notice stating that the emergency is to continue in effect beyond the anniversary date. In accordance with this provision, I have sent to the Federal Register for publication the enclosed notice stating that the national emergency declared with respect to the actions of certain persons to undermine the sovereignty of Lebanon or its democratic processes and institutions is to continue in effect beyond August 1, 2009.

In the past 6 months, the United States has used dialogue with the Syrian government to address concerns and identify areas of mutual interest, including support for Lebanese sovereignty. Despite some positive developments in the past year, including the establishment of diplomatic relations and an exchange of ambassadors between Lebanon and Syria, the actions of certain persons continue to contribute to political and economic instability in Lebanon and the region and constitute a continuing unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States. For these reasons, I have determined that it is necessary to continue the national emergency declared on August 1, 2007, to deal with that threat and the related measures adopted on that date to respond to the emergency.

Bringing back History

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

I am so excited to know that the Change and Deform block is insisting that Zoubran Bassil be reinstated as Telecommunications minister.

I am excited because we can finally have a country that can go back to the days when Cell Phones didn’t exist. It doesn’t mean that we won’t have cell phones anymore or pay bills, no it just means that they won’t work at all; period; zero; nicht, nada, niente.

We can then experience Lebanon just the way our parents did in the good old days.

I think the phones work too well now. We need to bring this stupid fuckin pompous loser dumb ass piece of orange shit back.

THANK YOU CHANGE AND DEFORMED BLOCK

Are war drums beating on Israeli-Lebanese border?

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

by David Harris, Geng Xuepeng

JERUSALEM, July 29 (Xinhua) — When Israel’s military chief of staff, Gabi Ashkenazi, met new army recruits on Tuesday, he reassured them and the attendant media that all is quiet on the northern front.

“There was an incident which to our understanding was an explosion of a weapon cache belonging to Hezbollah, which is being handled by the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the Lebanese government,” the Israeli daily Ha’aretz quoted him as saying.

He was referring to the June 14 explosion at an arms depot in southern Lebanon. UNIFIL and the Lebanese army have launched an investigation in a bid to determine whether the ammunition is the leftover of the Israeli-Hezbollah war in 2006, or Hezbollah-stored arms.

Ashkenazi said Israel viewed the incident with gravity but anticipated no other major developments on the Israeli-Lebanese border in the near future.

Yet just 24 hours before the chief of staff made these comments, Israeli officials were expressing concerns that the Iranian- and Syrian-backed Hezbollah was trying to orchestrate civilian protests just across the frontier from Israel. The Shiite political and paramilitary organization is doing this to increase tension along the border, the officials said.

Xinhua has spoken with numerous experts in Lebanon, Israel and beyond since Ashkenazi offered his take on the northern situation, and, as with the upper echelons of Israeli military and diplomatic circles, opinion is divided.

“There is no other way around it. It’s bound to happen sooner or later,” said Ziad Abdelnour, the founder and president of the United States Committee for a Free Lebanon, suggesting the violence will inevitably resume.

“I do not expect an outbreak of hostilities on this front. Hezbollah has domestic priorities to deal with, while the Syrian, Iranian, and Israeli governments all have larger issues on their mind,” suggested the director of the Middle East Forum, Daniel Pipes. However, he decided to cover all bases by adding the rider that “surprises are routine in the Middle East and there might be one here too.”

Nayla ya Nayla …

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

I honestly did not see this coming when posting about Nayla’s wedding with Malek Maktabi.
Firstly, i want to congratulate the couple and wish them happiness and prosperity. (since some people thought i was upset by this wedding).

Second, I condem and refuse all sectarian attacks and personal & unjustified attacks against Nayla. Many posters should be ashamed of themselves and review what they wrote because it is an insult to their person before anything.

Now back to the main topic here, and to emphasize on Kezballah’s point, i would like to remind you all of Nayla’s stances before the elections and how “vague” and undecided she was on joining M14’s list. She was clear from the beginning, for anyone who reads between the lines, that she won’t be joining any Christian party in M14 but stay independant, and therefore we cannot blame her or accuse her of backstabbing or betrayal.

Most importantly, and for the LFers claiming they felt backstabbed when voting for Nayla, let me ask you guys to recalculate the odds of M14 winning without Nayla on their list, because as far as my numbers tell me, she was on top of almost every list in every district, ahead of The LF’s “official candidate”, Sheikh Nadim Gemayel.

Gebran was never that close to the LF, and was on Hariri’s list ( as an independant) in the past elections, and Nayla is just following his path :-)

Our only problem as Lebanese is that we forget so quickly !!
So refresh your memories and re-read your history and trust me you won’t be as shocked and dissapointed from many events …

For the time being, 7ello 3anna lal benet and re-evaluate your votes and punish her democratically in 4 years from now …

After all, she is still a Greek Orthodox Christian whose candidature was blessed by Motran Awdeh, and i am pretty sure he knows better than all of us here …

PS: Personally speaking, i find Nayla way nicer & cuter than Malek, or to say it better, i find him ugly and annoying but that’s just me …

Nayla Tueini Maktabi

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

I don’t like to defend any politician because I think it is good if we are used to criticizing them because they are people not Gods (or Nasr-Gods) but I am alarmed to see so many people spilling so much hate on Naila Tueini without any right to do it. So for those who are Christians but don’t know much about Christ, there are some good stories for you in the Bible you should read them carefully, one of them is exactly about judging the personal lives of other people, Christ told the crowd of hypocrits that they can stone the prostitute only if they don’t have any sins themselves, so no one stoned her because at least the hypocrits in that time still had a little conscience. In Lebanon today we have hypocrits without a conscience, they are like the Rabbis who crucified Jesus, now they are crucifying a young woman who never did anything wrong to them, who is minding her own life and business by marrying someone she loves, what a crime she is doing!!

Some comments are making her look like a prostitute because she married a Shiite, I want to know what will you do if one day your sister or your daughter comes to tell you I want to marry a non-Christian, will you go on the internet and put her picture and say she is a prostitute?

Some comments are making her look like a traitor because she married a Shiite after the elections, leish ya nawebigh when you went to the elections on June 7 did you think you were voting for Naila’s husband? Did you think you were on a reality show like the Bachelor?

Some comments are saying that Aoun is right about Naila, please refresh your memory and look at youtube what Aoun the liar tried to invent about Naila, he took a mistake visa that said Naila changed her religion to Moslem, this was a lie before the election and it is still a lie after Naila’s wedding, do you know what a civil marriage is? Naila is still Christian, and Aoun is still a liar.

You are accusing her that she fooled you because she did not announce her marriage before the elections, you forget that liars like Aoun are waiting to use anything against her and turn it to a dirty story, Naila Tueini did not fool you to win your vote, she outsmarted Aoun who is master at winning the votes of fools!

I ask myself what those who are attacking Naila Tueini (yes Tueini don’t try to erase it), what did you do to Lebanon more than her and what sacrifices did your family offer more than her family? If you lost a father, she lost a father, if you worked for a cause she worked for a cause, who are you to call a decent woman a prostitute and try to stone her without any right?

Those who are using this to attack Gibran and invent lies about him that he switched sides, you are either the dogs of Bashar or you are a Judas, I hope you collected 30 pieces of Silver from Aoun who invented this lie about Gibran, because if you did it for free then you are the most stupid of the fools.

For the many smart and cultured people I am sorry I had to waste the space to write this, so I try to make up for it with this nice reference about culture, it is a start point for the poetry of Naila’s grandmother, I hope you enjoy the readings:

Shi’ite Missiles, Zionist Cows and the Lebanese Army

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Shi’ite Missiles, Zionist Cows and the Lebanese Army
Prof. Barry Rubin – 7/27/2009

The explosions in a Hizbullah arms storage facility in the south Lebanese village of Khirbat a-Silm on Tuesday are testimony to the successful efforts of this organization to rebuild its strength south of the Litani River.

This success has come although UN Security Council Resolution 1701 expressly forbids a Hizbullah armed presence south of the Litani, and despite the presence of two military forces in the area supposedly committed to ensuring the implementation of the resolution – UNIFIL, and a contingent of the Lebanese Armed Forces.

Following the explosion, the Lebanese army maintained that it took place at a facility dating from before July 2006.
Hizbullah, for its part, initially tried to claim that the explosions were of Israeli cluster bombs scattered in the area during the 2006 war. The organization is now keeping silent on the matter.

According to the Lebanese media, Hizbullah members deployed in the area following the blast, preventing civilians from entering, as the army and security services began their “investigation.”

The explosion came as the Lebanese army was busy focusing on a different threat to national security – namely, violations of Lebanese sovereignty by Israeli forces close to the international border (the “Blue Line”).

According to Lebanese media reports, a clash between Lebanese and Israeli forces was narrowly avoided earlier this week, after the Lebanese authorities demanded the removal of an Israeli observation post near the village of Kafr Shuba, which is situated just northeast of the Shaba Farms (Mount Dov).

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

I’ve never been there until recently and i would definitly go back again.

It’s a great place to have a drink and enjoy a calm night out near the sea in the weekdays, or go out with a group and party on the weekends (and have a swim after it).

Place is located near Barbara checkpoint (Batroun) from the sea side, right after the army checkpoint.

Bil 2ezen mennak ya Hakim !
Can you explain those to me ? are we talking about the LF here ?

The LF was illegal and illegitimate ? Federalism is no longer an LF principle ?
What were we fighting for then ?

I ask those who keep insulting me and critisizing me for posting such things …
How do you expect me to work for the LF if this is what its leader is saying ?

Those are not my principles nor the LF principles, those are the signs of a dying party and an unfaithfull leadership.

Hezbollah blocking government formation

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Big surprise ! Hezbollah & the Opposition are back to blocking a government formation with their impossible conditions …

After admitting defeat in the elections, they left a window open to turn it back into a “fake” victory by claiming more people (in numbers) voted for them.

And now that they got Berri back where they want him, and Hariri as well, it’s time to raise the pressure and start building obstacles all around the new PM.

- Hezbollah wants veto power
- FPM wants also veto power but is requesting it under a different name (proportional distribution).
- Berri is slowly but surely taking M8 side and fading from his neutral position only 3 weeks ago.

Why is M8 doing that now ?

They thought Hariri would go visit Syria but he refused, so orders came from Syria to start blocking the government formation .. et voila !

Qassem Sees No Cabinet Formation in Near Future

And to justify their position:
Qassem: Syria Is Not Our Substitute…Hariri Didn’t Inform Us Of Any Government Layout Yet

And you wonder what Jumblatt is doing now ?? He is simply taking preemptive measures for any future clashes caused by the void left (another May7, Tent city coming back, etc …)

All what M14 can do and by M14 i mean Hariri & Christian allies is hold their positions and not change their stances or else they would be giving away their victory on June 7th.

Illegal Lebanon arms may have been Hezbollah’s

Friday, July 24th, 2009

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters)

The U.N. peacekeeping chief said on Thursday there were signs an illegal weapons stockpile that exploded last week in southern Lebanon belonged to the Lebanese guerrilla movement Hezbollah.

In a speech delivered behind closed doors to the Security Council, obtained by Reuters, U.N. peacekeeping chief Alain Le Roy also said that some of the people who tried to prevent U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon (UNIFIL) from investigating the site were Hezbollah members dressed in civilian clothes.

“A number of indications suggest that the depot belonged to Hezbollah, and, in contrast to previous discoveries by UNIFIL and the Lebanese Armed Forces of weapons and ammunition, that it was not abandoned but, rather, actively maintained,” he told the 15-nation council.

He said the mere presence of such weapons and ammunition dump south of the Litani River represented a “serious violation of resolution 1701.”

Security Council resolution 1701, which ended the 34-day war in 2006 between Israel and Hezbollah, banned all unauthorized weapons between the Litani River and the Blue Line, the U.N.-monitored border between Israel and Lebanon.

Hezbollah is backed by Iran and Syria.

The weapons at the site of the explosion were from various countries and included mortars, AK-47s, artillery shells and 122mm rockets, he said.

ARMS IN ‘GOOD ORDER’

“The weapons and ammunition dated from the 1970s to the 1990s and generally appeared to be in good order,” he added.

After Le Roy delivered his speech, U.S. Deputy Ambassador Alejandro Wolff joined Israel in accusing Hezbollah of violating the U.N. weapons embargo in southern Lebanon and undermining the efforts of U.N. peacekeepers there.

UNIFIL said last week that peacekeepers had been pelted with stones by a crowd of about 100 Lebanese in the village of Khirbet Selim while trying to investigate the July 14 explosion the following day at the suspected arms dump.

Israel’s U.N. ambassador, Gabriela Shalev, said in a letter to the Security Council that the arms cache that exploded clearly belonged to Hezbollah.

She said the actions of Hezbollah represented “a clear violation of 1701 which gravely endanger the stability in the region … (and) the local Lebanese population.”

UNIFIL’s difficulties did not end on July 15, Le Roy said. Three days later U.N. peacekeepers and Lebanese army personnel attempted to investigate a suspicious house near the site of the explosion but were confronted by a crowd of civilians, including women and children. Eventually the crowd began throwing stones at them.

“In the course of the events … UNIFIL noticed an increasing level of organization among those confronting UNIFIL,” Le Roy said about the July 18 incident.

Le Roy said the site where the explosion occurred was still being investigated.

It was unclear whether the 15-nation council would take any further action, though U.S. envoy Wolff made clear Washington was taking the incidents seriously.

Other council diplomats said the council should wait until the U.N. investigation is completed before taking any action.

Obama & racism …

Friday, July 24th, 2009

President Obama yesterday stood by his criticism that Cambridge police “acted stupidly’’ when they arrested Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr.[More]

How can the president of the United States allow himself to disrespect the police in that way ??

I read a lot of stories on the incident and nothing was “racist” about it. The Sergeant accused of “acting stupidly”, a highly respected veteran supervisor with a distinguished record in the Cambridge Police Department, refused to apologize. [Story]

Obama has been doing everything except being a president since he came to power. Unclear & conflicting positions on most issues, lack of courage in decision-making and some even went as far as calling him a narcissist. Only last week he was pitching in a baseball game, but of course since he is the first black American president, we don’t critisize him. Of course, if it were Bush u would have had already flash games mocking him.

Tons of critics arose upon Obama’s clumsy statement, two worthy mentioning:

The National Republican Senatorial Committee, thought if it was “appropriate for our nation’s commander in chief to stand before a national audience and criticize the men and women in law enforcement who put their lives on the line every day.’’

Some also wondered why the nation’s first black president, who ran a campaign that attempted to blunt race as an issue, addressed race so directly on a national platform.
