Appeasement is “the policy of settling international quarrels by admitting and satisfying grievances through rational negotiation and compromise, thereby avoiding the resort to an armed conflict which would be, expensive, bloody and possibly dangerous.”
In other words, it is simply giving in to an agressor’s demands in order to avoid conflict.
When I look back in history at the biggest and most common example of appeasement — England and France’s appeasement of Hitler — I can’t help but notice that we are facing the same situation here in Lebanon:
Let’s say that the French and British who were victorious in WWI are the M14 alliance which was victorious on March 14. And let’s say that Hitler is Hezballah.
Thirty years ago in Lebanon, the Shi’ite community was largely neglected and was living in poverty and misery. Then Hezballah took control of that community promising a better life and more rights… That’s the same way Hitler came to power; promising a defeated and humiliated German population to reclaim its dignity and rightfull place atop the world.
He then started to violate the Treaty of Versailles — but the British and French didn’t do anything about it, to avoid another devastating war in Europe.
The Nazis’ first violations were small and insignificant like the remilitarization of the Rhineland and the rearming of the German army with heavy weapons. England complained but did little else.
Then came the annexation of Austria. Which was a big deal — but again, the French and English didn’t do much seeing that Austria wanted to be annexed (or added to Germany).
Hitler was doing all of this under the excuse of uniting the German-speaking people in one country. Just like Hezballah is keeping its weapons under the cover of ‘resistance’.
Then Hitler set his eyes on the Sudetenland, a mountainous region of Czechoslovakia which is inhabited by German-speaking Czechs. The British, French, and Czechs weren’t happy about that. So to settle the argument, the Munich Conference was held. Let’s say this Munich Conference is the Doha Agreement. All parties returned from Munich with relief and proudly claimed that they spared Europe another devastating war — just like M14 claimed to have spared Lebanon another vicious civil war.
Neville Chaimberlan proudly told the British people: ”My good friends, for the second time in our history a British Prime Minister has returned from Germany bringing peace with honour. I believe it is peace for our time.” Oh how naive does that sound now.
Hitler had signed an agreement with the Soviets as well, assuring that he won’t attack them. In that deal, the Nazis and Soviets also secretly agreed to partition Poland amongst themselves. The Soviets were proud of that deal and claimed that it will protect them from Nazi aggression.
A few months later, Hitler invaded Poland and the rest is history.
The Nazis ate up most of Europe, invaded France and the Soviet Union, and went way beyond uniting the German-speaking peoples of Europe. WWII was the deadliest conflict mankind has ever seen and caused Europe years of suffering, misery, and death.
The moral of the story is: Stop appeasing Hezbollah! They’re lying! And giving in to their demands is just another Aspirin pill that we’re giving to Lebanon; it’s not going to solve the problem.
