Disposing of the Palestinian predicament in Lebanon

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Johnny Kairouz, a Lebanese living in Canada, has contributed this article to The Beirut Spring.

The issue tackled here does not imply that the crisis in Lebanon today is solely a Palestinian one. In fact, the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon are far from being held responsible for the recent events. Determining the actual culprits is a totally different subject which is anyhow far from being mysterious.

The Palestinian predicament in Lebanon mainly involves the refugees themselves, the Lebanese state, Israel and the Arab countries. All of the concerned parties, except Israel, long for their return to their homeland. Obviously, every faction has its own reasons.

The Palestinian refugees have been in constant dismay and dissatisfaction since their arrival to Lebanon more than five decades ago. The idea of being expelled from their homeland was their first and foremost consternation. Then came the meddling of their paramilitary groups in the maze of Lebanese internal – and external – politics: this era could be denoted as their rise and fall in Lebanon.

The rise was represented by the strong financial and military support they were receiving from international, regional and local actors. While the Soviet Union was provided them with the weapons and the logistics, the Arab countries offered them financial, political and media coverage. Most importantly, a big part of the Lebanese people sided with them.

Their decline started when they were opposed by another big part of the Lebanese people and when consequently Lebanon’s two neighboring countries intervened. This is when the Palestinian civilians started to pay the price of their armed groups’ adventures. Many civilians became victims of atrocious massacres – many of which were a reaction to what their armed groups had committed to other parties.

As a result of their contribution to the civil war, the Palestinians were severely reprimanded by almost everyone in Lebanon. Ever since the Taef Agreements, they were virtually condemned to stagnate in their camps.

The human rights and humanitarian situation they are undergoing is certainly undesirable. They are subject to many restrictions such as building and reconstruction in the twelve overpopulated camps they are confined to. Furthermore, while education is practically out of reach, they are prohibited from practicing more than 72 professions. In other words, their situation is not viable.

Although most of the Lebanese people are against nationalizing them, every group has its own reason. The first opinion, which is also upheld by most of the Arab countries, advocates their “right of return” to their homeland. This staunch Arab nationalist stance views the integration of the Palestinians – into the Lebanese society – as an admission of defeat in their ongoing conflict with Israel.

The second opinion views the settlement of the Palestinians in Lebanon as a destabilizing factor: it would threaten – the already shaky – demographic balance among the different religious communities in Lebanon. This opinion is mainly shared by the Christian and the Shia groups but also by the Sunnis who view them as potential rivals within their own community.

The Lebanese people also view the Palestinian camps as an imminent threat to their national sovereignty. Ever since the Arab-sponsored 1969 Cairo Agreement, the camps’ security is exclusively maintained by their armed element. The absence of the Lebanese Army in these areas has come to be known as “Security Isles” within the Lebanese territory.

The lack of the state’s full control over its territory has allowed several foreign powers to use these “Security Isles” for arms smuggling as well as hindering Lebanon’s internal security. The loose security surrounding some of the camps can allow, for instance, cars to be loaded with explosives in these areas and be sent to potential targets all over Lebanon.

The paramilitary groups in these camps can burst at any moment by reacting to a regional event thus create turmoil in Lebanon. Furthermore, the camps are allegedly being used to recruit and train terrorists who are later on sent on missions to Iraq. By harboring recruit camps, Lebanon is certainly attracting the entire nuisance that comes with it on an international and regional level.

Lebanon has many security deficiencies and not all of them are due to the Palestinian camps. Blaming all of Lebanon’s perils on the Palestinians would be excessively unjust. However the presence of the Palestinian camps does impede the process of building a better future for Lebanon.

For the three reasons stated above – the right of return; the demographic issue and; the security aspect – a solution certainly needs to be fostered. Without any doubt, the Palestinian civilians must have more rights and benefit from social welfare. The only problem is that Lebanon has – literally – other fish to fry.

Because unfortunately Lebanon cannot afford to grant the Palestinian refugees the treatment they deserve, because unluckily they have been used as scapegoats more than often and because their situation has been increasingly unbearable to them and to Lebanon, a radical decision is needed.

The matter has been procrastinated for years and maybe today is an auspicious time to deal with it once and for all. Lebanon has offered them shelter for more than half a century. Lebanon has also contributed its considerable share in the Arab-Israeli conflict. It’s now time for other Arab countries to offer the deprived refugees what Lebanon could not afford but that they sure can: Land, rights and money.

The resettlement of the Palestinians to other Arab countries will be a win-win situation. Lebanon will get rid of one of the major obstacles that are impeding the implementation of a strong sovereign state and the Palestinian civilians will have a better prospect in obtaining a brighter future pending to their hopeful return to their land.

International Tribunal voted under Chapter 7 !!

Mabrouk la Libnen, Mabrouk to all our martyrs …

That is the 2nd time i feel like opening Champagne, first time was when Hafez el assad died.

Update : Articles on the voting

UN Security Council OKs Lebanon Tribunal

From the Guardian

U.N. approves Hariri assassination tribunal
from CNN

A calm yet dangerous night ahead ..

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

The tribunal is gonna be voted within an hour in the UN, it is almost confirmed that neither Russia or China will use the veto to stop it ..

This is a historical day for Lebanon and the Middle East, such a tribunal has never been set for any country yet in the region, maybe even in the whole world.

A tribunal to punish the criminals, to stop those killing our politicians once and for all..

It is no surprise that Fat7 el Islam, Syrian backed terrorist group, start fights only 10 days before the voting on the tribunal, Syria is the prime target of this tribunal and its allies ( collaborators) will be the first victims of this tribunal ..

The night is still young, and i sense its gonna be a long night .. HOPEFULLY without any bombings … though i do fear Syria and its allies will never let us celebrate yet any achievement we make towards achieving our independance and sovereignty.

I ve prepared the Champagne for celebration :)

PS: FM & PSP & LF & all 14th of march supporters, keep your guns home, keep your fireworks home and let us celebrate this victory in a civilized manner.

SMS Service in Memory of Ramzi ????

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

I am not gonna link to any site or anything, i dont wanna be attacking anyone in person ..

But whomever had the bright idea of launching an SMS service and dedicating it to the soul of Ramzi Irani is someone who should be ashamed of himself …

I had just posted about Ramzi and how we didnt do anything for him .. i take it back if thats what we are capable of !

If your neighbor is annoying you ..

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

PS: This plan is only valid for the next 2 weeks since ISF Forces are killing anyone they suspect lately lool.
Just follow those steps:

1- Pick up a bag, stuff it with clothes and put it under his car.
2- Call the ISF, tell them your neighbor might be a suspected Fat7 el Islam member.

And the job is done, he will probably end up getting shot and killed.

You might wanna think twice before giving that call :D

Countdown to the tribunal

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Few hours separate us from the voting of the international tribunal under Chapter 7.

Lebanon will be given a grace period till June 10th to agree on voting on it locally. I cannot understand Qatar’s position yet, are they trying te be different or something by not voting on it ?

Anyway, not to worry you people, but i think the rest of this week is gonna be a heated one, cause as our Syrian ‘brothers’ 3awwadouna, they celebrate such decisions in their own way.

Je suis president et 6 ministres ??

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Hayda li ken na2issna ! another government and headed by who ?? Emile Lahoud ..
And what timing ! one day before voting on the international tribunal and giving the Lebanese government a grace period to agreeing on voting on it locally instead of adopting it under Chapter 7.

Pr.La7ouss wants to get Aoun a way to presidency somehow and thats apparently the only way left.
Make another government of 6 and then 8th of march doesnt attend the session for electing the president, and Lahoud’s government votes for Aoun president ..

I hope Batrak just ignored him .. i am sure he did actually.

I just dont know where we are gonna get rid of this filth !!

Syrian Elections….democracy at its best…

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

The first thing you note is that there is no privacy. People watch you  write your vote in.

Writing the vote in is another Syrian novelty.

There are two circles, one bright green (yes) and one faint green (no). The color is a hint, you’re not supposed to notice the faint circle. From the footage shown, there doesn’t seem to be a uniform way to write in the vote.

I saw people color the big circle. I saw Faruk Shara do that. They also write Naam in the Yes circle. From what I could tell, some people were also signing the circle.

Last but not least, if the voter doesn’t know how to operate a pen, the voter can provide a thumb print in the Yes circle. With the thumb print the voter has positive proof of voting for Bashar, should their loyalty to the regime be questioned by the state.

If you want to see police state in action, watch how Syrians vote. My heart breaks and my eyes weep.

The Lebanese Jackass pulling the Iranian Carriage

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

My friends I return to tell you a tale
Of the plan of two traitors that’s destined to fail

Nassrallah & Aoun , with their own evil marriage
One is a Jackass and the other; the carriage

They’re pulling a cart that’s loaded with treason
And hoping their goods are still in high season

Aoun, the geriatric, who needs to be president
And Hassouna, our very own Iranian resident

They joined up with the best of Bashars “top ten” list
Franjieh, Karami and the Syrian Nationalist

They scream of corruption and things of the sort
But the only thing they want is to cancel the court

Oh that terribly unfair and political chapter seven
It might just implicate, our militia from Heaven

Hizballah, Kizballah with their divine interventions
And Favorite of Khomeini’s; greatest inventions

Please keep your arms, those rockets so saintly
It hard to hear you Hassan , you’re talking so faintly

Oh that’s because you hid underground, god only knows where
While the rest of your militia is camped in martyrs square

Well thanks for defending us from the evil Israeli
Were so glad you left us with Lahhoud and his Zbeli

But my favorite to date is the flip flop of our despotic:
Aoun the general; orange and psychotic

It’s almost like comedy, of a sad and pathetic sort
If I could turn back time, he’s a baby I’d abort

It’s mainly his propaganda and lies he produces
With Photoshop and other irrational excuses

He leads his orange sheep with fear of the Wahhabi
Meanwhile his Iranian bank account sure isn’t shabby

In any event this opposition is all but a sham
And imported directly right from “El Sham”

Wi’am Wahhab and Ali Ammar
It’s sad to see they’ve gotten this far

Where have you gone Bachir and Kamal?
Hariri , Gibran and Rene like them all

If we don’t take good care, we’re destined lose
And suffer the loss to this Syrian ruse

I know we are all proud to be Lebanese
Not Iranian Dogs with Syrian Fleas

Ramzi ya Ramzi ..

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

Another year passes by and another mass commemorating Ramzi Irani’s martyrdom.

Every year, we keep repeating how Ramzi was killed, how brutal and unhuman was his murder .. how a brave educated young man was kidnapped during the day, put in the trunk of a car, killed in a barbaric way and left inside the truck of his car for days ..

Yes this happened in Lebanon, the same country that gave us Charles Malek, Fouad Frem el Boustany, Gibran Khalil Gebran and many many others ..

Yet no investigations were done, no tribunals set .. just a mass for the memory of Ramzi, for his family, for his wife and two wonderful children, for his mother who lost a part of her when she heard the news..

Forgive us Ramzi for not doing enough to find our your killers … I cannot do it myself and those who should be doing it are busy doing politics instead ..

I assure you you shall never be forgotten and your image will stay as the role model for every Young committed LFer to follow ..

May you rest in peace ya Ramzi, and may God protect your family, your wife Jessy, your children Jad and Yasmina whom i am sure will grow to be new Ramzis ..

Nasrallah’s Agenda

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

Why would Nasrallah consider the Nahr el Bared a red line ?? Whats on his mind and what is worrying him that much ??

We all very impressed by the intro he gave during his speech on how clean and civilized and human the resistance is, on how much they care about their suicide bombers, and pick them carefully for every operation ( how human indeed) ..

Anyway, whomever is behind him is gonna fall in love with this intro, others will just feel sick cause of the amount of hypocrisy and lies .. what matters is what came next in the speech ..

Why is the camp a red line ? and why would Hezbollah be that worried about storming The Nahr el Bared camp ?

Two major reasons:
1- He fears HA will be the first victim of those terrorist groups if things go out of hand, specially that the other Palestinian camp that has such radical groups if in Bourj el Brajneh.

2- Strenghening the army is not in his interest and giving them a political support to disarm Palestinian camps and US and international military support will weaken HA’s stances and might threaten their weapons.

HA is again doing a fatal error here, he is defending the cause of terrorists and criminals, just like he is still providing a cover for the Syrians, he is now for Fat7 El Islam … not knowing that Syrians & Those Islamic radical groups will target him first once possible.

And how does he justify himself ?? by attacking the government and calling for national unity … hypocrisy at its best ..

Zaki El Abssi attacks Dr.Geagea

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

Jeish or Djej ??

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

When i saw the army for once doing its job correctly, i felt for once proud of this army, bass ma3 ghassa ..

I never expected anything from an army that has a sissy leader such as Sleiman, that has done nothing throught the past 20 years maybe, except arresting and beating its own people.

I understand that before actions required a political decision, well now they got a green light to do whatever they want .. This is the FIRST time since 1969 the army is given a green light, and Elias El Murr sounded so firm and decided and knowing he has a personal issue against Palestinians, i thought he will act.

Its been days now and nothing, all i see are checkpoints in Antelias and Jounieh and Dora and Christian regions, and commandos in their best uniforms going North, holding those M4 and M16 commandos as little toys and going to stand there and do nothing.

Nasrallah is against an operation on the camp, Abou el Ainain is threatening ..

What will the army do?

I say it will chicken out as usual.

I was asked to put a flower for the army martyrs who fell, and in support of the LA.
I didnt and i wont, may they rest in peace, but thats not how a national army reacts when its people are threatened by terrorists.
Those were victims and will be considered killed in vain if the army doesnt storm the camp.
